These are the only spiders i can convince my wife to let stay in the house. I've literally witnessed them snatch and kill huge house spiders.

I never knew they had hairy legs. I should have guessed as much, but I've never seen one in such detail. Stunning capture.

Cellar spider NOT daddy long leg, dad long legs don't spin webs, possess venom, or regrow legs because they not spiders at all are and besides their legs they actually closer to mites than spiders
@jacobesterson2 жыл бұрын
The meaning of "daddy long legs" is entirely dependant on where you live. It can refer to harventmen, which is what you're describing. The term is also used to refer to both cellar spiders and crane flies.

I'm no expert, but that is NOT a Daddy Long Legs spider. Although its legs are very long, the Daddy Long legs spider has a small round body---not elongated like that. I think cellar spiders should be called swinging spiders. Has anyone seen one swinging very quickly on its web to lure fruit flies and gnats? SO CUTE! They start gyrating and get a standing wave going. They become a blur. Then they stop it on a dime when they've caught a bug. Amazing critters! I hate killing them.

Thanks for watching. In the UK and elsewhere Pholcus phalangioides is also known as the daddy long legs spider. This is acknowledged on many scientific websites, including that of the British Natural History Museum. We call the crane fly "daddy long legs", but the harvestman, which is an arachnid but not a spider, is also called this. I think it's the harvestman, which has a small round body, you're thinking of. I've put up a new cellar spider video today at kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX_Sh2ynm9ikd9U

@@stevedownerfilms You are of course absolutely right. I also just learned that neither of these long-legged spiders has a venom dangerous to humans-- and it's not just about fang length. Pholcid actually CAN bite us but their venom is nontoxic to humans, whereas the harvestman actually has no venom to speak of. This was all news to me--assuming wikipedia is right. I guess they are actually capable of killing venomous spiders, so that's what led to people thinking there was something to fear about them---but wolf spiders can also kill black widows so... BTW I got bit IN MY MOUTH by a wolfy when I was sleeping. No biggie---a typical little spider bite on my inside cheek. I knew right away what it was. Felt just like a spider bite. The thing was waiting to be served seconds a few days later when I turned the light on. It was smack-dab on the middle of my pillow. Freaking gross! Wouldn't you love a video like that?!? Spiders crawling in and out of my mouth at night!!! What a horror show!! p.s. I first learned about crane flies in the novel, "A Thousand Acres" by Jane Smiley but I didn't know they were also called "daddy long legs". I had been seeing them around and wondering what the heck they were for some time before I read that book.

Thats not a daddy long legs spider / harvestmen. Thats a cellar spider. Two completely different from each other. daddy long legs is not even a spider.
@popscratchie39852 жыл бұрын
I think it's what most people mean when they refer to a daddy long legs,due to its long legs. Most people aren't arachnologists
@WhereTheyLay2 жыл бұрын
Harvestmen/crane flies and cellar spiders are all referred to as 'Daddy Long Legs', apparently
@jacobesterson2 жыл бұрын
@@popscratchie3985 Daddy long legs is a slang term, not a taxological term. The slang can refer to several different species depending on where you live. Arachnologists would be left just as confused, this is a linguistical problem.
