I'll be honest...Watching this is bitter sweet for me. Looking at Gene, you can see he is CLEARLY not quite himself and looks rather fragile. And to know he passed away some months after this was filmed, just breaks my heart. - He was such an amazing talent! Rest in sweet heavenly peace, Gene Anthony Ray...

I feel exactly the same way... his speech is a little slurry and his walk weak. He did say, if you want fame, you have to pay the price ...in sweat... and more apparently. May all be placed and at peace, strong and healthy. I loved him so much that when I came to New York a few months later I was looking for ways to meet that person that motivated so many of us to dance... he was gone 5 months before..

My Tony Ray. We grew up on the same block. He used to drive me insane but he never let anyone mess with me. He one kicked a dude’s butt after the dude spike a volley ball in my face causing my noise to bleed. That was it for him. Tony wasn’t having any of it. His home going service was beautiful. His mother who is also named Jean, has transitioned too! Test, my dancing brother, rest☦️ Sincerely, Song🕊🎶

Tony, as we called him , in our neighborhood, in Harlem, was a pain in my ass BUUUUT, I loved him and all of his antics! We grew up on 153rd Street between Frederick Douglass Blvd. and MaCombs Place. He lived in building 267 and I, building 262. Tony once punched a dude in the face because he spiked the ball in my face, causing my nose to bleed. We were playing volleyball in our play street PAL sponsored and My grandmother, EG-6, was the block association’s president! I knew Tony from around the age 6 yrs! We grew together and I saw him dance, as I used to dance with him! I love him, dearly, still! Truly a work of art and talent beyond telling. I sat in his home going services and wept!still missing you, Tony. Sincerely, Crys, The Songbird🎶

Thank you for sharing these memories and details. Fame has always been my favorite TV series by far, I was just getting out of childhood back then. As a foreigner living on another continent, it was all the more exciting because of being set in NYC, of course! 🍏❤ After all these years, Tony still stands out as one of a handful of unforgettable characters in the show. Despite being a complete stranger, he still managed to give out through the screen what you just described, the good as much as the not-so-cute vibes. I had no idea his character was so close to his true self. It makes him all the more endearing. May he rest in peace.

Gene is so very charismatic and very well articulated, he had a gift and even thought it didn't end well for him, against all odds he made a name for himself, he left a mark, his legacy still lives on, fame was the best thing that happened to him. Also I love Debbie Allen, what a talent, she was a force to be reckoned with, when she danced it was like electricity.

So sad, you need real people when young people who had nothing get blessed, the wolves are there to ruin you while they spend your money. So sad, when you live like a pig you shortly fall.
