So, mounting at the 12 o’clock has always been something I prefer for the reasons you explained. I subscribe to the philosophy of as lightweight as possible and simple as possible. That means not having wires zip tied around the rail. Not having things to get snagged. I can operate the light from either hand on either side. If my optic has line of sight so does my light. That being said the challenge is finding a light that you can mount that doesn’t block your lower 1/3rd FOV.

So I think you have made a very good argument for this. And I would add that this setup would depend on what is included in your kit. And why that is important is if you have Night vision at your disposal. If your enemy has night vision etc. If all I had is this? No night vision. No thermals etc. Then this placement is very good and makes sense. Thanks for explaining why you have positioned something.
@225degrees3 жыл бұрын
Optimal sight radius is approximately 14.5". Kyle Defoor did a lot of research and testing to come to that value. Unsurprisingly that distance is the same as that found on a 14.5" carbine with a fixed carry handle. Which is also the same as a 10.5/11.5" carbine gas rifle with a fixed FSB and a rear sight. 12 o clock is optimal, I would argue 6 o clock is a close second.

I can see mounting at 11 or 1 o'clock positions depending on if you're left or right handed. However top rail space is to precious to mount a light at 12 o'clock just to account for rare occurrences where you need to shoot through a small crack. I can't think of any common instances of needing to setup like that...unless you live by a barrel factory lol. 99% of the time you're going to either be on a vertical barrier like the edge of a building or a horizontal barrier like a car hood or a window sill. Why would I setup for the 1% where I might shoot through a door crack. That setup would be even less common in non urban foliage areas. I just don't agree with this one.. everyone runs their light in a similar spot for a reason. Its the most effective location accounting for real-estate of other items.

Wouldn’t you just work with your cover or concealment at that point? Two steps to your left or right you can get a better sight picture than a crack. I’ve never seen a real world situation with what you have put done is a real thing. It’s not like we are fighting through kill holes in hard stand buildings

Also disagree. Light at the 12, especially on your suppressed AR is going to block every below your can.

The smartest place for a light is in a drawer not on a rifle. Don’t need it! Too heavy and bulky. Just train yourself to use your eyes.
