Mine arrived last week with the 200 burr set. The build is stunning, workflow simple and my coffee game has had a flavour boost. Dialling in for espresso took 3 shots! Cleaning takes minutes. Tested the Philos vs C40 for filter and the result is retirement for C40. Tested the Philos vs Atom for espresso and the result is retirement for Atom. Another guy in my city ordered the Philos with 189 burrs, then we tested them side by side for dark roasts, medium and lights. The result is retirement for 189 burrs Philos. 😂 and it looks absolutely great beside my Bezzera Strega.

Got mine 2 weeks ago and chose the 1200 burrs. I usually buy a 1kg bag of Brazilian coffee for my wife and i to drink as our daily driver. We buy it from a local roaster and the flavour notes on the bag are typical of most Brazilian espresso-focussed roasts (chocolate / nuts etc) I have been drinking this particular coffee on and off for the last 2 years - so i know what i can get from it..... But within the first 4 shots of using my new Mazzer Philos, I was getting flavours from it that i have never achieved before. Its like it woke the coffee up and brought the flavours into 3d. So i also bought a smaller 250g bag of washed Ethiopian to try with my aeropress and well lets just say that im in love with my aeropress again. I expected my coffee to level up with this grinder - but not to the extent that it has. I Love the way i dont need to break up clumps with any needle devices - so its one less step in prep. I love the look of it and how solid it is. I actually really like the way the grind adjustment is on the back - and despite what anyone says - you can adjust it EASILY with the grinder off - but even easier if you turn the grinder on and then adjust it. Its a well designed - well engineered and well built grinder that is absolutely solid. Wish I had it sooner! :D

The wait time on a Zerno is absolutely insane. I understand the whole small shop, hand made thing, but 6-12 months for a coffee grinder that is roughly on par or slightly better than the competition is pretty insane. Being hand made introduces some degree of variability too, and the forums are filled with people having issues. Maybe I’m just jaded with having to wait that long, but at this point I may as well just order the Mazzer and get incredible results now versus waiting a year for marginal improvements (maybe).
@rohanlg79023 күн бұрын
Honestly, it just depends on your patience. I’ve waited maybe nine months for mine, it arrives in February. It’s got a beautiful simplistic design, the Philos is nice although it’s massive for the burr size, and my grinder will be tucked between a wall and my coffee machine, so Grinder adjustment at the back is an absolute no no. Honestly all comes down to personal preference. I think when it comes to the actual cup performance, they are pretty much the same, it’s whatever burr you decide to put inside.

Awesome review Justin! Been owning the Philos since its initial release, and can totally relate to your description of what it has going for it and the few critiques some could have. All in all, and besides it being quite heavy footprint on the countertop, it does great (I have 3 great manual grinders and 4 great electric grinders… which have all been shadowed by the no brainer approach of the Mazzer). One thing I would add: on espresso, I pushed extractions above 22% and 23%, and it can take it without adding (relatively speaking compared to other grinders) too much astringency.

When changing the burrs, did you mind the wiggle room on the moving burr? I find it hard to understand whether it is important to install it perfectly center… also: is torque important on the screws or do you just tighten them by hand?
@DaddyGotCoffee3 ай бұрын
Concentricity (side to side movement) is a lot less critical that parallelism for flat burrs. So for me it’s ok with a visual check. I did make sure it was as on-Center as possible visually every time I made a swap but this play isn’t a dealbreaker for me based on my observation and conversation with others. Torque is important in theory but no mfg gives torque specs that I’m aware of. I have considered getting a torque driver but currently do it by hand. Just make sure you are relatively consistent. I do hand tight plus 1/4 turn

How much extra QC and tweaking do reviewer units get vs what we'd get from the normal supply chain?
@DaddyGotCoffee3 ай бұрын
I like to think I have a pretty good pulse on this, and overall I think it’s less than you would expect. Companies seem to (in my experience) err on the side of getting units to reviewers more quickly as opposed to making them perfectly polished. In this case, the first preproduction model had a significant hum because it had not been thoroughly tested on North American power (now resolved in the production model). On the timemore 078s I got a very early unit that was terribly aligned. It was unfortunate because I don’t think that reflected the majority of delivered units, but it was so rough I really had to be blunt in my reporting. Ironically some of the best performing units I have tested have been grabbed from stock shelves in a hurry during conferences or pulled from a local retailers general inventory 🤷♂️
@strubian3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I had to return two Philos grinders that presented a consistent problem. It was unable to grind on a finer setting (15-10 in the dial which is within the stated espresso range by Mazzer.) Beans seem to get stuck at the pre breaker and clearly major issues need to be resolved. Have you tried grinding medium to dark roast beans on a fine setting?
@DaddyGotCoffee3 ай бұрын
I have and did not present this symptom. Very intrigued here. I do a very wide range of testing when making these. What size of dose were you using when this happened? I also seasoned 3kg medium roast per burrset in nearly continuous runs at espresso range and did not have any issues with sticking beans. Worth noting that the North American units run at a *slightly* higher RPM because of the power frequency
@strubian3 ай бұрын
Thanks for getting back to me. 😊Each time I dosed 21g of beans with the motor running however the ‘sticking’ only occurred when grinding finer than around 15 on the dial; perfect at 22. Perhaps the rpm is a factor so hopefully Mazzer addresses/acknowledges the issue on units running at a lower rpm outside North America.

Justin. Terrific content. Excellent overview of the Philos with indepth details on the pros and cons. After looking at your Zerno review, it seems the edge might go to Mazzer if one does both espresso and filter due to the 200d burrs. Since the Zerno mainly uses SSP burrs (or other 64mm burrs) which tend to emphasize either brew or espresso with maybe the exception of the SSPCV2 burrs. Any thoughts?

Thank you so much! One other option would be to buy some 200ds and throw them in a Z1 (they fit). If I had to choose one to sit on my counter forever, it would be the Z1. But, because of the long wait if I was buying today I may even consider buying a philos then selling it after the Z1 wait is over. Bottom line, both are great options with different pros and cons. I do like the 200ds as an all around burr more than almost all of SSPs options - the CV2 is the one set I don’t have yet and the set (I am guessing) is the most similar to the 200ds. The T actually has a little more room to work in terms of cup clearance, steaming and layout of the group/wand etc. A big factor to consider for commercial is serviceability. Not can they be serviced but does a local mobile tech service them. Most DO service La Marzocco but not Ascaso. With commercial it’s not if you’ll have an issue but when, regardless of brand. When this happens you’ll need to weigh having to mail your machine in for service vs having a mobile tech come and fix it

Great Video! I bought the Philos with l200d off of your recommendation (and others) and it arrived today. It definitely looks better in person but the power cord doesn´t look good imo with its matt finish. I have couple of questions though, because it's my first electric grinder: At what grind setting do you brew filter coffee? It looks like it´s around a 100 in the video Is it normal that there are big grounds left in the Philos when grinding at a 100 and opening it afterwards? And is it normal that there are also some very fine grinds when grinding very coarse? I think I might have messed up when calibrating the grinder to zero because the butterfly screws where still open, that's why I´m asking :) Thank you to anyone who knows and I know that some of those questions might be stupid 😅
@DaddyGotCoffee3 ай бұрын
No issues at all and happy to help! If you're not sure about your calibration, I would just re-do it with the butterfly screws tight. This could absolutely have an impact. Generally I am between 90-110 for the way I brew, typically 15-16g light roast brews! For me there is next to nothing left in the grinder after I use it, especially with the knocker. If there is anything left in there, its sometimes in the prebreaking chamber. I'll often let it run for a few seconds longer to make sure any extraneous remains in the prebreaking chamber make their way all the way through. There are some fines in the filter brew, it's not as unimodal as something like a pietro (which even that grinder has fines in the filter brews!) Feel free to follow up or DM on IG - I am sure you will enjoy this one!

It’s just so large for a 64mm grinder. For that footprint I think I’d rather spend more and get higher end and larger burrs. But in actuality I am on the Zerno List because while big burrs are cool, the Zerno is awesome and probably THE BEST Home grinder. The size and perfect alignment is just a notch above IMHO.

Also a price and wait time that’s a notch above 🤣 (coming from an owner!) The Philos is big, it’s also very well aligned due to the way it’s engineered, and can be manufactured at scale and lower cost as a result. It’s all tradeoffs! 😊
@rohanlg79023 күн бұрын
From everything I have seen with the Zerno Grinder, my only gripe is potentially the noise, I wish they went with a BLDC motor, and a gearbox that maybe was a little bit quieter, something more comparable to the Vaira VS6. I agree with you, for the size of the burrs, the Philos is absolutely enormous and it’s ridiculous, not to mention, most people have their coffee machines on a kitchen counter, and the grind adjustment ring at the back is a dealbreaker, I don’t want to have to pull it out every time I need to adjust.
@adrianmichaelsmith23 күн бұрын
Great review as always BUT I still do not understand why all of you when you review this Grinder Keep banging on about the dial for adjusting the grind being at the back. It can be at the back or at the right hand side depending how you place the grinder. I for one prefer the grinder to have the dial at the right hand side and everything directly in front of me. It is then far easier to have the grinder at the back of the counter out of the way.

I reviewed the 078s. Unfortunately I feel like I got an unfortunately rough outlier from the pre-production days. Alignment was very poor and it was extremely difficult to dial in. It took a ton of seasoning for the burrs to settle and struggled with fidelity. However, once I got all that sorted the burrs were nice. Not convinced my experience was universal because there were plenty of reviewers who didn’t have any alignment issues. Overall the philos is a lot more robust. Way easier to clean and lower retention also.

The black absolutely shows dust more. The silver finish is what I would say a pretty rough brushed. Not rough to the touch but in terms of how it looks. The individual brush marks are noticeable and catch the light. Having seen both I would prob say I prefer the black even though most of my preferred equipment is lighter

Really loved the breakdown, great video! I was curious if the 200-D burrs would fit in another 64mm grinder, like the Z1 or DF64?
@DaddyGotCoffee3 ай бұрын
They fit in the Z1 but if you’re set up for blind burrs obviously you would need to tweak the config (obv! :) I have not tried the df64 but don’t see why they wouldn’t!
@nittygritty74343 ай бұрын
Mazzer may not necessarily fit easily into DF64. The inner diameter and/or thin thickness might affect grind adjustment to where can’t grind fine enough or align correctly. More folk trying 64mm burrs across platforms are discovering beyond the SSP they don’t easily swap or dial in just because 64mm or even 83mm. Ironically the original DF64 from few years ago with sketchier alignment build tolerance actually allowed for more swap ability ie more grinder designed to maximize a particular burr more difficult to swap in other mfg’s burrs. Regards

Great review - it’s a really interesting option but frankly just too big. I know without even asking that my wife will object to the size. The Zerno is much more svelte and I don’t mind the wait for one.
@philindeblanc2 ай бұрын
Does the grind setting change if you slow feed the beans vs direct feed? And do you mean it does brew and espresso "unicornly" well using the 2 burr sets, or with one or the other? As you mentioned 1 is better suited for medium to light. People doing brew and espresso will want a dedicated brew grinder, because of the point you brought up. The roast type is not what users will want to swap burrs for. If we want espresso from a grinder, we want dark to light. But we dont expect that grinder to do brew. Maybe you can help clarify this soup you heated up :-)

@DaddyGotCoffee3 ай бұрын
Personally I think you’ll be happier with the 189s if you are only doing darker roasts and espresso rather than filter. Good news is they are not too much. I’d email mazzer with your pre-order number and I’d bet they could make a change if you wanted to switch. The 200s are a great all around burr for filter and med/light espresso

For me it has three drawbacks: it’s massive, doesn’t use blind burrs, and the dial on the back of the unit is not handy. I still think the Zerno is worth the few hundred more, and in this price bracket, that’s basically not a big consideration.

Thank you for your reviews, they really helped my decision-making process. I'd been looking for something that will be good out of the box, give a modern profile, and last who knows, maybe a life time. Your 078s experience was an eye-opener. I then signed up for the Z1 waitlist but that delay for nearly twice the price here in the EU? No thanks. I've now ordered one of these, happy with my choice. That dial gives me confidence in being able to switch between brew methods repeatedly. The ensuing counter top annexation might not go down so well here at home, but I'll just have to take the flak on that!

I planned to pay my order for Z1 in August. But after adding the burrs selection, the bill was over CAD$2000. For this amount of money (and a bit more), I prefer to get something more “professional”. So, I changed my mind for the Philos. I will wait for Oct when the dealer has their inventory back in Oct.
@DaddyGotCoffee3 ай бұрын
The Z1 def moves into “boutique” zone as far as grinders. They are amazing, but basically built to order and configured to spec. The philos makes some compromises but makes a great offer for less than the Z1. Upping to an SSP really jumps the pricing of the Z1

It's cool and all, but I don't understand Mazzer's marketing idea of aggressively hyping this grinder through north American influencers for the past 4 months yet it's not available for purchase and there is no st date for release in NA. Many people I know bought either the P64 or are on a waiting list for a Zerno.
@DaddyGotCoffee3 ай бұрын
I don't know for sure but I feel like there may have been some unforseen delays with the North American launch. I can absolutely vouch for the quality of the Z1, however a puchase today is still scheduled to dispatch Feb/Mar 2025 😳. I would be surprised if Philos' are not available on demand long before that in NA. Time will tell if Zerno can scale to meet demand!

It's just too big and bulky for my taste. Seeing it next to the Zerno Z1 shows just how massive that grinder is. If the burrs were significantly bigger to justify the size of the machine, that would be one thing. But as it is, this is a BIG miss -- no pun intended.

@@zach2954 Both. I have all the ssp blind burrs and non blind Omni mizen. I will get the mizen blinds when they come out. The big benefit of the zerno/philos is to change out burrs often.
@randyhou8522Ай бұрын
100% I would take the Zerno over the Philos. $350 price difference, but you can take ~$100 off that for difference in burr price because of premium coating. Better alignment, quieter, smaller, way better aesthetics (IMO), option for blind burrs, option for different augers, likely better customer support, small indie company vibes, all of this is easily justified for the extra $250 and the wait time (I have a NZ I can keep using in the mean time)

The build is so solid and hefty, ist feels great to touch and use it, thats a important point imo. Im using it mainly for espresso (light nordic roasts) and for me it hits the spot everytime, dialing in is super easy and you get the same extraction everytime. Im planning on to use it more for filter because the little bit of extra fines i get with the 200d help me with my weber bird brews! There is a little bit more "zing" to the brews than with my sculptor 078 sure its more juicy but also kinda boring 😅 Rabbit holes ... 🫶🏼 The Philos is the perfect grind for everybody in the SD world without that crazy ek43/eg-1 money!
