i work at a special needs school that offers similar skills to the one you're talking about for Sophie. it's honestly one of the most beautiful things to hear that she has access to that mentoring and support. the kids i see come in and out of the classroom are the most wonderful kids to work with. seeing them light up when they're doing what they love is the most rewarding thing ever. I'm so pleased for Sophie and the family!

I cry whenever I rewatch the vlog from Spain seeing Soph work up the courage to go down the slide, it makes my heart so happy that no matter her needs she’s showing everyone she can do anything she dreams to do no matter. It’s so clear Sarah and Joel are amazing parents to their girls, but the way they encourage Sophie and push her to achieve is such a beautiful thing to watch. I work as a SEN assistant, and there really is no better word to describe children like Sophie other than special, not letting the word special define their needs but instead the people they are within, beautiful and so precious. I wish we all could see the world in the way they do. Good luck to Sophie in your new school! And good luck to Kaci for the results, but take it from someone who knows, results day is not worth missing your family holiday, open that envelope when your home 😘xxx

special needs is a term that scares people who aren’t surrounded with people who need that extra support so they always are timid or sensitive about it, but i live and am constantly around people with “special needs” all the time and they are truly wonderful and it is a great umbrella term that my close friends and family find helpful and descriptive when talking about those people we love. much love to u guys your wonderful xxx

@itsemxoxo
@itsemxoxo Жыл бұрын
Sophie will absolutely thrive in a SEN school, the life skills they teach will be life changing for her! I’m so happy for her and wish her all the best for September! I think the term “special needs” comes down to each individual, if it’s what you feel comfortable using for Sophie then it’s fine. Additional needs & SEN are also other ways to phrase it and it is just personal to each person. I know a lot of schools still name themselves as special schools so it just depends on different things. Your child, your choice 🤍

as a note on the discussion about the term special needs being offensive or "wrong". at the end of the day, your family and Sophie are the only ones who can decide how to refer to Sophie's wonderful existence. the phrase is not inherently offensive, people have simply used it negatively through history and has the potential to be used against people. but so can any other factor of someone's existence. special needs, different needs, additional needs, Disabled, whatever you wish to refer to yourself and your loved ones as is okay if the person in discussion is okay with it. i think calling it special is beautiful because then she and people around her know that she is amazing as she is!

not entirely what you've said here. i think some people would prefer to not have their needs referred to as special but just different, because the needs are not in fact special at all. its the same needs everybody else has.. how disabled people will access them is what's different to non disabled people.. disabled people need to be able to go to school, to travel, to get a job if we want, to learn, to have a social life, ALL of us. it doesn't make the needs special, and when we set the tone that they are special needs, it minimizes our rights.. disabled people have the right to do everything non disabled people do, and yes by law it is in fact our right. its not something special people do for us.. its not a special treatment we are being given, its not a reward it is a need.
@hannahs_harp
@hannahs_harp Жыл бұрын
@@sarahbeasley-ps2zq i see your point and you're most certainly entitled to that viewpoint. i seem to be gathering from your comment you are disabled, and if I've inferred correctly, then we are both disabled and can have an opinion that differs and still be valid. i think the needs in many cases are different and some may prefer to call that "special", particularly with young children as society likes to push the idea that different is wrong (which i totally disagree with). we all need to achieve the same basic milestones in life, but the needs in this sense refer to additional support/special requirements in order to meet those goals (hence the term special needs, or additional support needs) i agree that using the wrong terminology can diminish our rights as disabled people, and i don't dispute that it is our legal right to access the same things non disabled people do (although plenty of places in this world don't agree.) I personally do not use the term special needs with myself as I find that it is mainly used in educational settings, and I am no longer in education. however with children, it is often a really great umbrella term to catch multiple disabilities and needs many of those kids face. this debate is similar to that of being someone "with autism" or someone who "is autistic". it is on an individual level in most cases. the general language of "special needs" is a flag to indicate how people these people may require additional support and may need specialist care in order to access the same things non-disabled people do. All this to say that in the end, if you feel comfortable with how people are referring to you then that's the most important bit!
@sarahbeasley-ps2zq
@sarahbeasley-ps2zq Жыл бұрын
@@hannahs_harp yes i stated the core reason of why special needs is not used by a lot of disabled people, or people in general .. which at the core, was not for the reason you stated. it often works against disabled people not for us. i understand why some people do use it as either they are not aware or they are aware but still choose to for their reasons to, ultimately we all can do what we want, but it is very known (or should be) the real reason special needs is not the most appropriate term to use. its important though that people are aware what that term does and has been doing to the disabled community, so hopefully then people can make more informed decisions, that was and only ever is my intention when having these discussions.

The term ‘special needs’ shouldn’t be offensive and I think people only really see it as offensive if they see having special needs as a bad thing. I get how calling someone ‘special’ can be a bad thing because usually it’s used in quite a derogatory way but as an autistic person my needs are special so there’s nothing wrong with saying that similar to how people say you shouldn’t call someone ‘disabled’ but I feel like most of the time it’s due to some negative connotations people have with the word that is unnecessary

It kind of makes me sad seeing Joel & Sarah’s opinions on results day. I know they’re very laid back parents, and standard eduction/grades don’t really matter to them, but it almost looks like they don’t care. A-levels are a huge deal, and they’re really difficult. Kaci was working really hard in hopes of doing well. Results day is when you can finally see if the work paid off, and celebrate your success. Getting to celebrate with your friends, and thank your teachers is important. It brings the closure you need after 2 years of work.

Have you guys considered maybe testing Chloe for ADHD? I've been watching your videos for a while now, and the not being able to sleep, having higher senses and more energy and then how she acts at school. it sounds like she could be masking? I was a lot like her as a child and then I was just diagnosed last year at 19 and I know how much being diagnosed earlier could have helped me! Also I remember Joel mentioning he has ADD and there's a 50% chance of passing it on to your children. Obviously all I can see from your lives are through videos here and there, so I could definitely be wrong, I just feel strongly about kids getting diagnosed as early as possible because I know the difference it can make (especially girls as it's so often missed) And I loved the video

The way you describe Chloe, is a very common for girls with ADD/ADHD. Its hard to diagnos girls, just because it hard to see the signs. I was the same as Chloe , when i was a school-girl ( Iam now an adult and got my diagnos Add/ Atypical Autism as a 38 year old). Even if you dont see it, she can be struggle to feel like she is fitting in, in the school. You should look it up. Much love
