Top man. I approached Mr Allen once, at Bristol bus station. He was kind enough to humour me for a minute, and then I said goodbye and turned to leave, and fell over a suitcase someone put down just behind me.

How I love this man! Absolute ambassador of all things Australian. A well missed mirth maker. I listen to this recording because I'm completely devoid of any sense of wonder. Secondarily it is like a poem or prayer. Glissando guitar described wonderfully. Funny how he liked the Deads operation but not all of their music...they were jazzy space rock sometimes let alone country rock lol

I saw Gong with Daevid. Met him for a moment. Charming one minute and then an ass as he waved his member to the assembled crowd at an in store solo thing. Love both bands and seen them both (Hawkwind too.) I have heard this quote from him before and it always struck me as such a giant shame. Daevid obviously never heard #1 Anthem of the Sun or Aoxoamoxoa, #2 any live Primal Dead circa '68 or #2 any 72-73 Miles, Coltrane/Weather Report influenced out thereness that the Dead were doing at their peak ala the Playing improvs etc. Unfortunate. Very, very unfortunate as Daevid shared many of the same influences, (read that again). Coltrane, Miles, The Dead were a mix of many influences and could launch into incredible jazz/avant space weirdness. Anyone doubting needs to do some investigating. I had a friend just like this. Had the same opinon, until he came over once and after a few herbal refreshments , I put on the '74 Cow Palace Playing and after 10 minutes he sat there with has jaw hanging saying " this is frickin' Coltrane". Yeah, Coltrane, Stravinsky, Stockhausen there all there. Just so happens so is Mississpi John Hurt, Howlin Wolf, Hank Williams and on and on. And that's what made them so unique. They unfortunately hung around way past their expiration date ( I saw then several times in the 80's and was convinced of it). But for 10 years they were a force. Go pick up Dicks Picks 22 Kings Beach '68. Not much "country rock" there. But it will plaster your lysergic face to the floor. Most shows from '72-73. Gotta poke around. Interspersed with some of dreaded "country rock" is the most original space improv you'll find. Dark Star, Playing in the Band, Eyes of the World, these are improv vehicles.

Very sadly for me, Daevid never happened to be on hand when I saw Gong, but I'm not complaining, as the the vast, overwhelming majority of humans on the planet have never seen any Gong play...or Hawkwind, or Zappa, or Gentle Giant, or any of the hundreds of magical shows that I was lucky enough to see and hear.

I followed his career starting in 74'. I always wanted to meet him and have a conversation. The only problem I have with that is the fact that I have no respect for Led Zeppelin and the subject of Zeppelin always comes up...regardless if it's brought to the table by a Rock Star or an obscure artist like Daevid Allen. They are like Jesus Christ right? The king of kings...the son of God...the stairway to heaven. The world feels that it is important to give Led Zeppelin this abundance of credit. They are awful.

Mediocre in the extreme as someone once said. To be fair they made their name playing background music to rave up parties where everything revolved around psychedelic social interaction

@@alistairhouston4655 They were psychedelic in the late 60s with anthem of the sun being their best in my mind where they got away with their freedom to explore the limitless possibilities with music. But then 1970 came around, and they watered down their sound in playing country, folk and Americana which was still awesome in my mind but I can see where your distaste for the dead come from. I'm a deadhead and also a "gonghead" but to be honest, as much as I love the Dead, I feel more attracted to listening Gong more often especially since I'm stoned and/or tripping on LSD. I wish Gong opened for The Dead because I can really tell that deadheads would absolutely love them. I know because when I played Gong at a Dead and Company show to a bunch of deadheads, they LOVED IT!

I love Daevid Allen's music, but I think he does the Dead a disservice to dismiss their music as "country rock." There is that element of the Dead's music, and that's not necessarily bad, for what it is, but they did so much more. There are times when the sonic territory explored by the Grateful Dead and that explored by Gong definitely cross paths. I admit that when I first heard Jerry and the gang I was less than impressed. It can be an acquired taste, as can Gong.

The Dead were a music band. No bounderies. Daevid wasn't as open. (prejudice, ignorance)?

Dude! Please Workingmans Dead, American Beauty & Wake Of The Flood which ,of course you`ve never bothered with and are therefore totally unqualified to make broad brushstroke judgements on a seminal band such as GD....
@lenini0564 жыл бұрын
Ironically if Gong decided to open for The Dead in either 73 or 74 in the states, the deadheads would have absolutely love them to the point of the causing the band's breakthrough popularity in the US. I know because I'm a deadhead (along being a "gonghead") and when I showed this music at a Dead and Company show, my fellow deadheads absolutely ate up Gong's music a lot. Such a missed opportunity with Daevid.
@lukeriely4468 Жыл бұрын
He was just generalising the concept that the Dead were originally based. Also, Gong were refered to as the Greatful Dead for the French in 1967/68 and their shows were organised rather differently to the GD, so he was citing that fact. I assume he wanted people to also understand that he was not making comparisons between Gong and GD. Deavid worked with many American bands such as Frank Zappa.
