I'm sure Ian has mentioned it before, but it's worth remembering that the Matiz started life as Ital Design's proposal for the Fiat Cinquecento, dubbed Lucciola. The Lucciola and Matiz are quite different in many ways, but the evolution from one to the other is clear to see. The Lucciola looks like the Matiz's cooler, older sibling

Some of the most enjoyable drives I had were on the A 5104 from near Chester to Bala, and from Bala to Trawsfynnydd on the A4212 in a Peugeot 204 with 55 BHP out of 1130cc on my way from Leeds to Pwllheli before the A55 was doubled at the western end. You didn't need any more than 55 BHP. It was the excellent steering and handling as much as anything that made it fun.

That has thoroughly satisfied my 3 pot thrashing itch I'd developed, indeed proof that a smaller vehicle is infact far more usable in power terms than a big brake horse motor, in alot of places. We're only going to see more anpr average speed being rolled out, the sheer thrashy fun factor of these is the key around it.

Myrtle sounded absolutely fantastic! I think I remember you driving a Suzuki Capuccino last year, as Matt from furiousdriving just drove one on his channel as a very low mileage example is up for sale! I distinctly remember you driving a Japanese kei car either in New Zealand or Australia 🇦🇺, and I do remember the Suzuki Capuccino. Today's 3 cylinder is like the Capuccino, a turbo making quite a bit of horsepower, but on winding roads, it's all about suspension and tyre grip, and Myrtle handled quite well (at least from the vantage point I was watching). And the countryside is simply stunning! A village plopped right in the middle of farmland, nothing for miles! Breathtaking! Thank you very much Sir Ian! Bravo 👏 👏 👏 👏 !

On a visit with friends to the UK in 1996, we spotted a lightly camouflaged prototype mule driving on public roads. We were convinced that we had just see the “new Mini”. (We were massive classic Mini enthusiasts on holiday from the US, and the Frank Stephanson- designed MINI had not yet been shown, but everyone knew a new Mini was coming). We followed the car to the gates of Ricardo Engineering. The test drivers were pretty mad at us for trying to take photos of the car. And they would not confirm or deny that it was a prototype “new Mini”. A couple of years later, the distinctive shape of the prototype we had spotted was unveiled as the new Matiz!

I remember hiring a Matiz on holiday in Corfu, cheapest car available. The gearbox was very imprecise, or it may have been cos it was LHD and I'm just not good at finding gears when the stick is on the wrong side. Anyway it was fine on the very narrow curvy roads of Corfu, which I later found out are one of the most dangerous in Europe. Trust me, you are glad to be in a small narrow car when you see a coach or a truck rumbling towards you on roads just wide enough... for one coach or truck!

What a wonderful run that was. You're not wrong, that 3 cylinder engine sounds absolutely lovely. Thank you for sharing it with us. Such a beautiful place to drive, it beats the congestion of cities. I really want to explore Wales in my van once conditions allow. Your videos whet my appetite. Rant starts: Driving around in Cornwall, I despair at people that drive at 40mph in a national speed limit on a good day, then continue at 40mph through a 30mph limit. Such people are usually the ones that also compulsively put their brakes on if seeing oncoming vehicles or bends, with little regard for whether then actually need to do so. Thus they waste their tyres, brakes, and fuel. They often seem incapable of operating their indicators too. So many times I've had to guess whether such drivers' brake lights are indicative of an intention to slow down to turn off, or just another random and vague act of braking that will barely slow them at all, simply because they don't indicate with appropriate warning. Rant Ends! Thank you Ian :)

I love small cars. Of all yours, I think this one is my favourite. The last time I was in the UK, I saw a Matiz with a Chevrolet emblem. Here in Canada, they called it a Spark. It started with a four cylinder 1200 (I think) engine and now it's up to 1400. I worked at a GM dealership, but never drove one. The most interesting one to me, though, was only introduced for a short time in Oregon and California. It was pure electric, and the early ones had something like 400 foot pounds of torque. One test I saw showed the driver getting wheel spin at 40 mph!

Brilliant, loved my Matiz, a fun car to drive, and love North Wales, well, all of Wales actually, we are two miles from the border and it is our view across the Dee, not sure if we're allowed in at present but can't wait to get over the estuary and get back into the amazing country.

Having lived in mid-North Wales I know that area well and yes there are many fantastic roads around there! I also share the joy of driving under-powered cars to their max (given I have a 2004 Ford Fiesta 1.4) 😁

Put a big exhaust and an improved intake, imagine what it will sound like then? Great fun. My 1.05 Breadvan Polo used love country roads.

This was a very entertaining watch, made all the better by your obvious affinity to your beloved Matiz. I’m not surprised you’ve had 1500 likes, but I am shocked that (as I type) 39 people have seen fit to give a thumbs down. Who are they? Do they not appreciate enthusiasm and fun at an affordable level?

Average speed cameras on a road like that is absolutely criminal 😭 Also, I've just purchased a 2017 Hyundai i10 with the mighty 1.0 Three Cylinder, it's a real laugh to drive 👍

As Top Gear one said, little cars are fun as you can take them to the limit on normal roads without needing to break the speed limit. We get such idiots (mainly motorbikes) on the cost road in Dorset between Abbotsbury and Bridport, as such they changed it to being 50mph even on sections that should be national speed limit, admittedly going up Abbotsbury hill the speed limit is not really a problem! Naturally we also get "Sunday drivers". (18% max if the internet is correct, gets steeper as you go up so you get up some speed, change gear and immediately realise your mistake!) Even worse on the beach road to Portland we get people looking at the scenery and not where they are going so go about 30mph on a 60, not good.

Best thing about small city cars are their turning circles, especially around roundabouts - larger cars have to slow down.

As a local, social media ruined that place ! Had many fun trips around it in my 106 Rallye. Ps, where you stopped and got out roughly at 12 mins in, if you went along that track on right, you would of come across a hidden gem. The Alwen dam.

It looks like the area where The Real Car Co shoot their beautiful videos of vintage Bentleys and Royces. Back in the noughties, i was going for a weekend in Snowdonia, and I went to my local Enterprise to rent the cheapest car they had. They gave me a new-on-the-market Toyota Aygo. Wheeeee! What fun from the little screamer! A real illustration of what a revived Mini could have been, had the marketing boys not pitched it towards vanity and fashion instead.
Vlog: Matiz after the Evo Triangle. It hurts.
