Reading Kiddushin 08 and learning about the debate over getting betrothed while being pursued by a dog was one of my favorite things that happened this week.

Eowyn is an Eishet Chayil (emphasis on Chayil) and doesn't need a man to save her from mean dogs. Off topic - but I want my daughters to learn to bend a bow of bronze or at least something with springs that spits out brass to the side and hot lead out the front. This somewhat equalizes the DV bit. Judith and Yael would know how to do such things.

I have so many thoughts about this video... 1. Giving a woman a ton of money as a proposal should make a comeback. 2. Men not taking women at their word for not being interested. 😩 3. I was not expecting to hear "Orodruin" said aloud in this video, but I am very pleasantly surprised. Or at least, I will be until the Nazgul show up, then it'll be less surprising and far more unpleasant.

So many unresolved questions at this point, but my question to a certain sage on Kiddushin 7 was "are you really ok...because you actually said that you think a woman 'prefers any type of husband' and really???". Clearly, no woman was consulted before this thought went through that particular sage's brain, then written down for all to see. I took a screenshot of that one, highlighted it, and wrote NOPE in big letters over that take. Apparently domestic violence wasn't something of a dilemma back in the day. Of all the hypotheticals they have come up with "any type of husband" wasn't pondered... Here for LOTR takes! Can never have enough!!!

There are plenty of times where the Rabbis will say a divorce is mandatory (which includes DV), so clearly it's not "any husband no matter how bad", but the statement refers to their contemporary social situation -- a woman on her own is in pretty bad shape in their society, so your average woman then probably would prefer to be married to some shlub she wasn't all that into over being out on the street and risking uncertainty and insecurity in their future living situation.

So wait! If one of the ways to become betrothed was to receive the eggplant emoji from the potential suitor, does that mean that pre-marital... eggplant reception? was okay? Or is that more of a "well, I guess they might as well marry since they've already exchanged an egglant emoji"?

My Beloved and I have been talking about getting officially engaged. We have four dogs so do we need four separate brioches? What about our cats? One is a little freak and will literally crawl over our 95 pound Argentine Mastiff to take away anything carb-y from her so does he get his own brioche too? The other cat doesn't like bread-type products so what do the sages recommend for that situation? Is tuna fish ever mentioned in Talmud? Please advise. 😄

Omg I can’t believe I missed this comment. Give each dog a brioche. Have extra brioches on hand to distract the cat. If the cats do not like bread, Rav Pappa suggests small fried fish, as they were his favorite!

I saw you are leaving Twitter because it is a "hellscape". Why is Twitter a hellscape? Just because Elon Musk is a schmuck? BTW I love your version of the One Ring poem. What is "matrimony" in the language of Mordor? Or maybe in Mordor they use the same word for "matrimony" and "slavery". When we get to the bottom of Menahot 43b you will see that Rav Aha bar Yaa'kov's son makes a similar point about "shelo asani eved" being redundant if you say "shelo asani ishah". And maybe "ishah" in that b'rakha, and also in the first mishnah of Kiddushin, should be translated "wife", not "woman".
