Daf turbo twin 1988 Jan de Rooy

The Rally monster from Jan de Rooy which was used in de Paris-Dakar in 1988 was equipped with two 11.6 litre Engines, 500 HP each. The Truck had a top speed over the 200 KM/H.

I can still remember when i was a child, watching W.-Germany television. 1988 Dakar is the best ever in tv history. On Mt. Olymp scince that year, the scene when Jan de Roy is overtaking in his DAF Twin Turbo Truck the Suomi rally driver Ari Vatanen in his Peugeot 405 T16. EPIC!!!

You all (including the uploader) misunderstand something. The turbotwin X1 had two 11,6 l triple-turbo diesel engines mid-mounted. Producing about 1000-1200 horsepower EACH!!! Myb sometimes the wikipedia has to fail.

This is what I've heard...Jan de Rooy finished the rally in 1983 with big frustrations over not having enough power. Most truck builders could make use of engines up to 18 liters but DAF didn't had a bigger engine than the 11.6 liter one. As Jan stated he couldn't win unless he had more power over a beer after the rally an engineer joked, well we can give you two engines. Somehow they got on with the joke and started figuring how a such a silly idea would work and made drawings of it on an envelope which in the end result in the two-headed best in 1984 and 1985, in 1986 the first Turbotwin arrived which was disqualified. In 1987 Jan won the rally with the TurboTwin II and in 1988 DAF build two trucks, the TurboTwin X1 and X2. They had two engines producing around 600 hp, making 1200 hp in total. Sadly the Turbotwin X2 crashed resulting in the sad death of Kees van Loevezijn. After that DAF withdrew from the rally because the didn't want to risk any more lives promoting their trucks.
