Daffodils should be planted in the fall or early winter for blooms the following spring. They can be planted in full or part sun as long as the soil is well draining. Plant daffodil bulbs 6 inches deep and 5 inches apart. Cover them back up with soil and water if the planting area is dry. After blooming allow the foliage to die back naturally to replenish the bulb for next year. Daffodils are perennials is zones 3-8 and will return each year. Most varieties multiply rapidly giving you a bigger and better show the longer they are in the ground.

Daffodils announce spring. I love them for braving uncertain weather, for their vibrancy, and for their return year after year.

An interesting historical note: Roman soldiers used to carry narcissus bulbs into battle in case they were mortally wounded. They would eat the (poisonous) bulbs tomato for a fast death. Their toxicity is what keeps all kinds of would-be pests from dining on them, including rodents!

I love your personnality ❤ This morning, at the grocery store, I picked up a potted daffodil. My question is, can I transplant them outside in the spring? I'm in zone 4 or 5 (Canada and confused with my actual hardiness zone haha). I can tell you that currently, it's -19°C without the windchill factor and the wind is very strong. Thanks!!!!

Because of their reliability and deer resistance I’ve become daffodil obsessed! I’m adding more all planting season long and try to plan the planting before a rain. I’ve read that they aren’t very attractive to early spring pollinators, but wondered if you’ve found (or are aware of) any types that might be best for this. Also, the poeticus types, and especially Actaea, are my current favorites. But there are so many lovely ones out there and I’m so happy to see them in spring, that “favorite” will probably end up meaning whichever is currently blooming 🙃

I love this!!! Can you supplement or interweave your daffodil display with spring ephemerals that are native to your area? :) In our area, a mix of Carolinian deciduous woodland and tall grass prairie, there are lots of truly gorgeous native spring ephemerals that look beautiful with daffodils, including Virginia bluebells, woodland phlox, tiarella, shooting stars, spring beauties, starry Solomon's seal, and violets. :) I've also seen daffodils used as a stunning under planting to a pussy willow, pruned to keep it compact. Pussy willow blooms are such good early pollinator food!
