And more than a refresher, this is an update on where the rules stand in the release version of the game. For instance, the bit about the armor slots is new. If my players are in a combat and I want extra enemies, im going to add them, not because a dice told me I was allowed, because im not trying to win.

This usually plays out better in longer campaigns, while the simplicity of DH shines in simplere settings and especially with newer player, who might be less confident with keeping track of many complicated rules at the same time. With all that said, in the end most of that still comes down to simple preference and your prefered style of game- and roleplay

The Thief walks up to the door to the treasure room. It is locked, and has a magical ward on it to alert the guard, should it be unlocked. Fortunately for this Thief, he has special thieves tools that he could use bypass this alarm. Will the Thief be able to open the lock without triggering the alarm? Success with Hope: Yes! The lock opens perfectly with a click, and the door opens. No alarm is set off, and no one knows he is here. Failure with Fear: No! He accidentally trips the alarm, and furthermore, his tools are stuck! He could abandon his precious tools and escape unseen, or he could risk being spotted while he attempts to free the pick. Success with Fear: Yes! The lock opens and the door opens, but a wrong movement led to a loud thud. The Thief could carry out the mission, hoping that no one heard, or close the door and leave, to try again later. (Or whatever else you decide) Failure with Hope: No, the alarm has been set off, but you see how the alarm works. Should you try this again later, you will have an easier time not setting it off.

My homebrew game uses 2d12's but for more straight rolls. Got to be honest, adding mixtures of these together became a real math chose for my players, so we reduced it to 2d10s as it became surprisingly easier to add those together with a modifier. Evasion always makes more sense than "armour class" in my opinion, with then armour actually being a helpful in reducing said damage, or light armour actually helping with speed or evasion in combat.

@baitposter21 сағат бұрын
The Hope/Fear dominant rolls sound just like narrative successes/failures in a couple other RPGs' DM advice sections, but baked into the game as a hard and fast coin flip _(not counting doubles increasing your odds of success)_ e.g. With a narrative failure on a failed roll, you could succeed at doing what you intended, but it comes with a consequence, such as, _you made noise and piqued the interest of a nearby guard._ On a success with narrative success flavoring, _unsurprisingly, you failed to run up the sheer vertical wall, but suddenly a rope's end is tossed over the ledge and let down to you. A silhouetted figure is seen peeking overhead and quickly disappears from view._ *But the **_Fear_** resource seems entirely gratuitous and unnecessary. If the GM rolls well consistently, they still need restraint and good judgment to create a good experience for the players.*

@focf198123 сағат бұрын
Matt says it is "fast paced" (compared to what?) and yet, I feel like every mechanic of the game introduced in the video introduces latency: 1. GM and players should work together to determine if a roll is needed. A conversation will always slow things down. 2. A duality roll has 5 different outcomes (crit, suc hope, suc fear, fail hope, fail fear). I also feel like rolling two dice, taking the sum, and also comparing the value of the two rolled dice to determine whether it is hope / fear is more complex than say rolling a single d20 (dnd), 2d6 (pbta), or Nd6 (fitd). 3. Movement of meta-currency for every roll. 4. Different meta-currencies to trigger different abilities for players. (hope/stress) 5. Attack damage requires a damage roll, which then requires conversion of rolled damage to actual damage, which then requires player to decide whether they want to use armor to reduce it even further. I am NOT saying these are bad things. But describing the game as "fast paced," doesn't really make sense to me.
@aarndal9022 сағат бұрын
Exactly my thoughts and also my experience during the playtest. Definitely not a fast-paced TTRPG. But interesting mechanics.
@mrbitjetson22 сағат бұрын
Yeah it sounds very interesting, especially the damage system, but checks are more complicated than 5e in every way. More dice, more math, more talking = slower pace. It also sounds like there is a lot more overhead for the DM to be prepared to offer 5 resolutions to any check.
@cringeroll20 сағат бұрын
@@aarndal90 it is in fact fast paced (i'm running two campaigns on daggerheart, and other two are completed). Simply because biggers chunks of narrative are covered by one roll. For example, killing six guards (minions) by one attack. Or travelling from one place to another. Usually in daggerheart we roll three times less rolls than in dnd or pf. And there are almost no situations where characters trade misses in a battle. Also, moving in battle is much faster and simpler, because no need to count feet/squares. No need to wait for others after you dash before you can do anything. Less statuses, less text for abilities. Almost no time spent on looting ans counting gold (less than a handful of gold is not counted, and you can't carry lots of armor sets and weapons). Therefore, it is fast. However, there are faster games, but DgH is indeed faster than dnd
@huntress66618 сағат бұрын
Was gonna say the same! The only thing that's slowed us down is calculating damage taken (how much armor and etc to reduce a hit), but seems like armor has been simplified further to keep it quicker. @@cringeroll Definitely appreciate the fluidity of mechanics that rewards decisive choice-making. You get rewarded for using resources, and there's not too many that you agonize over what ones to use. We've been more inspired to make bold choices bc some resources are only session-based anyways. They've def taken inspo from both Genesis and PbtA and some other more narratively-fluid systems.

it is a very GM heavy system sadly, the best criticism I've seen of it is it's a system of streamers for streamers it's not meant for a home game.
@JustinLaForge21 сағат бұрын
I disagree, you should already be coloring the tenure of success based on how much they failed or beat the DC with a d20 system. In my play tests of Daggerheart it’s a system that asks you to be a better GM to play at base, but the bar to do so is not high especially when you get shown how to do things correctly by the game rules. Basically I feel like yes bad GMs will feel a little more demand from the core ruleset, but it’s trying to help you play the game better. Where as other systems will just let you be a bad GM. On the flip side once you get used to it basically everything is easier to run than 5e. I can’t tell you how much better I prefer the monster stat blocks in Daggerheart.
@cringeroll20 сағат бұрын
You can narrate success without a roll, or you can narrate success with a cost on a failure, and you can narrate no twist on a roll with fear, just take a fear token for future surprise complications. It's pretty easy
@tylerreed24095 сағат бұрын
@JustinLaForge There is a world of difference between narrating levels of success differently based on the roll, and being mandated to make a mixed success or failure every couple of roles. Especially because some rolls should be banal pass/fail. This reduces flexibility and makes it harder to tailor how much you're narrating to the pace you're trying to set. Saying it makes you a better GM is a bit silly to me. A bad GM is still going to narrate those portions poorly, they are just now going to make success suck every now and then. I think when we have a problem with not having enough DMs to players making the process harder is probably not a good thing.
@tylerreed24095 сағат бұрын
@Zxmagus I felt this way when they mentioned the rules around having players help you develop towns as they go into them. This preferences a very improv background type of GM, common among streamers. It also relies on all the players having a strong sense for the tone. This does not really help the average GM, who may not have players who make choices which they can really roll with. Now they are in the uncomfortable situation of stopping to mitigate the player's contribution.

Not to sound incredulous but this system sounds awfully inspired by Modiphius' 2d20 system, especially with the players using a resource which is gained by the player rolling, "Hope" to gain an advantage and the GM using a resource "Fear" to spawns enemies or cause problems for the players

I think the 1.5 manuscript said they took inspiration from the cypher system for the fear system, they’ve been pretty open about the game having a lot of mechanics from other ttrpgs

It also feels like it's pulling some ideas from the Star Wars TTRPG with the Positive/Negative Success and Failures (which was something I really liked about that system personally).

I know season 3 fell flat compared to past seasons, and maybe that's because of the cast growing bored with 5e rules or how WOTC has been, but it's sad to think that any future season will be under this system :/

I like he is trying to turn the GM into a player but this just seems convoluted and over complicated to me. I need to see more and possibly play it a couple of times.

Where does Matt get those vests??? Is it, like, an old seamstress living in a yurt on the northern plains of Mongolia? Where?

There will now be a friendly duel between Matt and Matt, between Daggerheart and Draw Steel!, to determine who has the more awesome new RPG...

@@KhaoticPhoenix And then my brain just conjured up a hybrid of the two called “Draw Dagger”, lol
