I’m in art school and I got super lucky with my professors. A lot of professors think anime isn’t art or have some sort of stigma against it, but my painting and figure drawing professors both gave the class open projects as the final. I did anime for both. I spent the entire semester working with realism, so I wanted to apply what I had learned into my favorite style. My professors were very chill about it and even gave good feedback.

I wish I had your teachers😅 My teachers straight up said they didn't like the anime/manga art style
@whoknowswhocares8852 жыл бұрын
From what I understand about professors opinion and rejecting the idea of anime is that they hate the idea of it being to basic and being a formulaic style. The style they believe is too copy and paste and isn’t really challenging. To sum it up basically they don’t want your material to be as basic as McDonald’s, they want you to develop a more diverse ranged menu. I like anime, it can be artistic, but It can be kinda too typical.
@syannejohnson65452 жыл бұрын
@@whoknowswhocares885 Yes, that's how it is. They don't really want students to follow that formulaic techniques and look that anime has. Most professors just want you to experiment and develop with your style and not copy or paste the style constantly, which most beginners and even some intermediate artists do. Taking inspiration from anime and culture behind it is okay by most professors. However, some professors really do have a stigma against it because it's not the classical art they consider to be "real art."

My friend whose a very talented artist went to an art college in Copenhagen, he dropped out after 3 months, not because of being demoralized or not keeping his projects up to date, but because he legit punched the most talented girl in his year on the face after she kept insulted his classmates like "Honestly how did you get accepted here? Your art looks like something a donkey shat out, Ooooooh did daddy say keep following your dreams? Honestly sweetheart your daddy lied also probably about your skill" she kept saying stuff like that from what I heard. Until one day she said something really disrespectful to my friend's classmate, her dad had died, and she said "Sorry about your dad but look at the bright side, at least you can stop hearing all about his hopes for you" my friend got up, punched her in the face, broke her painting in half and then went to the teacher's offices and said "I'd like to drop out please" My friend now works for an advertising agency as an animator, after getting an internship there. The moral of the story is, if someone needlessly bullies or criticize your art, give them the middle finger and ignore them, because they ain't worth it, my friend really didn't want to hit that girl, but he did, and he ended up in a lot of sh*t afterwards, long story short, he didn't get a fine or arrested but he did get a restraining order, and that will follow him everywhere.....but still he said it was worth it, that talented girl never bothered anyone after that incident.

Do you know any art history? Have you learned about what Jackson Pollock, the first impressionist painters have done? How they've changed the way we think about art and what that freedom allowed? Trust me, if you like art it's rather fascinating and admirable. Also, those teachers who do that clearly didn't pay attention in their schooling, and aren't great teachers. Though in HS I can see why they don't want to see that, if you're a student who legitimately thinks about jumping in to that career. The fundamentals are very important to get down first, makes everything else a lot easier. I've learned this the hard way

So when you hand them a stylised artwork, they know you copied the style and elements from the other artists (and copied their mistakes as well).

@Kemchi I’m an animation major soon to enter junior year in my art school and if you are willing to put time and effort in fulfilling your dream, give it a shot. It’s definitely no easy walk of the park. I relate to the video (got good laughs out of it) but everyone’s experience is different. By the end of the day, it depends on what you want and how much time you want to put into it. There are drop outs for those not willing to, but life and decisions comes with risks. I say keep your head held high and see where you’ll go. If it doesn’t work out, always have plan B in mind.

I'm a nineth grade Aussie girl in Melbourne and I desperately want to become a fine artist. But because of the reputation that art school has. Like how it is a waste of time and won't get you a job unless you're really talented. Im also terrified of my future and it also does give me severe anxiety and depression. And I don't help it by watching videos or reading websites that contain this kind of stuff. But I am hopeful since I was excepted into an art academy in school and my work was satisfactory. But it does kind of make me think I have some sort of chance in the future. Hopefully with enough practice and time I can become the fine artist I aspire to be. Because at the end of the day it all depends on what you want in your life and what job you will enjoy doing.

Im an upcoming graphic design major and cannot tell you how excruciating it is to be pressured on being “the best.”. I have experience with apps like AE, procreate and others so using the bigger platforms like photoshop and Adobe illustrator was no biggie after learning the basics, it actually made me even more passionate to keep making more designs and artworks when I have the time to draw. Then there’s pressure from other classes I find no use of such as 3d design, we’re not even making stuff digitally it’s all just wasting material and if it doesn’t look like the eiffal tower or the past “exceptional” students works, then all of that effort I spent days doing is thrown in the trash. I was always pressured to become an A student and got my useless deans list scholarships to show off for my family who also thinks grades define intelligence. I hate the deadlines to create something epic, the useless essays and “cooperation” when no one wants to commit with me to begin with. I suffer with mental illness and psychosis, I sometimes blame myself for making it worse by coming to art school but what can I do when there’s a bigger goal down the road 😞

Sorry man, I'm still going to art school. After watching this video, for the past year and a half since release, I felt more inclined to go instead of not going to college or university after high school. I never thought I would ever continue school after high school, but ever since you realized this video, I felt that I finally had an excuse for my parents to not worry about my future, they once thought they were going to be stuck with me until I was 30 (This was bad for me and them), but now they're sad that that may not be the case anymore (Basically, they care about me now because I have a 'realistic' future. To me, the point of art is to break that 'realistic' code, but it gave the opposite effect for them. I hate the word *realistic* with every fiber of my being, but our different perspectives towards the same journey, surprisingly held the same result, comfort. Comfort in a definitive future. As you said, that diploma is a great excuse for getting people off your back, and that type of power can be easily acquired through such a meaningless piece of paper. Just because I'll have it, doesn't mean I'll use it! I just want the fun that comes along with making animes and manga as an early living, finally making my way to game development and making many things that I've dreamt of for the better of humanity. All of these things will be freelanced, so I won't work for anyone, I'll just make my own company. Now, since I told you the long story, here is the short version: Ever since I saw this video, I've been thinking, thinking about my future. As well as everything I want to learn and accomplish throughout my early life, stretching far beyond my death timelessly. - Thank you, and you're welcome for the most backhanded compliment in existence. You changed my mind on a life-changing decision, so, thank you.

My friend decided to major in art for a bit right after we graduated. She decided she didn’t like the way the program was run and changed her major before her bachelors. She was good at art and did very well, just didn’t see a reason to go through the stress of the program when she didn’t like how the ran it. She does still make art and sell it but she says she hated the environment of her art program and felt she learned far too little from it to make it worth continuing. I decided against going to any type of art program merely because I like to make my art for myself. It’s always been more a stress relief and never felt any need to turn it into a career. That doesn’t mean I’m against selling my paintings, I just didn’t feel a need to cater my art towards anyone else’s preference. I take advice from my art friends though. They give amazing advice. And frankly I learned a lot from them because we had an absolutely horrible art teacher freshman through halfway through junior year (though the other half of junior year was a long term sub, the best sub, but still not an amazing art teacher). We mostly taught each other and got through art classes out of sheer stubbornness. I’m not too sure I’d want to pursue an art focused degree. I like what I get taught and like making the connections with people that also art passionate over the same thing as me, but the way the programs are often structured leaves much to be desired. And they don’t tend to do the one thing I feel many artists want, which is set them up with the connections they need to be independent artists. Some do, don’t get me wrong, I know that much, but for the amount of art programs out there, there isn’t enough of them that do this. So when I take art classes I more do so casually or to help me set up my portfolio for this gigs I do find for myself that I find interesting. I probably do need to sign up for classes again though. With covid I stopped looking but I’d like to rework my portfolio and update it. The isolation may have given me more time to work but I feel my skills have slipped more than I’d like. I don’t think I will ever pursue art as a major or attend an art school. I have other passions that are just as important to me and I only intend to keep art as a coping mechanism and something I just prefer as a hobby. I like it, but not the career part of it enough to do full time.

Unfortunately, if either your school (or your talents) are mediocre, regardless of college course, you’ll end up jobless upon graduating. I’m now a bachelor’s degree holder and board passer, but I’m mediocre, so even if my school can recommend me, the company won’t hire me unless they’re in dire need of new staff. I just draw day in day out these days in hopes of getting noticed in the internet, and then financial opportunities will start coming at me. (This doesn’t stop me from looking for a “regular” job of course). Also, hobbies keep people sane. Drawing keeps me sane, especially when negative thoughts get the better of me.

there are tons of firms that need graphic design, nice logos, publicity, a website, etc. they rarely advertise that they need such services. you're effectively a small business as an artist, so it's important to attend local chamber of commerce events or related meetups to see if they need help. don't know if art school teaches sales or getting customers, but it's an essential routine.

I always felt that pressure in school to go into a good school and study a good major to get good money, all I ever felt was that pressure, but I never knew what I liked, or what was even possible, I thought about doing things I liked like game design as a high schooler, even took 3 years of design classes in HS teaching me a lot if basics like photoshop, But I didn't because I felt it didn't align with all that pressure, so after 4 years in psychology I am failing and won't be allowed back next year....but of once I feel like I know what I want to do.... living a life when am 45 in an animation studio, game, movie, even just corporate ad photoshoping, just being creative with my life and having that fun, its what I want....but I have 4 years of failed schooling, can I go even more indebt to go to art somewhere else? (I am in Canada so it is far cheaper but still a lot of money for someone). I am drawing, every day if even a little, I want to improve and I am improving, I am just unsure if I can carve a life out for myself. Well that's my little story, I just hope everything works out with some good honest work and creativity.

My advice is to go to trade school, most schools around my area offer web design which requires learning to code which will be useful for game design plus you get paid too

I'm only in the first semester and I couldn't relate more. It's fun and everything but it's also a lot of work and you don't really have time to do the art you actually enjoy doing. It's funny because I live and study in Brazil and yet you described exactly what it feels like to be in art school. I cried when you talked about teachers hating anime, it's so true.

Introversion and extroversion aren't about how outgoing you are. They're about what recharges you. Being alone helps you recharge? Introvert. Going out with friends or socializing helps you recharge? Extrovert. Somewhere in the middle? You might be an ambivert. It's nuanced. It's a spectrum. Having Chronic Fatigue, it's difficult to say which I am, but I think ambivert makes the most sense, for me. People misuse these words all the time. To the point where my mom and mom-in-law literally think introversion is *unhealthy*, and constantly try to "fix" me. It's ridiculous, and frankly tiresome.

Yeah, as someone who has some degree of social anxiety and depression, it's hard for me to say what I'm really am too! Thinking back at how I was when I was younger isn't very helpful either since I don't ever recall feeling "drained" or "charged" in different situations. I would feel loneliness at times, but I'm not sure that counts as feeling tired or drained in any way. Maybe I'm an ambivert but I don't know.

I watched this when it came out and I thought that maybe I really should give up the thought of majoring in arts. Fast forward to 2020 and I'm a fine arts major (give this a read if you're considering it) Do I regret my decision? No lmao I've wanted this since I was 4 and the tuition fee is pretty good Is it stressful? Absolutely, especially since our system is set up so that your first year is a foundation year, to build up your visual library, train your muscle memory, help with your technique, and teach you all the basics from the ground up. It also includes the principles of engineering drawing for some reason but it's fun nonetheless. If you find a good college with an affordable tuition fee, you'll also need to consider the fact that ART SUPPLIES ARE VERY EXPENSIVE. This includes running to the store every two weeks because you're out of a specific type and size of paper, having to ask the upperclassmen for information on what type of supplies to get (and they came in clutch with a full list of everything we will need for the first year, along with their prices and where to buy them, love those guys) and even buying used stands and boards. Upperclassmen, depending on where you are, at least in my college, are nice, they've been through hell so they know what it's like for us, and it's like a huge family tbh. Everyone's very helpful The critique, if you can't handle it, is harsh. Still life drawing lectures are long, yes, but important for your muscle memory and understanding of light, shadows, shape and form. One of the most important things you'll need is to learn how to do constantly is socialize. Your classmates might know something you don't, you'll have to constantly ask for critique and advice, whether it be from a friend, the TAs, or the professors. Another thing is time management. If you aren't naturally good at this, it's going to be a tough first few months. To put it simply, do your work when you get it. Don't put off anything because you WILL get more assignments that you need to be prepared for. God forbid you stay up all night finishing assignments because you procrastinated, the last thing you want to do is attend a lecture with zero sleep. You really need all the sleep you could possibly get. If you live far away from college, or don't have dorms, you absolutely must get a locker (if they're available) carrying the equipment around is a pain. Your presence online is important, too, you can meet new classmates on your first week of you're all in an online group, get to know each other better, and this is standard stuff, but your social circle needs to be big. You'll need all the help you can get from friends who are absolutely willing to help. Whether it be schedules, extra supplies if you're broke, or heck, even mental support. College takes up a lot of your time, and it's a huge change from high school, obviously. Sometimes you'll have to stay at college until pretty late at night to finish your work, some students have bought clothes to sleep over there. TL;DR - you need to be absolutely sure that you want to major in fine arts. You have to socialize, be able to accept harsh criticism, and be good at time management. Sleep is important. Manage your funds well, don't cheap out on art supplies, you need to make them last, buy (or borrow) used items from upperclassmen if you need to.
