Problems with my carburetor. Rough idling, replaced vacuum hoses, cleaned with carby cleaner. Idle surges between 1000-1200rpm (Idle should be 800-850rpm). Can't get idle any lower or it stalls. Cleaned out the PCV and the IAC - same problems. I also learnt that the camera being too close to the engine is awful - but you get the gist of the problem - At the end I turned the engine off with the key and it ran on/dieseled - part of the issue? Had to keep my hand on the throttle to stop it from stalling as well until it was proper hot - Should've used the choke I guess but good enough. The Spark Plug leads are 500km old. Fuel pump is a year old. Today I replaced the Spark plugs, Dizzy Cap, points & condenser - didn't replace the rotor arm (whoops - but I did clean it).
It ended up being the point gap! I've since converted to an electronic distributor and haven't had a problem since.

Haven't done anything for the time being, I'll be getting some new tyres tomorrow for dirt cheap so that's priority for now. Need to check the fuel float and change the dwell then I'll change the timing and have another crack. A trick I was told (I haven't tried yet) Is to pinch all the hoses and if something changes you know that's related. Cheers for the help so far.

as fuel will not be allowed through the idle circuits. also if its running on, this maybe be because your idling off your main jet instead of the idle port, meaning when the key is turned off, the fuel supply is not cut for a clean shut down, instead the throttle plate is slightly cracked, therefore letting main jet fuel through just enough to detonate a couple of revs :-)

if you need to keep the throttle cracked to keep it idling then the idle fuel solenoid may be faulty or not receiving power. there is a solenoid bolted into the rear of the carburetor with a green wire from memory it should be receiving +12v with ignition on, with an almost audible click when it is cycled. if this is not doing its job you will have a hell of a time tuning it.

Yeah I took the solenoid out, cleaned it, put it back in, tested it and it was all good. It ended up being my points were out - I've since converted to an electronic distributor and idles perfectly fine. Thanks for the help though.

yeah a vacuum lek or carby problem. yeah it's a bugger that they don't make a dwell meter for 3cyl(sorry i didn't realize it was 3cyl). i agree that the points are probably correct. i was tempted to say idle mixture. vac leak or carby problem.

Supposedly you can read it from the 6 cylinder setting and just double it for a 3 cylinder! I'm going to go to local pick-a-part and get another carby and see if that fixes the problem.

i would use a dwell angle meter to set the points, check the timing, check the idle mixture. check the inlet manifold gasket for leaks using wd40 or similar. if that doesn't help message me

So I played around a bit more, played with the contact points and suddenly all was good, played with the timing a bit and now it's idling okay at 1000rpm. I can't get it any lower without the engine getting really rough - or I start playing cat & mouse with the timing and idle speed.

EGR clogged the vacuum line.... happens to most EGR equipped vehicles.

Problem is it's a 3 cylinder engine, and the only dwell meter reader i've got is for a 6/8 cylinder - would it still be useable or would I have to get a 4 cylinder dwell reader? Timing was set with vacuum advanced blocked off so that's definitely fine. Idle mixture doesn't seem to do anything (that'd have to be vacuum leak then wouldn't it?). I'll hit it again tomorrow with soapy water. Cheers for the reply.

Guys I need help with my 4ac anyone please some advise ? Every 1 in the comments seems to know xctly what they talking about , my issues is relating to car not being able to idel or remain on without bogging down

Sounds like a blown carb fuse...

put a Suzuki carb they are compatible.... i had the same problem with mine too

Hi I have a 4ac Toyota 8valve I have a similar problem , I was wondering if any could help me out cars been standing for 6month , car keeps bogging down before being able to get to operating temp , Turing on dizzy to get some pick up still dieing out , making the same air squirting sound out of carb ?
