Restoring it gets my vote. Modified cars are cool but so are classics. If it had been modified in its day then I'd be all for restoring it as a modded car but seeing as it's schmiko bringing it back to its former glory seems like the right thing to do.

Many years ago, as an apprentice I worked on a couple of 2 Stroke 3 cylinder LJ suzukis. The oil injection system on them worked very will, once set and with good quality oil, very little smoke. I would suggest this working properly over pre-mix.
@LS1CobraАй бұрын
Full crank case reed design opens up lots of opportunities for swapping out top ends. You could possibly adapt a couple of KTM300 barrels to that bottom end. That would give you modern 2-stroke head and port designs as well as exhaust power valves for a broader spread of power. Also keep the oil injection system. Early SAAB 2 strokes had some issues with seizing on prolonged downhill runs as there was no oil getting to the motor with the throttle shut.
@johngibson3837Ай бұрын
Keeping oil injection is definitely a good idea
@jcthe2ndАй бұрын
keep oil injection that only runs when the throttle is shut
@LS1CobraАй бұрын
@@jcthe2nd Oil injection is likely directly to the crank case so the motor still gets some oil regardless of throttle. Most systems on 2 stroke motorcycles have a valve tied to the throttle that increases flow as the throttle opens but it still has a minimum flow when the throttle is closed.
@shize9ineАй бұрын
If the engine ever gets trashed, a classic 2-stroke 3 cylinder Suzuki GT750 water cooled engine would be sick. Better than a KTM thumper. Makes about 50hp but can make 175hp with carbs and exhaust.
@LS1CobraАй бұрын
@@shize9ine KTM300 is a 2 stroke. That would make for a 600CC 2 stroke twin. GT750 wont even make 175HP with nitromethane. GT750 is also piston port, not real efficient by todays standards. I knew a bloke that converted one to reed valve and that made good improvements but cant be done without major modifications to the barrels.

@Chuckles1418Ай бұрын
That was awesome! - as others have said autolube needs to stay on the little beast. They are reliable and the best bit is it moderates the oil ratio in most applications ie full throttle max 2T delivery. Unsolicited Tip 1: On long downhill runs a few blips of the throttle adds extra oil and fuel to prevent a hot seize as a result of a lack of cooling and lube effect of fuel and oil mix. So looking forward to seeing Jolly rock down the road.

Am enjoying the Daihatsu work as much as any other previous Skid Factory project. These are classic cars and need to be restored as close to factory as possible. I’ve recently finished refreshing a 1995 G202 Charade with the 3 cylinder 993 cc motor that was unregistered for 4 years and it’s really satisfying to have brought it back to life and back on the road.

Woody, On what you can do with a tiny car; on my way to this episode I saw an Austin Mini hauling around Good wood Racecourse at full chat giving a strong looking Mustang V8 a real fit for laps. But is was a full up race car with all that entails, I'm sure, and I'm also sure it will never be a street car again, either. Interesting little car- many of the Japanese Kei cars are- the little sports models especially. Al's buddy, Benny's Custom Garage is into the Cappuccinos, so you might call over there. On your crank; if your buddy isn't available, any motorcycle shop should be able to handle the disassembly and reassembly with the new bearings- trapped ball bearings are pretty common on MC multi cylinder engines.

Just make sure you measure the bore before ordering rings, as being a 2 stroke it could well be oversized already and need the next size over pistons and rings. In the mean time, keep your eyes open for a wrecked ST1100 or a Triumph Rocket 3. Cant wait to see what this little nugget turns into.

Watching that motor come apart sure did reminded me of the fancy liquid cooled two stroke sled engines from over here in the frozen wasteland of Hoth. If you can sort out machining and maybe some welding of the crank case to attach your bellhousing, come up with a way to mount your flywheel on a tapered crankshaft output and figure out if the crank bearings can handle the thrust from working the clutch, then a snowmobile engine might be perfect for you. There is a whole lot of customization, performance and real world experience that could be tapped to build the exact motor you want! Only thing that might challenge the sled crowd would be tuning the carbs for +30C instead of -20C :) Thanks for the vids and best of luck with the rebuild!

Looks like the same drivetrain that was available in Oz in the '70's S38 HiJet. If you need to, you can bore the block and use Victa mower pistons (don't ask,...) or swap in the 547cc motor from the S40 model. 1 litre two-stroke Jimny engine might fit in there too.

Full exhaust is important because of bottom end torque. Keep it stock for the purest because you have an excellent example.

Keeping it stock would make it more desirable to collectors. As soon as it's modified with an engine replacement, for example, its value drops. Additionally, it retains its historical significance in its original configuration.

The architecture of that engine looks very similar to a Fuji engine I had in a 1995 Polaris jetski. @ManiacRacingАй бұрын
Early comment, but I strongly urge you to keep the oil injection hooked up. Some two strokes use the oil pump to lubricate the main bearings. You can still run premix for safety, just at a lower ratio so it doesn't smoke like crazy. Check on your engine before you remove the oil system!

That has reed valves 4 years before bikes started using them, and big ones too. That looks fairly modern rather than old piston port design porting. Port and pipe it favouring torque, find a couple of trials bike cylinders with powervalves. you want it to pull harder rather than top speed.
