Yeah they're good. I've lived in Japan over 20 years and have ahd a few Kei cars, including now. I have a Daihatsu Move. Kei cars are actually restricted by Japanese law in performance and shape when they build them. The reason they are boxed shape these days is because they have specific guidelines on size/dimensions as well as engine HP output. Most modern Kei cars are at the limit of that size. That being said, it is common enough for people here to tune them up... although technically illegally. They're not getting supercars or anything but they definitely become more practical for keeping up with traffic. Well North American traffic anyway. Things are a bit slower over here.

@@ZaWyvern that’s some excellent info! Info like this can be harder to find with me not reading Japanese or being able to see the rules there. @PhilipBlank Жыл бұрын
It is being imported under a different set of rules than the DOT’s DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards which is the regulation setting the 25 year mark. This is being imported as equipment is the same class as say a tractor. It does not directly fit as a car and in many states can only be driven off road on your property. Some states/counties allow it to be registered as a mini-truck and then driven on the road or between two off road locations. Rules vary by state.

Is it street legal in the USA?
@PhilipBlank8 ай бұрын
That’s a maybe. No because it is sold for off road use, but there are many states and counties that will allow it to be plated. In general though it’s not good to be state hoping unless you know the rules and polices of where you’re going, definitely not highway legal!

There is the left hand side of this kind of car.
@PhilipBlankАй бұрын
I’d imagine so! But probably very rare in the US.

I don't think it's goofy at all; I just think the steering wheel is on the wrong side.

How did you get that in America? because it does not look like it’s 25 years old
@PhilipBlank10 ай бұрын
This was imported new and is a brand new van, it’s classified as an off road vehicle, but in some states can be plated and used on-road. Restrictions still apply so it’s not a car.

I would love one with 150+ horsepower so it's highway everyday capable.

That would be incredible!

daihatsu has just stopped shipping all of their products due to irregularities in testing during production.
@PhilipBlank11 ай бұрын
Oh interesting! Any idea what specifically was the testing on, brakes or thermal event concerns?
@negimarossy952311 ай бұрын
@@PhilipBlank the japanese web site indicates 80 tests including side collision test, rear-end collision test, hip point test, a pedestrian head protection performance test, pedestrian leg protection test, headlamp leveling test etc. details are terribly nonsensical such as misstatement of VIN number, falsification of test results and change of weight, mileage or number of tests etc (shrug).

what’s the name of the tires??
@PhilipBlank11 ай бұрын
These are IPT UltraCross R 23x8.0 -12, an off-road use tire. Here is an Amazon link: amzn.to/3RTeOSm or check out MotoSport’s website, these shouldn’t be hard to come by!

I've not seen any optional ramps, but someone out there could design one I'm sure.

Would sell A BUNCH IN USA !! BET
@PhilipBlank Жыл бұрын
Value is higher because of the difficulty to deal with laws, but with would sell well if restrictions were reduced, though when does the gov ever walk backwards on rules.

How much? Road legal in the US?
@PhilipBlank10 ай бұрын
Road legal in certain areas in certain states, not really a easy rule across the board. You can find any range of them from a few k up to a new one like this being $25k. All down to miles and year!

Nice car. Whats the tire and mags size? How many inch is the lift
@PhilipBlank Жыл бұрын
The tires are ITP 32 x 8.00-12, little bitty guys. The lift is about an inch.

Hence the resistance for the DOT on importation haha. But it’s actually decent in crash test ratings and has airbags but in general this is not used on the road much.
@カブトムシ-k1r Жыл бұрын
The car is only sold in Japan, though? Is it stolen? (Daihatsu=Toyota) When you drive this car, Mercedes and Rover seem to be just trash cars.
@PhilipBlank Жыл бұрын
Haha this is not stolen, they do send them out to the US, there are just not a lot of them. It is a high quality car but I still appreciate a good Rover and Mercedes, I’ve done videos on both!

the looks woulldn't be an issue for me but the very low horsepower would be a deal breaker. it would not fare well in a crash either. time will tell. they laughed at the vw when they showed up here. the busses were very slow too.
@PhilipBlank Жыл бұрын
Yup the power is nothing of significance for sure! But it’s a handy little get around machine for short range. No desire to see how it would do in a crash either!
