We Finns - specially we older ones - talk if we have something to say. Small talk feels kind of false, words without meaning. Why bother... I think we want to observe first before starting conversation. Many times in silence sprouts the deepest trust and the most enduring friendships.

And one can also express themselves in many silent gestures and facial expressions without talking. And I find japanise are very good in it too like for example ritsurei in every Judo or Sumo fights and some other meetings.

I just moved to Helsinki and really enjoy that Finns are "quiet". There are no loud conversations in the trains and trams or bars and also no or barely any hooting in traffic. It's really enjoyable to walk around here.

I agree :) Nice to hear you are enjoying the Finnish silence! haha

Yes, but unfortunately not all are able to be quiet in the train. For example some idiots blast music from their phones or some foreigners speak loudly.

Daiki you got good point. This is also why I love Finland cause silence can be accepted. As introverted person, it is quite energy consuming to talk and entertain people. Although I know how to do it, but it is against my personality. Good channel you have👍 greating from a Chinese living in Finland for 9 years

I resonate with this. My background is from a culture where silence is/was uncommon and awkward. I learned that I was anxious when being in awkward silence when in someone’s presence. So I would talk to fill in the space and uncomfortable feelings. If I am silent that is a sign that I am comfortable around someone.

They say, "Speech is silver, silence is golden". Could you make a video on how to survive the winter and not get depressed in Finland? You don't see the sun often in winter. The days are shorter and it's cold. How do you deal with that? Seasonal Affective Disorder seems common there too. Hope that you're doing alright, Daiki!
@DAIKIFinlandLife2 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea, and indeed I should have made that kind of video already before this winter. I'll think about it...thanks :)

I find that nature is one of those things that can be important for this. Perhaps that is why finnish people enjoy nature so much. When sun comes back in the spring that seem to feel better and better each year as I grow older. It's almost as if I'm starting to worship the sun, it feels so good.

I've noticed that regular and hard excercise combined with a good diet containing healthy fats and high intake of vitamin D really helps during the winter months. Oh and also if you have a gf/bf spend time with them :)

Well said, Aidan...Well said about golden silence! As far as Winter is concerned, I feel for you. I live in New England USA and here the winters a bit shorter. All I can say is you take the bad with the good. When I was a child in Finland, I loved the winter wonderland and was outside most hours of the day, light or dark...but now I am older. I can't even imagine what you are going through during the Winter months.

I think Finn's are shy, introverted but also with a nobullshit mindset. You won't talk nonsense with them, this is a nice respect for words & time on earth.

When there is silence all is good, when there isn't trouble abounds, but us Finns can handle it with swiftness and mythical style

It is said that when you are comfortable with each other, you don’t have to fill the silence with small talk and still feel at ease. I never thought that I was very noise sensitive and it never bothered me when I travelled in other European, South American on Asian countries, but when I visited New York, the cacophony drove me insane. The cars honking, people talking SO LOUD, sirens blairing… I almost went in to a panic mode. I sometimes note how quiet everything is, even in the Helsinki city center and wonder, wouldn’t it be nice if it would be more ”livelier”, but I then remember my NY experience and I think I prefere Helsinki/ Finland and Finns as they are.

True, I know how it feels :) These days I'm a bit too used to this Finnish quietness so I might get annoyed by noise easily haha

@@DAIKIFinlandLife It is so liberating not having to engage in mindless chatter. When my father talked, the family listened...and he did not talk often.

I think most Europeans, apart from those from the South, are usually considered introverted or quiet. I can think of some cultures where this isn't the case, such as the Dutch. But I found that being an introvert from an extrovert country, I adapt to life in Europe much more easily. I don't really have too much experience with Finnish people apart from the ones I work with, but the main difference I notice, at least from my perspective, is that they don't really have smooth edges, or more bluntly, they don't have as much manners as other European cultures I've been exposed to. I personally like the German and Polish people, they are also generally introverted, but might have a bit more emotional warmth or an appreciation for being kind to strangers. There are many ways to classify people, someone being more logical than emotional too. I recall that Finnish score much higher for 'emotionality', whereas Slavic cultures tend to score high for logic.

We Poles are very helpful & kind, probably more to foreigners than each other. Poles have a stupid need to know better, have a right, lacking ability to reform own wrong convictions. Except of most of us who will always accept westerner opinion has more valid just because of coming from West. It's a stupid inferiority complex. The wish for ppl on west to like us instead of basis respect for who we simply are. That's why I like open Poles only in half, and the closed poles also in half. I basically halfhate halflove every of my fellow polish kin... It's hard. But it's the only honest way.
