The verse that stuck out to me the most was verse 24: "leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift." This verse hit me with the fact that Jesus wants us to have acts of love and friendship, because an offering/prayer going to Him with hate/rage in your mind isn't what He wants. He wants us to love one another fully and worship Him together. We always have the Holy Spirit to help us reconcile with someone.

The verse that stuck out to me or the verse that I got today was verse 16 which said : “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” This verse really hit me hard because, as Christians, sometimes we’re scared to publicly show that we are followers through our actions, but as Jesus tells us, we are the light of the world and also the salt of the world, so we cannot shy away from proclaiming that we are sons and daughters of God because light’s purpose is to illuminate a room, not blend it in with the darkness. God Bless!!✝️

Verse 48- But you are to be perfect, even as your Father is perfect. I believe this is achieved in Love. If our every action is bound in Love, whether to friends or enemies, we can walk in perfection.

The way I get it is, if anyone physically comes at you, show him the other side, and that side is; our spiritual side. Meaning we keep calm but we engage in prayers and ask Jesus to intervene on our behalf.

Many verses stick out to me but one thing that sticks out to me was Matthew 5: 25, it says "do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear". This stood out to me because I always worry about these things and I feel answered after and by reading this in God's word

We should really love others like Jesus. He did not engage in violence himself yet he still won a war. So sometimes in God’s eyes it maybe be just to engage in physical violence like defense from someone hurting someone else, but i don’t think it should be our first reaction. God bless

I really enjoyed today’s reading! I loved the insight about Jesus’ emphasis on keeping our virtue and addressing heart issues. I think there is so much freedom in knowing Jesus’ words were meant to protect us, not push us towards legalism.

Wow that was excellent. Thank you Darren for your insight. I would agree that every situation demands a unique response as guided by the Holy Spirit. I once believed in self defense in all circumstances until I read an article from one of the pacifist denominations you mentioned. Their reason for not defending self is that we are saved and know where we are going in death. By letting the perpetrator live we give him more time on Earth to respond to the gospel. Though I don't completely agree with that, it did make me pause and think.

Stephen Brown I find the various arguments intriguing. I'm learning to admit that this is all complex and good people come on both sides of most of the arguments. That said, I still will fight for what Christians through the centuries have believed are the core elements of the faith. Those are things we hold closely.

Shannon LeBlanc I believe it speaks to the integrity of the Christian. In today's culture it seems you have to get everything in writing to protect yourself or you have to back a statement with " I swear to g*d". As Christians we should always deliver what we promise. Our word by itself should be all that is needed, we shouldn't have to swear by anything to give what we say more validity.

You are "interpreting" the "turn the other cheek" verse to satisfy your own sense of personal ethics, not what Jesus actually said or means. There are *no* verses in the bible where Jesus tells you you should defend yourself or your loved ones. None. His "Turn the other cheek" is plain and simple, not open to interpretation. "Do not resist an evildoer". How much simpler can it be? As for defending your daughter -- Jesus doesn't consider family to be important. Luke 14:26 - “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as his own life, he can’t be my disciple.". You are supposed to HATE your own family. Why would he want you to defend something you're supposed to hate? If you just read the bible straight, and don't try to interpret it through your own sense of ethics and needs, what Jesus wants of you is to abandon all material wealth, abandon your family and wander the streets preaching "the good word", and begging for a living. Matthew 19:21, Matthew 10:34-36, Matthew 10:9-14.
@BranchTogether3 жыл бұрын
You are grossly misrepresenting the balance of scripture. There is much about caring for your family. For starters: 1 Tim 5:8 "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."
@ColinFox3 жыл бұрын
@@BranchTogether Ok - how do you reconcile that with the scriptures I mentioned? How do you decide which scriptures to take at face value, and which to look through some kind of re-interpretation lens? Also - I was quoting what Jesus said. You were quoting what Paul wrote to someone named Timothy in a letter. Do you think that Paul's ideas carry the same weight as direct quotes from Jesus himself? Paul was just an apostle after all.
@BranchTogether3 жыл бұрын
1) we have covered the whole NT chapter by chapter, we may have covered some of the references you make. 2) all Scripture is inspired and should be understood the best we can in light of the rest. It doesn't contradict itself. If you think it does you aren't understanding something, which is one of the reasons we should all be a part of faith communities with elders to help us navigate complex questions like this. 3) it's very irresponsible to suggest we are supposed to hate our family. For instance, husband's should LOVE their wives as Christ loves the church and gave himself for it!! The hate Jesus mentions is probably a relative sense.
@ColinFox3 жыл бұрын
@@BranchTogether1. So you can't think of refutations off the top of your head? 2. I *am* an elder -- I'm 57. I know enough about life & language to be able to interpret things with my own brain, my own experience, my own wisdom. Letting someone else tell me what something means without it being logically obvious is clearly not the way of true Freedom of Will. If your point can't be supported by logical arguments based on evidence (in this case, evidence of what's written in scripture), then your point is not valid. I supported my conclusion with references to what Jesus actually said. To counter this, you must counter it with things he actually said, not vague platitudes. 3. You make this assertion but it's not based on Jesus actual teachings. Jesus didn't respect his own family - he left them outside while he talked to his followers. Jesus definitely wanted you to be broke - Blessed are the birds of the fields (ie: don't get a job), It is easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle than a rich man enter heaven (don't have physical possessions). Do not store up possessions here on earth, where they can be moth eaten or stolen (again - be poor). What do you have that Jesus says that counters this?
@BranchTogether3 жыл бұрын
When I say "elder" I'm referring to the biblical term elder or "presbuteros" - which is someone appointed authority as a church leader - it's synonymous with pastor, and has absolutely nothing to do with age. And no, I don't usually invest the time to go tit for tat with people in the comments here because in my discernment, people rarely change their mind from quick comment exchanges (especially after disagreeing with a 5+ minute video we have made - Prov 26:4 comes to mind). I care about people growing in faitih, which is why I strongly suggest everyone build relationships in a local church where the elders (whatever age they are!) who have spent years studying the Scripture can be a guide to the community. When you have relationships and trust together you can better talk through these complicated things and grow in faith. One last point, it's reasonable to take a pacifist position after reading Jesus - many of my friends in the Anabaptist tradition take this stance but so much else of what you are saying is just wrong. For instance, Blessed are the birds of the fields - has nothing to do with not getting a job. Good luck on your journey.
