why not just maintain and replace what leaks?? no reason to own a car and not replace worn and broken parts.

Nice. I've daily driven one of these since 2018 and I tend to think it makes mundane drives enjoyable. This video's title feels like clickbait to me, there are just far far worse cars to deal with... and usually it involves having too many mods, ha

@@gardenpaper There are definitely cheaper/easier cars to have as a first one. Always keep in your mind that you're driving a RWD, mid-engine layout car (especially in the rain/cold). I'm still alive, so maybe they're not as dangerous as some people tell :)

I think what some people wanna know are beyond the obvious challenges that come with driving ANY lowered car with limited space. 99% of these examples are what most people could predict before watching it. Questions I wanna know come from being a non-owner who has no opportunity to sit in one. For instance, how is the frontal visibility?? The achiles heel of every other RWD car with a front engine is that the hood is so long you can't sense the front of the car very accurately at all, no matter if it's short like an MX5 or long like a Soarer, they all share massive blind spots in the very front of the car to the road. In the MR2 however, you can literally see where the front wheels and the edge of the bar is in relation to the road and objects such as parking bumps in a way not possible for normal front engine cars - thanks to it's sloping profile unique to being mid-engined. Is there any blind spots that someone who's never driven it must know about otherwise?? These are things that I'd wanna know about which nobody but a driver can ever tell you about for instance. Reverse parking, will probably be easily solved with a modern double din and backup camera... are there wiring challenges given the layout of the electrical system through the engine compartment?? wouldn't want high heat or rain to cause unforeseen gremlins or corrosion from how water could run down the routing.... lots of things to consider.
@omega1575
@omega1575 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I suspect it’ll be hard to see back corners when sitting in it
@Fuffcat
@Fuffcat 2 жыл бұрын
@@omega1575 true, and as an ND RF owner, it also exists here. But that's insignificant compared to the advantage you gain when you are driving 99% of the time and looking forward. No chance of accidentally scraping the front on walls or curbs from being too long or high which plagues all RWD front engine cars with long hoods. Its those God awful risen arches that even my ND has, prioritizing style from the outside over a visceral experience on the inside. The ND admittedly feels too cacooned even though it's a small car. If you can't feel the speed or see the road rushing beneath you, it kinda defeats the purpose of slow car fast. With mid engine cars like the mr2 and the spyder, the engineers clearly understood what crucal role the horizon line plays in the fun factor and senses you feel in a vehicle. This is why a slow motorcycle whilst wearing a half helmet where you can see everything is very fun at 50mph, but a hellcat is boring at 200mph. You can't see the road and it just feels like a movie or a fast elevator, maybe an airplane taking off which people can fall asleep to. Engineers need to quit the habit of making cars fast for nothing and start making them tangible to the senses again.

I know it's an old video, but I want to share my experience since the MR2 is my daily driver. Mine is the European version (non-turbo 3SGE) and it's basically stock. 1. City driving - not great at sitting in traffic, as the clutch is pretty heavy and it doesn't isolate you well from traffic noise. If traffic is flowing, then it's fine. 2. Highway driving - last summer I went on a 3,000 km (1,800 miles) trip and it was its second European trip with me. I must say it's not great, but it's cool :) It's not very stable at high speeds. I found that 110-120 km/h (around 70 mph) is a sweet spot for cruising speed, resulting in 3-3.25k rpm (note that the 3SGTE has a different gearbox, so it might be different). The seats are not too comfortable, and mine doesn't have AC or a cupholder, so yeah, not great for that. 3. Practicality - Better than you might expect; the trunk is fine for daily shopping or trips if you pack lightly. Unfortunately, the trunk becomes pretty warm since it's above the exhaust. As I mentioned, there are no cupholders, which is a bummer. The stock MR2 is not too low, so only high curbs are a problem, and it's tiny, so it's easy to park. Managed to transport office chair and christmas tree in it (no in the same time tho xD) 4. Reliability - Never once in 8 years of ownership have I had any problems that made me doubt my MR2 would get me home. 5. Enjoyment - give it some revs and your day becomes better, kids will point their fingers in awe. If the weather is good, drop that T-top and enjoy the sun; this car makes you smile. 6. Snap oversteer - once I got a bit too carried away and lost the original wheels to a snap oversteer accident, also it was on really crappy tires that came with the car. Bad judgement and lack of training on my part. If you're on solid tires and don't floor it while turning, you should be fine. In summary - if you don't have kids go for it.

I've owned my '91 turbo since 1994. It was my primary car until the late 2000's. Now it's just a "sometimes" car but I still love driving it. You're not going to fit 2x4's into it (duh) but you'd be surprised how much you actually can fit into it, even if sometimes you have to be a little creative.

i daily drive the toyota mr2. it's my only car and i'm very impressed on how possible it is to daily this. you can do groceries pretty easy because you have enough space on the trunk, you can easily go on a trip for some days with the space you have, and i like to think that since this is a sports car, because you have a mid-engine, at least you have a trunk ahaha. My MR2 is stock and i dont scratch the bumper like that, so you will be fine if you consider to make this a daily car. the gas consumption is pretty nice too. my car is the non turbo version. i don't know about the turbo version but i can make 450km with a full gas tank. Of course i cant fit a bike or furniture there, but since im an enthusiast... i would prefer to rent a van for a day and still having fun with my car. It's funny how a car can change people, but i agree that since i go to work with this car, im way happier than the usual normal day.
