Hi guys, thanks for watching! Let me know if you have any tips on drawing the figure while at home, in your sketchbook - any advice on how to keep a consistent drawing routine?! Leave a comment , and thanks again for tuning in.

Find a moment in your day that you find yourself “doing nothing” and try to add gesture drawing into that nothing time. Listening to an audio book, taking a tea break from cleaning, etc. Don’t get upset if it doesn’t look right work the same gesture again till you feel comfortable. Try to about 10mins of 2 minute poses a day at least. Definitely look up more than one source for this topic if you aren’t showing understanding in your drawing because this is a tough topic. Finally, watch many artist do this. There are several styles when gesture figure drawing. You may be a hybrid of others.

@@purpleslippers8 this is awesome advice! thanks for sharing this. Thats' so important to remember to use those moments when we're doing nothing as opportunities to get a quick gesture drawing or sketch in. 10 mins of 2 minute poses is such a small amount of time, and the payoff is so great. Also yes! there really are many styles of gesture drawing, good reminder!

I’m honestly glad to hear you think so being that you are a teacher! I find something is better than nothing! You loose it if you don’t use it. Natural talent only takes you so far. I'm always amazed at watching this type of drawing, when it's more gestural. It feels very freeing, but I've never been able to do it. Maybe I'm too concerned with it looking perfect! I'll have to try. Anyway, it was really interesting (and kind of relaxing) to watch.

I love being loose, but I quite often gravitate to making very structured and rigid drawings. Watching your videos inspired me to draw similar to you, wandering around with loose marks and committing where I feel. I had so much fun and absolutely love every page I drew today. It's interesting to look at the results and find marks that stand out to keep applying them later. Overall, focusing on mark-making is an excellent approach. Funny those drawing had even better proportions than they used to be when I was constructing the figure. I'm having a life-drawing session tomorrow evening. Let's see how it works live.

Thank you for your videos!! I binge watched several because your work is amazing!! When I was young, I took art lessons and he had me do quick sketches over and over… I hated it at the time, but those sessions are what made me a much better artist. I have found that now I don’t draw that way, but I love your method for figure drawing and actually think it fits my style better than the way I have been doing figure drawings (and the way everyone else does them). I have been doing a lot of digital portrait paintings, and I do a very rough quick style on those. I love the look of your work for figure drawings, and you have inspired me to try this and do more drawing for a while to try to get this method working for me. Thanks again!

I'd like you to speak about the feeling in the act of drawing. The reason is I get a sense of such calm from your approach. When I begin a drawing I soon find myself breathing hard feeling a bit anxious, and I think it's part of the process because of the intensity. So I'm wanting where this kind of core calmness comes from.
@Drawing-Life3 жыл бұрын
@journeymansix wow that's a really great question!! I hadn't fully thought about doing a video about it (I mentioned it briefly just the other day in my last video), but I'll definitely look into explaining this aspect more fully in my next one. It's great that you bring this up as it really is an important part of the process. But, I will say, you might be surprised to hear that actually I'm never calm when I'm drawing haha!! Maybe it does look like that in the videos, but each drawing always feels very intense because my approach to drawing is to figure it out as I go, so more often than not, I don't know if I'm quite getting it "right". So, to hear you say that you feel a bit anxious when you are drawing to me is very normal! But certainly there is a lot to talk about on this topic, and I'll definitely try to put a video together about this. Thanks for such a great suggestion

I think you go beyond the typical "how to" art video into an explanation of conveying the expressions you are feelling and seeing as you observe the model which launches into that deep artistic creativity that is not so easy to explain with words but you demonstrate it as you draw. Thank you so much for these lessons! For a beginner like me, is it better to use charcoal or pencil. I like the drama I can quickly do in charcoal, but I control pencil better.
@Drawing-Life Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this comment, it's wonderful to hear!! To answer your question, I think for a beginner, working with charcoal is a good option because it gives you the ability to get really expressive and thus to learn quickly about your own drawing language and your unique mark making. As you mention yourself a pencil leans more towards a controlled and careful approach, which I believe is best utilized once you have understood how you draw. I hope this makes sense! .... I will add however that any drawing tool also needs to be considered alongside the paper you are using. So, for example charcoal is not great on all paper - it works best on a paper like newsprint, and because this is cheap paper, it also gives you the freedom to make many drawings without worrying about wasting paper. Pencil on the other hand demands a better quality paper. So, keep that in mind. Thanks again for watching! :)

Thank you again for posting these videos. It's a bit painful to let go and get out of my "must control" commercial art comfort zone, but even in 24hrs I'm seeing some progress in my work! Already things are a little more expressive, though I still have miles to go on finding my marks etc. 👍🙇

That's amazing to hear! It does take a bit of a shift going from design thinking to responsive mark making :) But, don't underestimate how your marks are already there, and it can be an instantaneous breakthrough, once you see things differently. Personally I found 2 books really helpful for this: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and The Natural Way to Draw. Hope that helps! At any rate, enjoy the journey!! :)

I don't think it will take you a long time to learn - this approach is about focusing on how you see, and how you respond,, and that's quite a natural and instinctive thing... if you try to do it with analysis and anatomy then that will take time to learn because that approach is more focused on external skills.... Thanks! i think getting the proportions correct comes with practice - you could focus on that at first, but I feel as a beginner it's good to focus on making gesture drawings like this, it helps you eventually to master a very intuitive understanding of proportion, that is completely linked to your mark making, and i think that's a better approach, just my take on it though. :) Thank you so much for watching!

Hi Siobhan, thank you for making this video. Very helpful as usual. Question, when you are doing work with charcoal in your sketchbook, do you spray the work with fixative or do you just leave it as is? Also, do you spray your work that you do on larger newsprint drawings? Thanks again for doing these videos, I learn so much!
@Drawing-Life Жыл бұрын
Hi Rolf yes you definitely will need to spray charcoal drawings especially in your sketchbook, they'll get smudged as soon as you close up the book. For large drawings on newsprint, I'll spray if the drawing is worth keeping, otherwise i tend not to keep newsprint drawings that much, the paper itself doesn't hold up over time anyway.

Great explanation, love your style and what type of pencils or pens would you recommend to use?
@Drawing-Life3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! To be honest I just use regular ball point pens..... It really depends on the effect or result that you want.... I guess it's good to experiment and see what pen gives you the best marks for expression. I like cheap ball point pens because they seem to draw very fluidly, and you can actually get a range of dark and light marks depending on how you use them; I also like that every mark stays in the drawing, unlike pencil that you can erase etc... Hope this makes sense! thanks again for watching :)

Hi, I see that while you draw you hold the pencil in different ways, why do you do it? And what do you think is the best way to hold the pencil to draw in a loose and spontaneous way like you do? Thanks for the advice.
@Drawing-Life4 жыл бұрын
Hi Francesco! thanks for watching! Great question... i should have mentioned it in the video. I purposely hold it in different ways to make the marks more varied. I try to not have a single style of mark all the way through a drawing (if that makes sense?). Also another reason is if I hold the pencil the way i do when i'm writing, that can lead to a very controlled response, or to a very "outline" kind of drawing - again, hope this makes sense? So often I'll switch to holding it from the very end, purposefully to not have control. I think it's best to experiment with your drawing materials and the way you hold the pencil. There's no best way to hold the pencil, i don't think, but the best approach is to keep challenging yourself, right? :)
@francescobiancardi99224 жыл бұрын
yes, I think so too.

I first saw you on Skillshare and I love your style! I'm trying to do this on my drawing tablet. I'm just starting out so I was wondering if it helps to practice drawing the technical way first then loosen up later on or would it be better to just keep practicing and hope that the form will improve over time? I'm still getting my bearings on proportions.
@Drawing-Life4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Wow, that's great that you found me on Skillshare :) thanks for watching this video. My take on this would be to practice drawing with gesture first because it's a way to build up confidence in line work and expression. You can always layer on precision and technical details as you grow in your drawing style. Drawing basic shapes and symbols to break down the figure can help you to get a grasp on the proportions though, and for digital drawing, designing and animation that's often quite useful. The real key to unlocking your drawing though is observation, so for me gesture helps me to look at the pose or subject with more of a feeling sense than simply looking at basic shapes and forms. I would say, whatever way is more comfortable to you, focus on how you are looking at the subject. This will fast track you to getting proportions correct. The other thing I can recommend is to also keep a sketchbook as well as drawing digitally, and to draw from life if you can. Hope this helps, or answers somewhat of your question? Let me know! :)

Hi Vincent - yes, it's helpful to see the photos. I made a few videos where I do keep the photos on screen - but since they're not my images, I'm not sure about the copyright, so I need to find out if I can use them

Hello, just wanted to say I love your work. I just started and I can't seem to find the joy. It's either too dark, too small, or cartoony. Anatomy isn't a strong point for me and I also tend to draw the entire subject. I even paused a 1 min pose just to draw the whole thing. I'm really struggling

Hi, just know this is very common and we all tend to draw very controlled and tight at the beginning, and that's why the drawings don't look how we want them to. In order to free up a bit and find the expression in your work it really helps to not think about drawing "the figure" so much, and instead think about drawing the movement in the figure. It also helps to draw with continuous lines and allow your line work to move around the forms, instead of trying to draw the outlines. This may seem like "a trick" or "technique" but it leads you to understanding the process of drawing and once you are focused on the process more so than the outcome I think you'll start to engage with your joy in drawing. Anatomy will fall into place in time, but it's most important to just draw first and find your process that way. I really hope this helps - it's hard to answer fully in a comment, but hopefully this helps in some way - just let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you very much. I'll try to relax and approach it in a less controlled frame of mind. And I'll also try not to stare at any limbs that may turn out to be backwards that could break any non concentration.

How a normal sketch help in digital arts except work as a reference for tracing ?

I think it helps to improve your drawing skills overall. That way if you draw in digital software you'll be more confident.

UGH I wish one of these figure drawing videos would actually have REAL BEGINNERS help. Even professors at colleges just throw people into the 2 min. Very Very frustrating when you've never done it before.

Hi Kathryn, please check my recent video "How to Start Daily Gesture Drawing" , I explain how to draw 2 min poses; also I really recommend : Drawing 1 minute Gesture Poses, it explains the reason why you would even try to draw a pose in 1 or 2 minutes ( here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnSVkKOvj7mnpLc) One thought to consider: I think the reason we draw 1 minute poses, is to develop a way of expressing our response to a pose; so I can kind of see how professors might throw people into 1 or 2 min poses without much guidance, because the point is to figure out your response and how you draw based on that, and they can't be the ones to tell you how to do that, if that makes sense?? But I can also see how not knowing that can be frustrating from the outset. Hope this helps!! :)
