I've revisited some of the last week's videos plus there are a few extras.
Whiskey, Florentine and Hazel are obsessed with the blankets taken out of the old dudes' cage for a wash. They're sniffing and thumb boxing and playing with the blankets; clearly the brown one is the most aromatic and fascinating.
Flooffy faced Whiskers had an eye issue, but in Mandi's care he's doing well and she's fallen in love with the little guy. We love how, after his milk feed, that he runs his tongue on the roof of his mouth and wiggles his jaw sideways, savouring and appreciation the remnants of flavour in his mouth.
A curlew, Curly, fell into a pit at her work, so he was fished out and reunited with his family. Heartwarming to see. One of the guys sacrificed some of his lunch to give the little guy a feed.
Hector hoons around the aviary after a few days with his emotional support sloth; broken leg? Nah, just a scratch, nothing to stop Hector's mobility.
Mandi sees a koala on a fence post and watches when he scampers into the trees; the wild bull who hangs out in the forestry area came up to see Mandi, then decided to charge her; she says she's never been so grateful for a barbed wire fence.
Clips of the old dudes and new boy Puddles getting Mandi's special scratches and back massage, and a repeat of Otto the paralysis boy's bath footage.
Thanks Mandi for the footage which is given in thanks for the continuing donations which help support the fruit costs for her bats.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for Mandi.

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to Mandi
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for Mandi.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. If you specify the amount donated, it makes it heaps easier for Jenny to find the donation.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

Never would I minimize your struggles and the negative outcomes. Although I cannot watch those type of videos at the moment, I am re-watching a lot of the past videos. Hector is a baby and his leg will heal; the fracture is midshaft so he will probably be completely fine; it it was near a joint he'd get arthritis early in his life which may have affected his survival in the wild. Mandi seems to think he'll be just fine.

In the forestry preserve with the wild bull, it looks like some Western American Ponderosa Pines were planted. Stateside, they can grow 60 Metres or more, trunk diameters verging on 3 Metres. They grow all over the place in the mountains here in California, and elsewhere West of the Mississippi. Just as with "Wellingtonias"--we call 'em Giant Sequoias Stateside--once you have seen monarch-sized Ponderosas, you will not forget them. A broad pagoda-shaped crown. But their most impressive feature is their bark. Seen at a distance, the very mature trees have a very metallic appearance. Get closer, and you see that the boles sport these highly tan-to-scarlet alligator-hide-patterned plates, further subdivided into scales shaped like jigsaw puzzle pieces. Very impressive, craggy looking trees! I understand both Australia and New Zealand have several American coniferous imports, for your forestry industries, and recreational enjoyment. Douglas Fir, Lodgepole Pine, Monterey Pine, Coastal Redwood--Giant Sequoia's cousin, Ponderosa Pines, and Ponderosa Pine's close cousin, the Jeffrey Pine.

does mandi have bats in permanent care, or just long-term but still temporary care? if so, what determines when a bat gets to go to permanent care, since there probably is not enough place for all non-releasable bats?
@Megabattie
@Megabattie 13 күн бұрын
Mandi has about 20 permanent care bats; she has a licence for them. What determines permanent care is an unreleasable bat who is fairly tame, who has maybe known nothing but humans (hand raised babies), and who can go to education and school talks to be a bat ambassador. You also need a licence, you need to jump through hoops (space, enrichment, presence of other bats...). Our group doesn't do permanent care at all; it's not part of our licence. I have to say I actually agree with no permanent care for wild bats, but Mandi does it well and her old dudes have great accommodation, great enrichment, variety and social and emotional enrichment. Two sides to every coin. Oh - the bats also have to accept care and not be stressed by life in captivity. Some bats who are rehabbed and still unreleasable, never settle into care and are always "pacing" the cage when anyone comes in our out, trying to get out.

Any word on what could be causing the paralysis syndrome?
@Megabattie
@Megabattie 13 күн бұрын
No; it has been investigated but there is no firm causation found. Mandi has abut 10 paralysis bats now; they are very high maintenance.

Question, I assume that black and grey-headed flying foxes are two different species - do they often intermingle in the wild, or do they mostly keep to themselves? I noticed you had both in the aviary and was just curious.
@Megabattie
@Megabattie 7 күн бұрын
Yes, they're separate species; they hang out in mixed colonies where the territories overlap, and will be in the same trees but there are usually demarcations. However in care, the babies will play with each other; but if there are a group of blacks and a group of greys, they'll separate into colour groups. They smell different too.

@Megabattie
@Megabattie 14 күн бұрын
Hi Karen; Sorry, I don't take name suggestions from my viewers; I did once and it led to madness with the comments all demanding I name a bat after them, or their girlfriend, and then wanting daily updates on their bat; the comments were spammed with requests of varying degrees of entitledness, so I stopped accepting name suggestions and name them myself, and I like doing this. Mandi names her own bats as well and has no problem finding names.
@Megabattie
@Megabattie 14 күн бұрын
Welcome to Megabattie, I'm Meg I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions. I put up videos from Mandi and my rescue and care videos, so look to the title or description to figure out the context of the vids. Mandi doesn't rescue but she does a huge amount of rehabbing and has a lot of permanent care bats unable to be released for various reasons. She sends me the most amazing videos of her old retired bats in care; they've all got individual personalities and adorable quirks. Mandi lives 1200 kms away from me so I don't get to visit there often. I raise money for her on the videos. The rescue vids from my point of view are all mine, and if you hear me talking and see my hands in the videos doing bat care, then that's me too.

@@Megabattie Hi, thank you for your reply. I understand about naming the bats. That's ok. Besides, you give great names. I am new here so I am just finding my way around.

@@karentexas I'm always available to answer questions, but if I don't answer it might be because I don't get notified of comments on comments unless you're a public subscriber. So start a new thread if I don't reply. I also consider myself to be the naming queen; I consider my naming skill to be my one true superpower; I rarely use human names, but go a bit out there with weird names; Mandi also has a naming superpower; I mean, anyone who called a baby bat Captain Cornelius Spanglebottom is clearly exercising a superpower.
