Hi Kim! I’m sorry to hear about Hina’s allergies! I’m not a vet but want to share my experience. My poodle Hana had a a bad reaction to raw chicken. It caused her to have a terrible skin rash, itching and flaking requiring medication. I’ve switched to dehydrated human grade food from The Honest Kitchen. I rehydrate and add their stews. A minimal ingredient diet is a good place to start and slowly add more things to find the allergen. I have also eliminated scented shampoos for her dry skin and delicate nose. We like oatmeal soothing kinds. Regular oatmeal ground to powder and wrapped in tea towels is a great soothing bath, not only for my eczema but my dogs scratching as well. I just soak and squeeze them until the water looks milky. I try to bathe her just enough that her natural oils stay balanced. I don’t mean to offer unsolicited advice, but your suspicions about poultry may be correct. I want to offer some ideas that could help your girl find some relief! Aloe Vera directly from the plant is very soothing for itchy hot spots. I give Hana plain goat yoghurt in frozen kongs to help her gut microbiome each night. I call it ice cream and she loves it 😂

I was so close to visiting and working in Japan at one point. I'm a Motion Capture performer and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity. That would've been a real dream come true to visit South East Asia. Great video.

Our dog had the same problem when we got him. We ended up giving him a bath every week. Since then no more eyes scratching and pulling hair. We’re using dog oatmeal shampoo. We told his vet about giving him a bath every week and she said if that makes him feel better.
@kimdaovlog Жыл бұрын
That’s good to hear! Yeah our vet said it will make Hina feel a lot better if we gave her a bath every week. I didn’t know this as I always thought giving them frequent baths is not good for their skin. So far we’ve been giving her a bath once a week and I think I see improvement!

Hina is so well behaved.. a credit to your training! I hope you find a solution for her allergies. Haha, loved seeing the Woolies green bag on your shopping trip 👏🏻😘

Thank you! We worked really hard on her training as a puppy (she was a typical dramatic shiba) and it definitely paid off! It's so nice being able to take her out knowing she will behave (of course she gets lots of treats for it haha). I take the woolies bag every time I go shopping ahaha

I also find that my adhd leads to me being more disorganised. We get distracted and put things down rather than putting them away. So its good to have a set place or specifically themed containers where things always have a home
@kimdaovlog Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s me 😅 my place is so messy because I leave things around and never put it away. I’m trying to change that behaviour so I’ve tried to organise my house a bit more to motivate me to clean up

Hey Kim may I ask where Hina's Suitcase is from. Also if you have a video or post somewhere on Dog travel accessories (and everything else you love using and consider a must have) you recommend and use for Hina. If not I would love one, I'm a new puppy owner. I hope Hina gets better soon. Love you guys from Sydney 💕

A lot of Drs say chicken. We took our shiba off all poultry and tried fish or beef only. However, we just paid to have her allergy tested. NO food allergies only environmental! Literally allergic to planet earth. So we artificial turfed the backyard. She is so much better and gets regular baths. Allergy testing was worth it as guessing did not work.
@kimdaovlog Жыл бұрын
Ahh maybe it might be worth doing it. I’ll ask the vet the next time I visit. Hina is on salmon and beef right now and seems to be doing way better. We’ve been bathing her once a week as the vet suggested with special shampoo and I think it’s been helping. I also wipe her paws/face after her walk everyday too
@dbwatx931 Жыл бұрын
The allergy testing here in TX was $800 so you have a reference for cost. Hopefully, it’s cheaper in Tokyo. We found an actual allergist to do the testing. Only 2 in TX. We were lucky she was in our city. They were great.

I just came back from my tokyo trip! I loved it there! I do find it not very dog friendly, having 2 dogs at home makes me notice little things.... I noticed some parks do not allow dogs, also not many grass area out and about. it's really too bad cus tokyo is really amazing. I went to a huge dog park (although i didnt have my dogs with me hehe) wish there were more dog parks :)
@kimdaovlog Жыл бұрын
Ahh I think it depends, national parks don’t allow dogs which makes sense cos Australia is the same. In most parks they have a sign that has a dog and a cross through it so people assume it says no dogs, but underneath in Japanese it usually days “dogs must be on leash at all times” so just means no off leash dogs. Almost every park I’ve seen allows dogs!

At the restaurant for a moment I thought Hina and you were sharing a fork, lol! My internet says there are some commercial dog foods out there that don't contain chicken but I'm not sure the price or availablity in Japan. At least it tells you it's a common enough problem that there are products out there to help. I'm a Japan by Food subscriber, maybe I'll see you over there too (they need you to teach them why bad coffee is a necessity!). Cheers!
@kimdaovlog Жыл бұрын
haha they gave us another fork. There are commercial dog foods that don't have chicken but I prefer to make Hina's food from scratch so I know exactly what she is eating

Hey my dog has a allergy not just against chicken but also against poultry. So maybe it helps to remove all bird meat from the food. With my dog it makes no difference if we give him chicken or turkey or duck he is allergic to all of it. Maybe it helps and I hope she feels better soon.

Please be very careful with Apoquel. It carries a high risk of cancer with long term use. I know this is not something you want to hear because it is AMAZING for allergies but yea my dog was on it for 10 years and recently got diagnosed with prostate cancer which is extremely rare in neutered dogs. I looked it up and a lot of owners who had their dogs on apoquel long term had cancers develop in their dogs as well. I did not do chemotherapy (as the vert suggested) but found a therapy involving baking-soda. Duke is still alive 6 months since diagnosis (he should have passed away 5 moths ago). Unfortunately for his itching I kind of trained him not to scratch his face and I take him out often to different places which seems to help the itching. Your vet is supposed to do blood work every six months (mine did not mention any of this). I almost feel bad sharing this as the drug works like magic! But it is a reality. Best of luck also apoquel does not work on food allergies. So that is a kind of way of telling if you are dealing with an environmental or food allergy. Good luck.
@kimdaovlog Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’m aware of it not being good for long term so I want her off it. I didn’t know vets are supposed to do blood work every 6 months, I will ask the vet again when I visit next. Hina knows I don’t like her scratching her face hard and when she bites her paws. I’ve noticed she’s not doing it as much and her fur has grown back. I’m going to slowly give her less and less then eventually hopefully she can go off it completely. It sucks as it worked well for her but I don’t want her on it because of side effects. I’ve been doing things like bathing once a week with the shampoo/conditioner I got from the vet as well as wiping her paws after a walk and it seems to have helped

If your worried about chicken stay away from all of the birds. Go to a completely different protein. Also try washing her feet when you come back inside.

Maybe you should try not to let her eat turkey too, that’s consider like poultry, it’s like my baby fur..now she does not itch and also we give our dog cook food not raw…and that stop her itching…just saying…
