German fairy tales are just built different. My grandparents are from Kassel in germany, where the grimm brothers lived iirc, and when my brother and me were little, my grandma used to tell those old stories as good night stories. She also read christian andersen stories and 1001 nights, which iirc arent as bad as grimm. Also, the grimm brothers are the source of the term "grimdark", most grimm fairy tales fall sqarely into the grimdark genre.

Most original fairy tales are brutal old stories, often to scare kids into good behavior or just because storytellers thought they were more interesting.
