Even after the major fireball in 2020 Bahrain, Romain Grosjean said this : "Jules Bianchi saved my life, thanks to the halo. And I was absolutely against its introduction - what an idiot I was! Jules saved my life and the lives of other drivers, and I will always be grateful to him for that." I'm so glad that F1 motorsport is completely safe and innocuos after the safety improvement and car regulations.

I remember Leclerc's team radio on that day. Asking for updates and saying "please..." to himself in a weak voice. First his godfather, then someone who he considered as his brother passed away in crashes and now one of his best friends crashed in a fireball. I've felt so sorry for him.

Bianchi. We all know that’s the worst of the century. And it never should’ve happened. Safety car should’be been deployed after Sutil crashed… but it’s the FIA, and they don’t care. They still haven’t learned, and they never will do. Grosjean’s was the worst that wasn’t fatal. Me and my Nan were in utter disbelief and horror seeing that crash… and equal relief when we saw him climb out.

The Japanese race in 2014 should never have taken place, the fact that the helicopter was grounded meant that any driver, let alone Jules, would have had to be rushed through road traffic to the nearest hospital. The F.I.A. are to blame 100% for Jules’ death as they had to power to postpone or cancel the race but refused to do so as it would have cost them and the promoters a lot of money. Jules could have been a champion and been team mate to his Godson in Ferrari but that opportunity was taken from him by the FIA 😢

I'm a recent F1 fan, and had never seen the Bianchi accident before today. What the fuck. Who's idea was it to bring out what was essentially a 10 tonne lump of metal with bits jutting out at literal driver head height on a corner that had just been proved to be dangerous, in torrential slippery conditions, and KEEP THE RACE GOING!?? That's practically manslaughter in my eyes and I hope the FIA was held responsible for such a dumb fucking decision.

Every time I see Suzuka 2014, I get shivers down my spine. I remember watching that race live and waiting for every little news update. The news of his passing was a punch in the gut. VSC and halo would probably have saved him, but of course these changes are always coming in too late. Same for Bahrain 2020. Those 27 seconds before he got out felt like an eternity. Insane the Haas had split in half, but it only showed how much the safety has improved in F1. Let's hope we never have another Suzuka 2014

I remember it being mentioned on NASCAR in the 90s. The rolls and flips look dramatic and scary to onlookers, but usually the driver gets out relatively unscathed. However, the crashes where the car just hits the wall at a sharp angle and slides to a stop look remarkably tame since the car remains relatively intact, but the initial impact often severely injures or even kills the driver due to near-instant stopping time. In Bianchi's case, the crane tractor is a solid lump of steel... no cushioning or crumple zones at all to soften the impact.

A few things: Apart from one, I watched these crashes live, which isn't by any means a flex; I wish I had missed all of them. The marshals peeling the tyre barrier off of a car is always a gruesome sight. The introduction of the HANS device was a good move, as well as getting rid of refueling. Can't change my mind about the latter. I can't believe it took so long not to organize the Japanese GP during monsoon season. The halo needs no further explanation. Drive to Survive S02E06 was hard to watch. I really like how far safety in F1 has come since I started watching.

Grosjean's crash is the most undeniable proof that the safety measures put in place work and are worth it. Everything went wrong. He had a heavy crash nearly head-on into a barrier that was never meant to take on a head-on collision. And then a full tank of fuel ruptured and caught on fire. In 1990, he'd be dead 4 or 5 different ways. In 2000, he'd be dead from the head/neck injury, the barrier, and being unconscious in the fire. 2010, he might survive if the barrier didn't KO him. 2020: halo protects his head, crash structure protects his legs and arms, HANS protects his neck and kept him conscious, fire suit kept him from getting life-ending burns, and marshals are there fighting the fire in seconds. It's not just that he walked out. It's that there was still margin for him to survive despite so much going wrong. Two notes: Bianchi's crash is why Gasly was penalized and was still so livid at the organizers in Suzuka a few years ago; they had a recovery vehicle literally on track in the wet while he was catching up to the pack. In his shoes, I probably would have sued the track for it, then donated the money to a safety system that tracks recovery vehicles and alerts everyone if recovery vehicles are on track. And Spa needs to change. Radillon exists in such a way that cars bounce off of the walls back towards the track, on a corner where drivers commit un-sighted and the cars go light. We've seen so many horrific accidents where a car uses its entire crash structure in a wall impact, and then takes a second hard impact from another car. It's only a matter of time before someone dies there.

As tragic as Bianchi's death was, caused by a crash that never should've happened, it's scary to think that if it never happened, the Halo might've never been introduced which would've meant several drivers would be dead by now, including Leclerc, Hamilton, Verstappen, Zhou, and Grosjean. It should be kept in mind that the brain damage from repeated crashes is significant. The crashes are spectacular, and the fact that they're survival at all is impressive, but they're not benign. The spring that caused Massa's crash was survived, which is impressive only because an identical accident in F3 killed a driver.

I am so glad that Motorsports has become as safe as it has. The drivers I saw die live, of the top of my head: Dale Earnhardt, Dan Wheldon, Allan Simonsen, and Justin Wilson. None of them should have died, but thanks to the safety that motorsports has implemented across all leagues especially in the wake of their deaths, no one needs to die like them again. (I only learned of Jules' crash after the fact). Still, to this day, I don't like seeing major crashes. I don't like the thought of people getting seriously injured or killed because of some oversight in safety.

It might sound too harsh, but Jules' death is his own fault. The aim of double yellow flag is to inform drivers that there is a danger ahead of them. Also there is a very clear instruction that you should not drive at full speed under yellows. And he drove with so much speed that he lost control of the car (just reminding, under double yellows). So basically he ignored the yellow flag and received the worst punishment possible. Im not claiming that his mistake under double yellows is the only factor that caused the crash, but people somewhy forget that the actual cause of the crash was the violation of the rules that nowadays is awarded with 10 sec stop&go

burtis crash on spa, love that u used the german commentators for that clip since at that time someone as legendary as murray walker was commenting for the german translation. Name is Jacques Schulz for anyone curious.

Its crazy bcs even the smallest mishap today would have been assured death for the begining of f-1. And now people have their car disintegrate around them and crash into a wall at over 150 mph and usually walk out with a little boo boo (most of the time)

The tractor crane had to pull Sutil’s car out of the tire barrier. They can’t just leave it there for some other driver to ram into it.🤦🏻‍♂️
