it wasnt her mortgage, it was the parents mortgage and the house was in their names. She was paying for living in the house with the "promise" of getting the house after the mortgage was payed. It wasnt a good deal from the start that's for sure but it was more convinient for her.

You can still claim the house you need to simply show them the agreement papers despite the owner name and proof of payment like down payments and instalment every month it will take some time but it help you also the bank can't do anything until the court case is open and judge ordered them to sell it even then you can easily make a huge deal. As banks try to cuts of their losses.
