Rest assured, his Christian faith will be vastly more meaningful and compelling after, and because of what it cost him. That's the way it works. Things that don't cost us much, we take for granted and don't think that much of. Things that cost us dearly, that's what we value highly. Christianity has cost Americans precious little from the beginning of our history. You have to go back to the Pilgrims to find a high price being paid for the faith. Now, we may begin to get somewhere. I once told my congregation, in a sermon, that most churches would fare better financially, if they received in the offering plate what their people had spent on pizza in the preceding week. I still stand by that.
