This is my story, how I started woodworking and how I started using palletwood to earn money, build a side hustle and pay for an entire workshop. This video is full of palletwood furniture ideas and inspiration. The end of the video also has a no table saw straightening jig made from palletwood.

I'm an apprentice carpenter and one of the first things I noticed is the crazy amount of scrap wood and pallets. The store down the street from me has a few hundred pallets stacked in the back for their suppliers to pick up. I asked an employee about them and he said you can buy them at the customer service desk for $1 each. The store pays a $1 deposit on each pallet, and the supplier buys them back for $1. Most of their pallets are fairly new and in good shape, also having hundreds of pallets to pick through makes it nice.

As disabled/chronically ill young adult I've been looking at things I could do to still earn just a Lil more then my government issued budget. This is what I've been saying. I started in woodworking exactly like this except, I got friends to pay a deposit to get pallet wood auxiliary furniture (chests and shoe racks). I used the deposit money to buy a circular saw and glue. I already had a drill. Good God is took a long time breaking down pallets and I saw no money for a long time because I needed to use every cent to buy the tools needed for the next job. But the stuff was nicer and nicer and I got faster and faster (and better). I don't do it full time so I had to let people know up front that it'll take a while but they'll get a good deal because the furniture will be made of solid wood instead of the cheap nasty stuff available at the local stores Now I make smalls as a legit side hustle in my backyard. Fyi, I bought my circular saw (first tool) 2 years ago. Thanks for the video and the encouragement to stick with it.

Sounds like a new channel name… I kind when the opposite direction, having some tools from my construction job, then getting into pallet and other free wood just to challenge my design skills. I think I learned more about how to prep wood more from pallets than any other wood. Gotta try not to make my stuff too hobbit themed (hobbiton ?) is a good challenge.

Amazing. We love this approach, those of us who started businesses. Build as you go versus big loans. I once started a landscaping company with a lawnmower I pulled out of a dumpster, and a trimmer and blower I bought on time. I traded up on equipment a dozen times over the next 3 years, and tripled my income every year. On my 3rd year, my landscape installation and maintenance business was the 5th largest in the capital city of the state I worked in. I started a number of other businesses in other cities and states. And this, while working full time for the government. I sold the businesses in the early 1990's, and retired from business ownership for 6 years before returning on some levels. It can be done. I'm old and retired, and this video is inspiring me to start over again. Start small. I have a friend who is full blood Cherokee Indian in northern Georgia. He owns several businesses. One of them is taking a Dremel drill and making hummingbirds out of small scrap blocks of wood. He makes them, stains them, and outs them up for sale when he reaches 1,000 of them in less than a month. Then he ships them out, usually all to the same person, who pays him $5000. Every month. It literally takes him 45 seconds to make one. I watched him do it firsthand. Just keep looking for your niche. It's best to build as you go. Cuz then your floor is stable under you. Loans? Don't recommend them.

Great video Mark. I love the way you're helping people interested in woodworking dive in and not doubt themselves just because they only own a few basic tools. I started out like this years ago with a secondhand drop saw and some basic hand tools. People laughed at me and the things I made. I remember the words "People aren't going to buy that shit" being spoken at me like I was a joke. I'm glad I didn't listen to that person and the numerous other put downs. Today I own well over a hundred thousand dollars worth of machinery, and this "hobby" is now a very successful business. I love what I do, and it never feels like I'm actually 'working' for a living. You gave me the inspiration to start a side hustle in pallet wood furniture. I am a landscaper and over the years have thrown away so many good pieces of wood and noticed the local timber merchant had trouble getting rid of the pallets. So I bought a thicknesser the other day for about 180 quid and it works great. I have made a table saw out of an old skill saw and I have now clamped up my first set of boards. I love that despite clearly having learned a lot and completing some great projects you are still humble and don't look down on the beginner. Thank you for that!✌

If you ever do a fence repair/replacement job, save those fence pickets, 2x4s, & 4x4s. We just replaced our fence last yr, & I saved all the wood. I built a rolling spice rack for between my fridge/cabinets outta the sanded pickets, & have many other wonderful ideas for the rest. I'm so inspired! Sometimes you can also find free wood/reclaimed wood from jobsites or remodels that is pretty amazing, but you might have some that's unusable too. The great thing about wood... it burns, so you don't have to pay to dispose of it just get a li'l fire pit & voilá~ all cleaned up!

If you start something new, the best way is to invest time instead of money (just like joggers that start buying runner clothes but never really go running). If you STILL like what you're doing, then it's the right thing for you. Reinvest the money you made into better equipment and there you go.

One very important note for EVERYONE: Wherever you get the wooden skids, honestly find out who bought the material that was on the skids and ASK PERMISSION from the right person, because in many cases, they paid deposit money (usually $25 or more) for each and are just waiting for the vendor to take them back and refund their money. In some cases, they did not pay for them and the vendor won't come and get them, so then the owner will be glad to allow you to take them away. ASK PERMISSION FOR SKIDS.

yeah round my parts the free ones are usually outside a fence line and have a bit of cardboard zip tied to the fence saying "fREe". if it looks like it's on the property and there's no sign, then it's a 'leave it alone' or 'ask' situation. usually if it's stacked up real nice and pretty it's obviously a 'leave it alone' situation haha

You also want to know how that pallet was treated, whether it was merely heat treated or if it's been chemically treated. You also want to know what was carried on that pallet, and where it's been. Chemicals, bacteria, mold, excrement, cooties, eldrich curses or smelling like toner cartridges can really ruin a project.

as one who made pallets for a living - I was at my company for 16 years but had to leave because of chronic illness caused pain so bad that i simply could not stand up to do a day's work, as a former pallet maker i am intrigued. well done sir the start of what you did was my job in reverse - which i had to do from time to time if a mistake was made requiring disassembly of the thing or if damaged boards had to be removed to be replaced as part of repairing pallets as for the rest that you do, i am impressed i was proud of that job but only got 16 years at and now i am retired, at age 65

True story! Like Jesper said, In my village of 3000 people, there used to be like 5 carpenters for the past 20 years(and here in my country the houses have been made from stone, and now from bricks and concrete, the furniture is soviet, so, chipboard in everything... you need a carpenter only for roof, windows, doors,aaaand some times for furniture). Now there is just one, and he is only making custom chipboard furniture... That"s a guy having all the tools in his workshop(like a 100k in machinery and tools) already there from his grandfather... But the passion is not there... I just started making things from pallet wood, and already from friends I have like orders for so many things, that they are ready to pay(like things seen on pinterest), but nobody wants to make... I learned so much from guys like you. Made my firrst 3 meters desktop out of pallet wood... with having the knowlidge, and different technics from videos... my father used to have the woodworking as a hobby, he just watched and giving me advises that I already knew from this kind of videos(he is 67), he ask me about you tube then 😀... I had the bad habbit of doing nothing in my free time, just drinkig and wasting my time on stupid games on my phone or watching "funny" videos all day long. That changed , my dayly routine changed. Thank you! Thaaaank you and all the people there that changed my life in the past 2 years! By the way, I just had my first workshop made from zero. That is amazing! I understand starting your workshop from nothing. My grandfather sold all his workshop equipment when him and my grandmother moved into a smaller house. I was heartbroken, but too young to have my own workshop then. Luckily, there are plenty of high quality old tools being sold at garage sales, car boot sales, and Facebook, often for very little.

When I saw this, remember my grandfather start something like this in the 70s - He start from almost nothing and using this kind of free wood pallets, and survive almost 10 years until get a full time job in the middle 80, sometimes it's not about have 30.000k woodworking place, it's about be smart and be pacience.

I have built my chicken house out of pallets. I am currently building other chicken stuff with pallets. I figured out myself how to disasemble pallets and remove nails, but i see in this video that there are lots of efficient techniques ... Pallet parts are not always well shaped but they are often made out of hard woods and withstand well outdoor conditions. This is great to learn wood working while making durable and good quality stuff.

$30,000 of tools is not the issue, it's the truck to pick up pallets (plus the ability to drive of course), and the huge shed (or other free space) to store and work on them.

I’m amazed places weren’t securing their pallets and calling cops on someone stealing pallets. Every retailer I worked at would have a collector come for them to be reused. Had a couple people get fired for leaving them unsecured or selling them off.

Great video and hobby. If possible, know the history of your pallets. Heat treated is better than chemicals like Methyl Bromide. Pallets may be stamped HT or MB. Obviously, go for the former. Avoid pallets used to transport chemicals or other materials that can introduce anything hazardous into the wood. Take precautions to avoid inhaling the dust. Finally, avoid burning pallet wood if there’s a chance you may inhale the smoke.

i love this video! cheap hand tools, salvaged wood, large gaps in my joints, and lots of elbow grease are how i made my first projects 15 years ago. bought shop tools bit by bit over the years and my accuracy and workflow improved bit by bit too. i've been (mostly) following the guideline my mentor passed on to me: no more than one new tool per project.

Great video. I think the comment at the beginning is valid criticism, some of these channels forget where they came from or had the money to start with all of that but still claim DIY. Kinda like how TV chefs do "home cooking" but have ingredients, tools, and recipes far outside of your average household would use on a weekday night. Ask permission and make sure to check if the wood is treated. If they are chemically treated it might leak or off-gas over time. There is a possibility it might react to some finishes you might add, check everything out, but pallets are a fantastic source of wood and helps cut down on landfills.

Pallets are so sought after in my local area so I spent the bank holiday weekend breaking down rustic coffee tables and building some up for people.

Scaffolding wood is also a godsend if you want even thicker planks, I made my very first piece of furniture using scaffolding and pallet wood and very basic skills and tools. I haven't started a business yet, it's still a hobby, but I definitely want to educate myself officially as a trade. I've been planning on making a deal with some construction companies for rejected scaffolding wood and thrift stores for broken down wooden furniture you can make some beautiful stuff with that. I worked in a thrift store and you wouldn't believe how much hardwood tables, chairs and shelves they just throw away, even oak furniture. I'm having a wonderful time restoring and building things with the limited materials and tools that I currently have.

I'm wicked jealous. My dad was a carpenter, his whole life, and trained me at a young age. Unfortunately, I did not live with him, and I never had access to the space required to do stuff myself... I've never, in my entire 30+ year life been in a living situation where I could have a workspace. All I can do is watch people on KZbin do what I wish I could.

I've known people work their way out of the 'dole-drums', increase their skills, and start small businesses by using this method. Used pallets have become an upcycling industry. I'd encourage young people to give it a try.

I'd like to mention that that some pallets that are shipped from foreign countries will use their locally available exotic hardwoods to build pallets with. I just recovered a pallet constructed from mahogany. I've come across ones made from oak a number times as well. You can end up with really nice wood for nothing!

I have fallen on hard times. Ive done a bit of carpentry in the past, but no real finish work, i worked granite and marblebtops as well, so i understand what wood work will hold a load. Ive spent the past couple of days looking at pallets in the back of my place, thinking, i dont want that wood to be pure waste. So i looked up pallet wood projects, and i found this. I think im going to switch from kitchens to wood working for myself.

Another great video Mark, pallets are the way to go when first starting out. As you mentioned, stuff it up, just go find another one. I made lots of craft items from pallets and sold them at the market, it was simple and people loved them. Might make some more for the upcoming summer season. Keep up the great work. Cheers Robert.

I’m just starting this pallet woodworking adventure myself, got two more today. What I’m wondering is do you have to worry about different wood treatment for pallets. I’m getting heat treated wood. I want non toxic wood because I’m building a compost bin. I’ve noticed they are brittle, should I avoid heat treated wood for building furniture or does it not matter?

I did exactly this. I built pallet furniture and made a business and income from it. In the end, I went to the pallet suppliers and had them build the foundations for it in bulk. I would plant a tree for each piece sold, and give them a native as a gift to plant themselves. The problem however was raw sawn pine has a 6-10% shrinkage. Mind you, I made a decent income and invested all my money into crypto. Now I am mostly set for life. I own a magical home in Australia and have expanded into other business ventures. All thanks to making pallets out of reclaimed wood.

When Covid started everything being out of stock I started buying old/used tables and desks for very cheap or even free and then I would restore and refurbish them and make them new again. It’s made me thousands so far served around 4000 customers but it definitely has slowed down a bit. I would like to start building my own stuff now there’s a lot of free pallets I can get around my city so hopefully I can start that too. I have the drill, sander, jigsaw and circular saw. Might have to get couple more tools but I don’t mind as this is something I’m really considering. Kinda nervous to start tho I just hope I can pull it off thanks for the video.
