I wonder if the show's writers wanted a more narrative based show, but the sponsor's wanted lots of fights to help drive toy sales.

YES SOME DAIRUGGER APPRECIATION!!! Thank you so much for being fair in your review. Lot of people just dunk on it without giving it a proper chance. It's very underrated. DaiRugger has been my special interest for years and I'm so glad that it's getting attention. Sometimes I dream about the story being rebooted into something that wasn't bound to the formula and toy sales. Two of the best episodes of DaiRugger had little to no action scenes and instead focused on the characters: episode 11 with the Rugger Team helping an enemy fighter pilot and episode 13 that centered around Ise and him grappling with his own cynicism and "the enemy within his heart". And I wish there was more of that but alas. Anyway, again, many thanks from the very small community of DaiRugger fans :)

thanks! i'm fairly inexperienced with SR anime, but this opens my eyes to others that I've overlooked. Hopefully I have time for them this year

Katsushi Murakami who designed the robot is one of my favorite mecha designers, he designed most of my favorite robots for anime and Tokusatsu

Just subscribed. Thanks for covering the older anime. I vaguely remember Vehicle Voltron's story. Looks like I need to watch the original Dairugger.

thanks! I do a lot of different kinds of anime, just however i feel at the moment. But yea watch Dairugger, they removed a bit of the violence and altered scenes, though I don't think it's as dramatic of an alteration as Voltron and Golion though

So it doesn't have the same basic episodic format that early to mid 1970's super robot shows had? The freaken cover man just spells "GENERIC" on every level. I can understand why so many probably passed this one up because it looks like one of the early 1970's classic super robot series which was there for the purpose of selling toys and pretty much nothing else, devoid of an actual plot. Especially considering when this came out, in favor of higher quality real mecha series like Macross, Xabungle, and Dagram. But I think you changed my mind. Never judge a book by its cover i guess.

yea it's no macross, but it's totally worth a shot

I used to own this on DVD and was one of the lucky ones to get the last volume since Media Blasters' Voltron sub-license had expired (or was very close to it) before that set came out so there were very limited copies. Bought it due to the Voltron connection since I used to watch that when it was on Toonami in 97 (though I don't recall them airing Vehicle Voltron, I learned about that one over a decade later) and already owned the three Golion sets which I liked and well, Dairugger wasn't as good. As a matter of fact, I thought most of it was boring up until the final set when it started to get good. I'm very curious about Albegas which Discotek announced a few weeks back since that was apparently supposed to be brought over as a third Voltron series but was cancelled when Vehicle Voltron flopped.

Kozo Morishita directed both Dairugger and eventually the first G1 Transformers series 😂
@bobsamurai9 ай бұрын
there's probably a lot of staff similarities, the background art and music really reminded me of g1 transformers

I don't even hate Vehicle Voltron. Shades of grey villains weren't a thing in the 80s, so having Hazar being a noble villain was something fresh.

Is this the original Japanese version of what later became voltron?
@bobsamurai9 ай бұрын
Vehicle voltron. They took clips from this and added it to the Golion anime so that’s why Galaxy Garrison sounds familiar. I reviewed Golion recently if you’re interested in the original Voltron

I watched Dairugger XV and it's legit good, it has a interesting story, and compared it to Vehicle Voltron, the differences are massive. In Dairugger, the Galvestons are war hungry, yes, but only because they want to find a new world to live in and use extreme force to get what they want, for the most part they are prideful and morally grey. In Vehicle Voltron, they're straight up sociopaths who want to conquer the universe and are slave drivers, Hazar was like that too before he realized he didn't like fighting all that much, plus he realized that his planet was dying.
@kappapride63323 ай бұрын
Yes yes! But I would also suggest that there's a lot to Galveston society that produces this kind of thinking that most of the officers have. Because, yes, their planet was dying, but so many of the officers in the show are either against the war with the Rugger Guard but powerless to stop it, or they're so blinded by the imperialism they genuinely believe what they're doing is right. And all of them are conditioned to believe that their lives are worth nothing. Sim, Barataria, Drake. They died believing their lives don't matter. Only their pride as a Galveston soldier matters. And then there are those in power, living in luxury while the people are dying. On the battlefield, and on their own dying planet. War is how they make a profit. They say so themselves. And I'm not even mentioning their involvement with the Eldorans. Galveston was a corrupt state long before they realised their planet was dying. There's so much more I could say but this comment is long enough already I'm so sorry.

Dairugger XV is better than Golion because it has a better plot, both protagonists and antagonists were morally ambiguous and solid ending.
