Episode 10: Western Comic Videos have BEGUN
Honestly felt great to get this video out into the world, I really do believe there are thematic parallels to Berserk in Hellboy. I avoided saying WHAT Scott Allie did because the incident has been covered extensively and focused on the main content of the book. Also, I do apologize for the AMOUNT of spoilers there are, but I always spoil things so whoops.
See y'all in the next video!

So to, in essence, wrap up this short little thread; i just finished the main series. It was pretty damn good. Seed of Destruction was a hard read, took me a bit to get into it and i kept getting distracted by other matters (mostly my fault) but when starting Strange Places i was immediately sucked in, finishing it in about 2 days and then moving directly onto The Wild Hunt- finished in 1, and a few hours ago i began Hellboy in Hell and just now finished it. A little rocky at first (by my own hand) but was held pretty tightly until the final omnibus. I know theres more and I read out of order due the one shots and short stories inbetween Strange Places and The Wild Hunt- hell the reason I started reading Hellboy (Hellboy In Mexico) wasn’t even in the omnibus set (go figure haha) along with The Devil You Know but i doubt ill find a time where i do go back and find/read those to understand the rest of the story, because for now im damn satisfied with the story i read- at least the parts of it i did. TLDR: it was great, but there was no hellboy in mexico

I’ve met Mike Mignola once. The man is a steel trap when it comes to expanding on his method of writing and creating stories based on very niche and little known mythology. Not to mention the way he connects it all is brilliant. But inherently all I got was Hellboy’s personality is based on his dad. It’s probably the stoicism of the era, honestly my grandpa’s personality is pretty similar to hellboy so I can see it.

Hellboy is less of a reluctant hero and more of a Gothic Detective. He may look down on all the Demon Shenanigans and be tired of all their shit. But he cares as any willing messiah would. way less individualistic and very low flawdness compared to Guts.

@@phantom3146 Yes, you will notice that in gritty, dark stories, most writers go for very flawed and individualistic characters. But I feel that Hellboy doesn't have a singular flaw or groups of defects that would place him on the same level as characters like Guts or The Dad from Heavy Rain, to give you the first example that comes to mind. He is a hero through and through. Even if it looks like he is reluctant to accept his "destiny," he is not reluctant to put others before him.

@@jellyface401 ah I catch your drift , I like Berserks dark themes though because it feels like a by product of the main characters ambitions and choices . When I think of a “hero” it’s kinda hard not to think about the more traditional hero in a costume “it’s my duty to protect the innocent and save the world” kinda character. And Hellboy does literally all of that… but for me it was more Heroic to see an extremely reserved and sad man save himself from his own horrible circumstance and never dragging anyone down with him because of it. That’s a very nice way to look at a hero

What I personally love about Hellboy, is how he is effortlessly badass, and also completly lame, in such an endearing way. In a vaccum, a gunsling demon detective who sawed off his own horns and fights monsters on the regular is such a cool concept, but then you hear him say the corniest one-liners, like he _wants_ to sound badass. It grounds him in a really nice way. I also love how *nice* he is: he's a bit grumpy and quite stoic, sure, but from the first comic you see how much he cares for other people, how he chooses to be good in spite of his fate (and how much it fucks him over). He's also good with kids, quite patient, and barely curses, which you don't expect from a guy with his looks. Mike Mignola could have so easily gone with the "badass male power fantasy that treats everyone like shit" trope, but instead he made one of my favorite comic characters.

Graphic fiction as a whole really has tons of value and I think its a shame it doesn't have as much casual appreciation as it deserves.

A lot of that has to do with the way the market has changed over the course of the past 30 years. I don't think the current comic market in North America could handle a return to newsstands or the like given their inherent niche. I'm gonna do an essay or something about this exact problem someday, but I do agree it's quite a shame.

I feel like Hellboy breaks so many molds. From it's abstract presentation in art to how Hellboy interacts with the world around him. It's a one of a kind series in my opinion and one that should have a light casted on it more often. Lots of people were disappointed by the last film, but at least we got two good ones, two solid animated films, and a great TV pilot of Screw On Head. Hellboy sadly has never enjoyed a good video game outing. Despite the material offering plenty of potential for a great video game adaptation. Unfortunately, the gaming world has not show any interest in adapting Hellboy. A shame since the game could be a tapestry of exploration, unique character/world interactions, and unique combat.

Hellboy changed me as a person for the better, and helped me through the pandemic and the passing of my dad a year ago.The character of Hellboy inspired me to stay strong in these troubling times. It’s one of the best stories ever told, let alone among American comic books, where it’s typical to maintain the status quo and completely undo any changes made to the characters and lore. Hellboy is amazing because the story is allowed to progress and Hellboy himself turns corners of character progression and is never reset. Those are the same things that attracted me to Invincible and they’re the things that separate the masterworks in comics from the politicized, vapid corporate schlock Marvel and DC are pushing out. It makes me happy to see this book getting some more attention. Thank you for making this video.

The last part was powerful. ‘Holding on to Berserk because we never knew the ending.” I was never into anime that much but Berserk was amazing. It taught me that even though the world is full of so many snakes and monsters - we can beat every last one of them down into submission. I sometimes even think that all of this fight happen internally with our thoughts. We fight of so many bad thoughts that are toxic to us. We should fight them off one by one without mercy until we are happy with life. No matter how dark it can be - be thankful of the simplest things. As simple as being able to breath with our nose or even being able to taste how sweet a mango fruit can be. That is the ultimate emotional strength. It got me emotional sometimes. I didn’t know anime could be this deep. I want to watch more and I did. I found anime amazing.

In the early 2000s I first read “The Chained Coffin and Others” and I always tell folks to start there. The stories are perfect for setting up HB’s character and how he exists as only a part of that weird paranormal world. Also, The Wolves of Saint August is some of Mignola’s best art/writing. It makes reading his origin later even more engaging because you are now more invested into the character and world. Furthermore, Lobster Johnson rules.

Hellboy pretty became a major part of my life five years ago and I'm still collecting. Then in 2020, I read through Berserk and made some connections between the 2 fictional characters I love the most, good to know I wasn't the only one lol. As someone who has made a video essay about Hellboy's mythological journey, I truly loved this, nice work dude :).

I'll be honest, I was wary fo the clickbaity title because the experience of reading Berserk and Hellboy was so different. I was expecting some spiel about "BOTH ARE STOIC BADASSES BEATING MONSTERS WITH A DARK ARTSTYLE", but the fact that you tied their similarities to the narratives is actually quite engaging. More Hellboy readers is always good!

Odd enough, I never read American comics - discovered manga in 1999, and then moved to Tokyo in 2005 and became a manga apprentice for Fist of the North Star creator, Tetsuo Hara. While I worked there, I got a bit sick of manga as it had become my life - so when one day I walked into a shop that carried comics from the USA, the cover of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction called to me. I bought it and took it home .... soon after I returned and bought ALL of the Hellboy & B.P.R.D. comics, and action figures that the shop had to offer. Still one of my all time favorite series. Great video dude.

So having never read Berserk, I'm not sure of the comparisons. But HellBoy is a masterpiece. Wasn't aware of all the controversy surrounding the editor. I managed to read the story in chunks with the trades and now I'm finding there's a lot of HellBoy outside of the main story arc for me to read which again I'm acquiring in chunks. My favorite story arc so far is "Darkness Calls". That whole thing with the Baba Yaga, Koschei the Deathless and Vasilisa is epic on a level few stories achieve. It's making me want to delve deeper into Russian folklore and read the original versions of these characters.

I can see several parallels on berserk with some western comics (art/script) like Prince Valiant, the Roy Thomas/John Buscema long run on Conan, Alfredo Alcala's Voltar and specially Elric by Michael Moorcock's (Stormbringer, Melniboné and the way that society works just to point two examples). Of course they're both forerunners of sword and sorcery/dark fantasy genre as a whole so obviously everyone after them will have some percent of influence, even Tolkien read Conan, but never on hellboy. What always bringed me to Mignola's work was his huge research on folklore from everywhere. Really nice video

I would strongly recommend the BPRD series after finishing Hellboy in Hell (that's the best way to read them for the first time imo). It starts halfway through Strange Places and ends after Hellboy in Hell; so 2 and a half books of Hellboy is equivalent to 9 books of BPRD. The writing is a lot better and the characters have some really good arcs, the plot genuinely changes them, not just physically but emotionally. We see them cross lines, develop hatred and fear for once known allies and each lose something. Hellboy just focuses on one character really, but the BPRD introduces a whole team of them, where even the minor characters develop and change, with some new characters that MM didn't directly create accounting for some of the best in the series.

When People say Manga are Better than Comics, it Sounds more like an Insult of yourself. You can't Compare them. Because if there are Good Manga's, then there are Good Comics as well. If Manga has The Best Stories such as Berzerk, that doesn't mean that Comics are complete BS. There are a lot of things that make them diffrent. Diffrent Concepts, Habits etc. Like there's no Fight between Comics or Manga. Because if a Person would read only Comics and They'd hate Manga, The Manga only Manga readers would say pretty much the same about Comics.

Hellboy's reluctance to take the clear path to do whatever he wants really sets him apart and character development. This definitely has some shonen parallels. The religious / occult aspects and comedic dark mood of hellboy remind me of chainsawman, and hellboy's episodic wandering from place to place nature remind of BLAME! Hellboy. Hellboy is one of the greatest panelled works across all genres and mediums. highly recommend it to anyone interested in comics, manga etc etc

Nah i think America's Berserk would be Mike Mignola's Baltimore: The story of a skilled monster slaying amputee forever cursed to fight dark monstrosities and hunt a guy with giant Bat wings in a dark and grim world where ancient horrors and monsters awaken more and more everyday like a giant snake guy and militant religious organizations who themselves see our main character as a monster himself hunt him down, lots of innocent people who help him die and he finds himself being just as vicious as the monsters he hunts.

@@monsterdrinkingtax2072 Indeed, the first two or three volumes retells some of the stuff in the novel, but with more focus on Baltimore than his companions, and I think that is ultimately something that hurt those later volumes even more since the companions, both those original ones and some new ones get increased prominence, but with very little backstory. In the novels three of his companions that have never met each other before meet in a bar, waiting for Baltimore to arrive they each tell their stories of how they came into contact with the man. You thus get to know them as intimately as Baltimore himself.

The only Manga I have ever desired to and gone out of my way to read was Berserk and similarly the only Comic being Hellboy. Berserk was for it's story and because of it's influence and all the usual reasons people hype the hell out of it. Reading it for the art was secondary, I only found out it's art was top notch quite a while after I had learned through cultural osmosis how great the rest of it was. Hellboy however was purely for aesthetic reasons, I always liked Hellboys design and I loved Mike's artstyle, aside from cool demon man hunts mythological monsters and occult stuff as a paranormal government agent I kinda knew nothing going in so it's fun to see the two compared here despite me seeking them out for different reasons.
