Daisy Rickman - Signpost To The Stars

Signpost To The Stars is a song I wrote for my Grandmother Barbara J Rickman. It is about the celestial realm and a song for all those longing to be up in the stars with loved ones who have passed.
Out of all the songs I recorded on Howl this one was the hardest to get a take for that I felt content with.. and I’m still not 100% happy with this final version. But I realised that with some songs and ideas you are trying to manifest into physical reality it’s never going to be perfect and always different to how it feels playing the song live. I would like to record a version one day with more instrumentation but wanted to keep this one just me and my guitar.
During the 2021 lockdown whilst living in my Grandmothers house after she passed away there were often times I would feel her presence close in the house and especially whilst writing and recording music. I feel that her spirit guided me a lot during that time and throughout the creation of Howl. One morning whilst missing her a lot I was sat in the kitchen playing my guitar and had been reading an old book of hers about stars and the different constellations titles ‘Signpost the the Stars’. I spent the whole day sat with my guitar writing about loved ones, the stars, constellations, and what it might feel like when we turn to dust and get to roam up in the sky with the stars and those who are no longer with us in the physical world. I find it quite hard writing songs and is really rare for me that something comes down from the ether so quickly like this.. though it felt like she was there with me that day and helped bring this song into the physical world.
Whilst living there it was very special to be close to her presence spiritually and creatively, and I feel like a lot of the work I created was guided in many ways by her and the love we share for one and other. Grief is a powerful force within processing the loss of loved ones. It can be really hard.. but I think from this process can come transformational and beautiful things. I hope listening to this song can help anyone experiencing this in some way help you feel what you need to feel.

@@lilyfenprice3822 I figured it out! I am eternally grateful to myself 😅🙏 It’s in drop D - DADGBE Capo on 2nd fret. E7: 0 5 7 6 7 0 D: 5 7 7 0 0 0 B: 2 4 4 0 0 0 A: X 0 2 2 2 0 It just loops that. For the strumming/picking, watch Daisy’s cover of Who Knows Where The Time Goes. It uses the same technique but needs to be adjusted for this song. I think once you’ve got the technique it’s quite easy to figure out to find that beautiful rhythm she plays ❤️
