This is a great video on the causes and ways to deal with BER. So much hype and "hacks" get talked about in videos, but you keep it focused on the real root causes and the ways to mitigate the issue. Great job!

Great information! I just took out some San Marzano and Roma tomatoes due to end rot, they are the first batch and 1/2 are all green with end rot. I think the cause is my plants grew too fast. My watering is consistent and the soil has adequate moisture. I have planter box's and combined potting mix and raised bed mix. Prior to planting the tomatoes I mixed Dr. Earth vegetable fertilizer and Osmocote fertilizer in to the soil and the plants grew too fast. Some plants are at 6-7 feet tall and I planted the plants not even 3 months ago.

Nice review of bottom end rot. It takes decades for whole egg shells to decompose into microscopic particles that can be absorbed by plant roots. Robert Plavis, who has written many gardening books, buried eggs shells and dig them up every year for five years. At the end of five years they still looked the same.

Living in the Sacramento valley, you and I never ever need to artificially stress our plants - they’re automatically stressed due to our crazy temp changes in late spring. Honestly if I stressed my plants purposefully they’d just give up entirely and die. 😂 For us, steady wins the race!
@DaisyCreekFarms3 жыл бұрын
lol true, sometimes tomatoes keep producing more leaves and won't flower, in that case letting the soil dry up for a bit in-between watering encourages flowering and fruit set.

This is happening to my Floridade tomatos. It was raining a lot and got very dry. My mom came over when I was transplanting them into big containers. She put way to much compost in the pots in half the plants. The ones where she did not over compost have good tomatos.

Plant genetics plays a part in BER as well. The only time I get BER is growing from seed. There's almost always one plant that gets it, even though all the plants are in the same bed, getting the same amounts of water and nutrients. It's not a common problem but it does happen.

Hello I have a question. We have alot of lime in our drinking water. I see it in my shower and kitchen appliances. Since I have not yet setup a good rain water saving system I use drinkwater to water my tomatoes. Do the tomatoes take the lime from my drinkwater and would it be sufficient enough. Haven’t seen any rot yet

there are sun shades for plants that let sunlight through but with less intensity, you'll just have to buy the materials for framing the shade in a good spot or tying it

Is milk has fast effectivity same with gypsum or lime? Thanks
@robertshorthill41533 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jag, my wife thinks that gypsum should only be used for clay soils which we do not have. I blended my tom soil from used soil that was semi-depleated from last year, composts from a couple sources, as well as my own, slow release fertilizer, (4-6-3) and (18-18-21), worm castings, bone meal, maybe ground banana skins dried and crushed to powder, etc. I fear BER will occur as my bigger fruits ripen. I keep thinking a slurry of gypsum will prevent this in a few weeks. It's been very hot and dry here in Montana and I water a good bit almost every day. My tom pots drain well, so I don't think I have soggy mud near the bottom. I picked about 12 or 14 small fruits with BER last week and after all my efforts would be rather disappointed to see more on larger fruits coming ripe in 4 to 6 weeks. Thanks for your information on calcium sources and uses. Bob in Montana.

My problem with blossom end rot is with my squash. I know everyone says it most likely a pollination problem. NOT this TIME... Large number of the fruit never make it to the blooming stage... Before turning yellow and falling off, fruit not maturing, blooming prematurely, not fully blooming & staying open for days. I have 4 mature zucchini, 2 straight yellow, I have 1 yellow quash for all season, like 3 zucchini all very small. I am using rabbit & chicken poop to fertilizers. Till 2 days ago I picked up some mater magic, while in town it was the only product I could find with calcuim in it. I thought it may have been I was not watering enough, every other day. So I stepped it up, helped very little. I have taken pictures and couple videos of my plants. In hopes someone will be able to tell me what I am doing wrong. I am trying to grow food for us to eat, we could use it. Getting tired of PB&J, glad tobhave it, but would really be nice to have something good.
@hands2hearts-seeds2feedamu833 жыл бұрын
@Daisy, any HELP would be greatly appreciated. I understand time is valuable. I am hoping the calcuim from the mater magic will be enough, but is only 4%. I grew my squash last year in buckets using store bought soil. They still didn't grow very well but I didnt have B.E.R. had bugs... Been trying to deal with them also... On EVERYTHING
