Thanks Greg! Cool channel, so glad I found it. I’m in GA, hot stuff down here. I’m in a jam as a beginner, but learning every day!💯🤷🏽♂️😂

Glad it helped. I’m in South Alabama so I feel your pain with the heat. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy Growing!

@theveganveteran Try Early girl bush for large slicing tomatoes. Trust me, I grow them in KS so I know what works in heat.

@kansasgardener5844 Early Girl is one of my favorites for ear start and late fall. I’m doing some research on what is the most resistant to BER and it looks like this one shows some promise.

What do those fertilizers cost?

I noticed when I watered to much when I was first starting, I got blossom end rot. The moment I stoped watering as much have not had it since. I did a lot of those recommended fixes that you spoke of. Nothing worked. Just watered less…same with damping off. I had a major issue with this when I first started seed starting. I almost gave up because everything was dieing. I figured it couldn’t be a disease. What are those chances? I stopped watering as much and fixed my problems. I was able to save a lot just by putting it in dry soil and stopped watering as much.

I like your helpful video Greg. It seems like good information but I live in the south and I'm growing in containers. Do you think I should water more frequently?
@bellesbackyard32647 ай бұрын
Containers are a bit different as each drains differently. Try this simple step. Use your index finger and push it into the soil half way between the plant and the outside of the plant. If it feels moist but not wet you’re good. Do this throughout the week on your normal watering schedule. This will give you an idea on the amount you need to increase or decrease your water. This is a great question! Can I reference you in a quick shorts video? What zone are you in? How big are your containers?
@johnw39527 ай бұрын
@@bellesbackyard3264 I'm in Zone 7 (southeast Tennessee) and I'm growing in 5 gallon containers. Cool, you can reference me in a video!

I have watched several posts about bottom blossom rot. And I coming to a conclusion that many are making it up as they go. I have put in different varieties of tomatoes in same bed and the bottom rot is only occurring in one particular variety, which is the same as the one in this picture eg the heirloom type . 🤷🏽♂️
@bellesbackyard3264Ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct. Heirloom tomatoes in my experience and by some research are more susceptible to BER than hybrid types. The growth habits are and nutrient requirements are slightly different. It all comes down to soil prep and watering as the main cause. I still grow a few heirlooms just for taste and seed saving. What types do you grow?
@joekool9601Ай бұрын
@ with tomatoes I just keep seeds of store bought tomatoes that I like . I’m in Australia , I think the best ones I grown are Gross Lisse , some Cherry tomatoes and some Romas . The only ones that got some BER were the Heirloom type . All in the same bed .

Very good video, you covered all the issues. I am a Master Gardener and many people have problems with bottom end rot problems, including myself. It is usually due to a lack of water. As you say, get your soil tested. Do not use lime, which has calcium but will raise the Ph. As you say egg shells,Tums etc is a waste of time.

I find ber has a lot to do with the plant breed and variety itself. I grow Early girl Bush with zero ber. I also grow Carolina gold with zero ber. This year I tried a new one to me called Best boy Bush and it's got ber. Keep in mind all of these plants are determinate varieties. I grew indeterminate varieties for years, and they all had ber! I went nuts for years and tried everything out there to keep my plants from getting ber. Now I no longer have to. I will only grow determinate varieties from now on and just keep an eye out for the ones that get ber.

I find your comments more logical on this BER discussions. It's beginning to look most realistic the blossom end rot in tomatoes relates more with the varieties than any other cause. Seed producers aren't focused on improvements to help farmers grow healthier produce.
@bellesbackyard32646 ай бұрын
@shaqzeebeats3676 thanks for the comment. I’m actually researching specific varieties resistant to BER as I type this. Waiting on some responses back for suppliers and a few horticulturalist. I’m going to put it to the test next tomato season. @kansasgardener5844 made an interesting point that peaked my curiosity.
@kansasgardener58446 ай бұрын
@shaqzeebeats3676 I actually thought I was the reason my plants got ber. Inconsistent watering, calcium deficiency, etc. Turns out that it wasn't my fault at all. I wish I had started growing determinate tomatoes years ago. Especially Early girl bush and Carolina gold. I've also thought it's strange that cherry tomatoes never get ber. No matter the Varieties.
@joekool9601Ай бұрын
Totally correct 👍 in my experience it only happens in flat bottom tomatoes the rest are healthy and unaffected.
@bellesbackyard3264Ай бұрын
Interesting on the “flat bottom” approach! I now have another project to go research haha.

CaCO3 isn't very soluble. Wouldn't a more soluble calcium nitrate or calcium cholride be better? By the way it's normally pronounced as "cat"-"ion".

Cat ion is actually CORRECTLY pronounced ‘CAT EYE-ON’… and gypsum is pronounced ‘JIP-SUM’ with an “M”…not an “N” 👍
