Very good video Dennis! However, I noticed that you may have forgotten to screw down the cross-wind gear. Thanks for the informative video on this Diawa BG reel.

I should have mentioned that in the narrative. That screw showed up around 13 minutes. I "caught the error" and reinstalled it before I put the rotor on. Thanks for paying attention! Dennis

Your comment about the washer falling out and having to check with the schematic just brought nightmares back to me Dennis. Rememeber the Spinfisher IV 5500 I sent in to you because there was a washer that fell out that I had no idea where it came from but they didn't pictured have in the schematic?

These are a solid value for their price point and have a great range of size offerings. Since I mostly use it for the surf, I re-greased mine with Corrosion-X but it definitely does not feel as smooth as the OEM grease which is less gummy than Corrosion-X. Note for those watching this video but have a larger sized Daiwa BG, that the larger sizes (4500+) have an back-up anti-reverse dog.

That looks like a Gomexus power knob on this BG handle. I really like those power knobs. I like it that this reel has an AR override. Great video Dennis! - Chris

Thanks Chris - Yes - it was the aftermarket handle upgrade that is on this reel - Dennis

Dennis I have taken reels apart that were completely solid packed with grease. I mean they fill it thinking it prevents water intrusion. Someone said it was commonplace with “rock-cod” fishermen. There’s pieces that require oil not grease. Putting grease actually prevents oil from reaching the parts. Plus there’s such a difference in viscosity between the two, especially when the temperature drops. So many times we are our own worst enemy

Well said. In the "old" days reels were poorly sealed and grease packing was common. Today there are a lot of things in a reel that just weren't designed for grease packing, like the bearings and A/R clutch and tight tolerances. Your caution is appropriate if anyone is considering it. - Thanks Steve - Dennis

Another good instructional video, thanks Dennis! I recently bought a Penn 704 manual pickup customized and nicely done “Penn Stall” powder coated reel. When I worked the reel it was sluggish but the price was right so I took the chance. When I serviced the reel the I found the entire case packed solid with what appeared to be automotive grease which I cleaned out, applied Penn grease and it works like a charm. I would not have attempted to service the reel and replace the drag stack before I found your channel, thanks again Dennis!

I have the Diawa Eliminator 2500. When I reel with the handle on the left, it loosens the whole handle assembly. The handle will not stay tight. Do you know how to fix this problem? Prrhaps there is a missing part or something?
@2ndChanceTackleАй бұрын
I'm not sure why this is happening. Screw handles are designed to tighten in the direction you crank to retrieve line and loosen when the reel is turned in the opposite direction. It may be that the internal threads of the main gear or the handle shaft are stripped and not holding - Dennis

I'm pretty sure that crosswind block is glued in. I've tried with the screw as well and can't get it out no matter what I do.

Hi I have the bg3000 when I turn the handle the spool and bail spin but when I apply pressure to the spool just the handle spins.drag works good.any ideas on what the problem could be.
@2ndChanceTackle9 ай бұрын
If you are saying that the rotor does not turn under pressure, it is likely that you have a broken or damaged gear. The two gears are the main gear and the pinion gear. You should check both. The handle drives the main gear, which turns the pinion gear and rotor.. The only other thought is that the lock nut on the rotor is missing and nothing is holding it firm to the pinion gear - Dennis

how many washers go in the Crown?
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
This is a 6 washer set with 3 drag washers that are fabric and 3 that are metal. You can see how to serve them around the 22 minute mark of this video

You will find that Japanese spec. Pozi screwdrivers fit those screws much better than Philips drivers.

So it looks to me like it's the crosswind post that wasn't aligned. I've seen it before and it's not easy to catch. if the post that's not set in isn't aligned perfectly it causes the reel to feel tight. Another issue these reels have, although not this one, is having a bent shaft. If you put too much stress on the shaft it can bend on you. Great video.

Thanks Jeff - yes I think the outer crosswind post was not set properly when they went to reinstall. Best wishes - Dennis
