Daiwa BG5000 reel review (MY2017)

A review of the Daiwa BG5000 reel. From the 4500 upwards the anti reverse switch is removed, the bail now only closed manually and the reel has a 5.7:1 gear ratio

I have just purchased the BG5000 and there is a possible Issue but I am not really sure if it is an issue or its normal behaviour for this reel. Firstly I did not realise that the bail arm had to be manually closed. The query I have is regarding to the resistance encountered when the bail arm is open and winding the reel as if to close the bail arm. It just feels rough. Is this resistance normal or is this a fault with the reel.? I have tried reading the instructions and looked for online reviews etc, but I am still confused about if this is normal for the reel? Hi Andrew, this reel has a manual close bail arm. As a result this will mean while the bail is open if you wind the handle it will feel like it slightly sticks, but the bail will never close. The reason for this is to prevent accidental closure mid-cast. Always close any bails manually as this will help stop wear to the gear train. Try closing manually for one session and then it’ll become second nature from then on

How did the reel stand up to being used over wrecks ?

Wayne Lord yes perfectly! Zero issues of any sort. When the skipper says “reel up” I my terminal tackle is up before and multiplier reel. My retrieve ratio produced more fish. I used “depth counter” marked Power Pro braid. If I was going to upgrade this reel, it’d be a Penn Slammer 3 - but that’s close to £100 more so a Shimano Saragossa is in preference at that price point. I recommend the Daiwa BG5k 100% a great wrecking reel (more torque and drag than most multipliers)

hi, would you recommend this size for throw lures all day aiming for fish in size 30lbs-40lbs in jetty area with strong current? Or would you rather go with 4000 size? I'm plan to use it on a rod 10'6" which I will be using for jigging all day. Thank!

The 5000 reel certainly has the power for that type of fishing, but personally I think it’d be too heavy as it weighs a lot. I think I’d use the 4000 size

mgzw90 that is my problem with weight. I actually plan on sticking with 4000 but I’m just afraid it would broke if I abuse it with heavy fish.

Hi, I notice you were able to spin the reel when your bail was open. My bg 5000 won't spin when the bail is open?

That is because of the auto-closing bailarm. Try openning the bailarm in a different position. If you push the handle with force you should be able to close the bailarm autmatically
