Dennis, I worked on a BG30 today. They are magnificent reels. I’m collecting the series and have six of them now. Until I started collecting these BG reels I could not understand what the difference was between the Daiwa GS and the BG reels. Now I understand. I think I have almost all the silver series, the GS, and the BG Daiwas. I love them all but you can see how each subsequent series got a little better. - Chris

Just curious - have you tried the current line of BG reels?

Thanks for posting this video. I used to fish on a daily basis with this reel but haven't used it in 18 years! Finally went fishing again today and realized it was in desperate need of a good cleaning and lube. Without this video, I would have been lost. Now it spins like a champ! Thanks again!

It seems that we like the same reels. My first reel that wasn’t a Zebco 202 was. Lee’s speed spool bb1 made by Shimano. I bought it in the 80s and caught a lot of fish with that reel.

Hi Dennis, I replaced the old bearings on my BG30 with a new set of stainless bearings that are sealed on both sides (removable shields ) also fitted a new set of carbontex drag washers, both items are available on Ebay . Enjoy watching your videos.
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The BG series are unbeatable. I've seen the ceramic bearings are available for this reel as well. I have a 30 I am going to tune up when I get a chance and I think I will try the ceramics. They are available through Bocabearing.com. Thanks for the comment and thanks for viewing - Dennis

Great tutorial. I have the same reel. It has some wobble when I turn the handle. Any idea what that might be the cause or is that just how they are?
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
That wobble happens on a lot of these BG's and the larger size ones wobble more. I believe It is a rotor balance issue. If the bail wire is bent, or the rotor screw loose it seems to magnify the problem - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Thanks I recently made a Craigslist deal on a bg15 amongst a couple others after I get it serviced do you think that this is enough reel to throw on a catfish rod or should I buy another bass rod for it and find something else for the catfish rod?
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if I replied. The BG15 is strong enough for catfish. I would put it on that pole. The Daiwa BG series is one of my favorites - Dennis

Thanks for the reply I figured you’d say that after seeing the build quality after cracking it open to do a clean and lube job I’m gonna throw some braid on it and give it hell (hopefully) 😁

Thank you for your videos i own penn spinfishers and recently bought a daiwa bg90 and a gs9 both pretty used but good, i was wondering wich is better they seem the same except for the ratchet sounding anti reverse on the gs9?
@2ndChanceTackle6 жыл бұрын
These are both great reels. . I like the GS9, which is a little bit more old school. The BG90 will be a closer match your Spinfishers. I did a video on the overhaul of the GS9. You can watch it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXeUfIiplt2qsJo. You will see the similarities and differences to the BG series.. The new BG Series has changed the technology a lot, but so has the Spinfishers with the VI series. Both have gone to machine cut gearing and other improvements. Thank you for asking - Dennis

Dennis, excellent video and instruction, thanks for sharing your expertise. Do you know where I can get a drag knob for a BG20 (of the same style as the one here)? The center cap on mine fell out, which allowed saltwater in. I researched how to disassemble the reel for cleaning and found this video. I appreciate any info!

Hi Mike - thanks for watching and for contacting me. The part is no longer available new. You best chance is to search EBAY and many sellers offer used parts from reels that broke. There is a good chance yo will be able to find what you need for this reel on the site - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Hello, I have a BG15, which is pretty similar to this reel, and I am having difficulty reassembling it - particularly positioning the bail kick lever spring. Would you happen to have any guidance as to how to position it?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
Yes. The bent side of the spring goes in the small hole under the bail trip arm. I recommend removing the bail wire first. Take the bail arm and put a dot of grease in that small hole to help hold the bail spring. Position the arm over the rotor and load the straight leg of the spring on top of the block on the left side of the assembly. Press down to compress the spring and position the arm on the rotor and then add the cover. This video should help you with the general process kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6PVkKWfr6uej9k. Dennis

I have a Diawa BG30 and a BG60 that I purchased 20 plus years ago and have never used them. I am considering using them for lakers in north Canada next year vs buying new reels after watching your video. Would you advise servicing them as per your video prior to using them or not? Great video and much appreciated.

Absolutely. You should service these the old grease could cause problems if you don’t

You probably have to replace the drag washers or clean the assembly. Also. check to make sure the drag adjuster knob is not broken or cracked

I own a Daiwa BG 15. The anti reverse is not engaging all the way/partially. Do you have a fix for this? I bought the reel new old stock a yr ago and I've never opened the side covers... Please help.
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
Can you send me a picture. There are different set-ups. Best bet is to get the schematic for the reel and check the parts related to the anti-reverse. Some older ones have the anti-reverse dog and spring. The newer ones have the anti-reverse clutch (bearing) for instant anti-reverse. If you can identify which one you have, I can see if I can help further - Dennis
@matthewnoll70285 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle I have the old dog and spring. The anti reverse did not engage instantly. It would roll back slightly then engage. Maybe I'll break it down and have a go at it myself
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
My guess is you have a broken or disconnected spring. The other option is a worn dog, where the tip does not stick, but if this is NEW Old Stock, then the dog should not be the problem. Best wishes on the tear down. Remember to take picture before, during and after you remove significant pieces so that you have the roadmap for reassembly. Send me a note if you get stuck along the way and I will see if I can help - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
Mike - it looks like the circle end of the spring nests inside the bail arm carrier and the long leg fits into the rotor. I don't have one in the shop. Sounds like you have the schematic if you have the part number. If not, look at the burst diagram here www.mikesreelrepair.com/daiwa-aird1000sh-4000sh/ it should help with the orientation. Remember, when you load the springs on bails, they should be in the off position to eliminate the tension on the spring when. you are putting it back on. If this does not help, send me a picture to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com with pictures of your parts and the rotor side and bail arm and I will try to help further - Dennis

Good video, but no mention of the bail spring (s) or roller.
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
I generally do not service a bail, save for a drop of oil on the roller and slots, unless the bail is actually broken. Bails are spring driven and the springs do not require any maintenance - Dennis
