The 50H is one of my favorites on a very short list. Graphite changed everything and Daiwa went to those frames using them on the later Sealine reels to reduce weight and cost. They are still making good reels, but I will always be partial to the 50H.

Dennis - A great video like all of yours. What I usually do as part of maintenance is always put PENN blue grease or PENN muscle grease on the drive gear and pinion with all of my PENN and DAIWA conventional reels - if I do nothing else, I hit the drive and pinions with grease at the beginning of each season. Since I bottom fish, my reels don't get the same use intensity one gets with constant casting & retrieving of lures.

I just bought one of these reels and love it! The only issue with it is the brake, it will not affect the spool until it's bottomed out and then it's very fine adjustment. Just a 1/16" of a turn and it's too tight vs too loose. I would appreciate your advice. Thanks
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
Not much you can do there. I would that the reel apart and check each side plate bearing. If there is a lot of dried grease on them, it may be limiting your adjustment - Dennis

That is typical of the old Daiwa Sea Line series. These were one of the best reels ever made. I don't know for certain when the reel was introduced, but My 50H is at least 25 years old and may be older. You can't beat this 50H as a rugged work horse. Totally over-engineered. What do you recommend for the fabric drag washers? Is there an upgrade for the 50H that can still be bought in stores or online?
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
Those original 50H washers are very strong. They do not need to be upgraded if yours are not worn. If you like, Carbontex would be the next step. The original washers are thicker than the Carbontex, so you may need to add an extra layer in the drag stack if you make the conversion - Dennis

What do you think are the differences between this particular 50 and today's sealine gold and blk 50? Performance wise
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
I think they are pretty similar, given that there is a 25 year difference in technology. The main difference is that the current Sealine has a higher retrieve ratio. The original 50H reels were absolutely bulletproof. The newer one has stainless and bronze gearing, so that is good. Both have ball bearing construction. Both were star drag reels with good max drag. Let's see how the graphite case and spool holds up over time on the newer version. I still have a 50H and still fish it for big fish here in the northeast. - Dennis.
