Hi Dennis, Nice Job On This Reel As always. Very Similar to My Diawa GS850RD Rear Drag ! So Another Near Future Helpful Video For Me. Looks About The Same Size.

Looks like a really good Beach Reel !

It was!I think it is. The question will be on max drag capacity. The rear drag reels do not have a lot of drag, so that can be an issue with large fish -

I can't count how many rear drag spinning reels I have where the drag knob was cracked, broken, or missing. Shakespear's Contender series, the Penn 230,240,250, GR series, Daiwa's small and large like this one and others to name a few. Penn replacement knobs are still available, try to find one for that Daiwa or Shakespear. They couldn't have put it in a more vulnerable spot (hence "bump guards") on nearly all contemporary spinners. I don't think they still make rear drags today? do they? BTW, hope my doctor never tells me " you're too old to work on". Thanks Dennis.

Rear drag reels are still made today, but mostly for fresh water fishing applications.

Dennis, based on the four large saltwater rear drag reels I have, I find this drag to be inadequate. The one of mine that is a Daiwa is a 9000RD and has 12 drag washers in it. The three Shimano SSG 7000 reels each have 14 drag washers in each. I am glad this Daiwa does not have that rubberized AR claw that will dissolve if lubricants touch it. I have an AS 7050 rear drag that had that AR claw and required a bush fix to make the reel operate properly. I was wondering if this Daiwa had the same spool locking switch in it like my 9000RD. I wrote you and asked you about that. Also, all four of mt large rear drag saltwater reels are very smooth operators too. I was also wondering if this 7050 has an all metal case and aluminum spool? I do like this reel. Great video Dennis! - Chris

I initially thought this one had the claw and I was relieved to find that it was a more traditional dog with he eccentric spring set up!

My Shakespeare reel has rust on the drag adjuster and more rust elsewhere inside (I just learned I should oil parts of reel) How should I clean rust off with steel wool?
@2ndChanceTackle7 ай бұрын
Steel wool and metal polish should clean superficial rust. If the washers are pitted, they need to be replaced as they will tear up the drags - Thanks for asking - Dennis
