I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

Great video! I don’t mind the click and thin bail arm for reasons people say below, but I really appreciate this sort of ‘real world practical’ review. I’d like to own a stradic and a ballistic and test them out over a few years, or just enjoy both. I don’t think it has to be as black and white as being a shimano or Daiwa person

Thanks. Surely both reels will catch fish! For me though, it's almost "white" for Daiwas. I am more used to them and seems can't get used to Shimanos because of the reasons I stated in the video. I am sure I will try odd Shimano along the way with removed clicker (and possibly 500 size reel where that thin bail may feel great). Cheers

I hear what your saying Andrew. And I beleive a lot of my other reels, including the Shimano Ci4 2500 does the same but to a lesser noise extent. Personally I'd rather have a decent gearing/clutch drag system on a reel and smooth turning of the handle every time over a noisy bale arm. I agree that the bale arm on these smaller reels should be less bulky, and thinner gauge. But it's Shimano for me every time.😉👍

Shimano put the extra bail components to make sure the bail does not close while casting lures. Clunky sounding but for a reason. Best reel is gonna depend on what you fish for. Personally (Penn) makes reels that hold up and have serious drag power. The Penn Slammer III works for me, here's why. You can take a saltwater reel to freshwater but a freshwater reel in salt means trouble. Penn has excellent true IP rated seals vs a grease layer or other gimmicks some use . I fish more saltwater but also do 4-5 sturgeon trips in the California Delta so the Slammer lll is perfect. The slammer comes in many sizes as well .
@AndrewsKnots
@AndrewsKnots 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think I ever had Daiwa close up on the cast. It's the spring which holds the bail in closed or open position.. This video wasn't too say, that Shimanos are bad reels. Just bails are out-dated, in my opinion. In any case, you are 100% right saying that different fishing styles may require different reel. Also about saltwater/freshwater reels - the better sealing you can get the longer the reel will last! ✌

@@AndrewsKnots Yep! actually helped a friend take apart a C-14 post a 50lb bat ray smoking the reel. Shimano at 1 holland drive Irvine CA are very friendly service advisors and had parts. I did the work because they were a bit backed up. The C-14 had some wear which I felt the reel should of been able to handle. Shimano has been very nice with old reels like a 3500B bait runner circa 1984 and they actually gave me parts for free from their library of stored parts. I also use a parents Stella when chasing Bluefin tuna and its awesome but it also costed 1250 and needs a 200 dollar service periodically. Price and power wise for the money: (Penn Slammer lll 10500 under $300 on sale and cheaper on blowout sales.) Penn built this Slammer lll reel and it absolutely deserved the ICAST awards it won. Great heavy bail with no line roller issues. No line cutting into the bail housing assembly. Line stays on the roller and wont slip off. The 10500 Slammer lll handles 540 yards of 80lb braid and has 60 lbs of drag. Is it extreme? vs a angry monster that refuses to come off the bottom LOL!!! NO,recently this reel was put against a giant freshwater sting ray, a Fraser River B.C Sturgeon both close to 1000 lbs and the slammer won. A kid in Florida used the slammer lll 10500 to do a catch and release on a massive 650lb grouper that actually pulled the kid in the water, went for a swim, recovered,and still landed the grouper for a picture. Whats interesting as well is that a number of reel raters doing PROS and cons called the reel to Expensive but did not say to expensive on the Twin turbo or Stella from Shimano? the twin turbo running around $500 and the Stella a whopping 1250 plus. Value wise gotta go with the Penn Slammer lll 's which have caught a number of big big fish and have not failed under pressure.

hey andrew there is a reason the bails are thin on the stradic. the lighter bail decrease shock load when the bail snaps shut. reducing wear to the joints, and drive train. (i close my bail manually (90%) of the time for this reason, also to feather my line to control my cast to where i want it to land). it also allows for a lighter bail spring. when the bail needs to accelerate closed, less mass equals less inertia for the spring to have to overcome and get the bail traveling quick to close.
@AndrewsKnots
@AndrewsKnots 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, See, I don't think that Shimano thin bails are lighter as Daiwa AIR bails are hollow. I just know one thing that Shimano thin ones do feel flimsy and combined with that crack sound when opening, it equals to poor feel of the product. Daiwa bails feels much stronger and it would confirm the "materials physics" rule where hollow strip is stronger than solid one made from the same material and similar diameter (hollow one will be ligther as well). Cheers
@robertdumicz7309
@robertdumicz7309 Жыл бұрын
@@AndrewsKnots True but the hollow ones are more prone to dents and the wall may easier be cut by the line, so there are pros and cons in my opinion and if those Daiwa bails are made of aluminium, then they realy are more prone to breakage of itself and of the line, since softer materials are more adherent and thus develop greater wear and heat. I don't have any of the aforementioned reels from any of those two companies but instead i own a heavy and full stainless steel train reel.

I have to agree with you there... I've noticed that DAIWA's line rollers never seem to fail come bush or bearing wheras I sadly must say, that SHIMANO's entry-levil and mid-tange reels' line rollers are keen to fail rather quickly even if serviced regularly - that little ridge in the roller which is part of their line managing system causes damage to braid after a while...

It is very rare to find the perfect reel, it is usually a trade off between how many things you like about the reel vs things you do not like. I have 2 Shimano 4000OC reels, I didn’t really like them to begin with, but over time I have grown to like them very much when I realised that they are very strong and do everything I expect from a reel.

While I agree with you about the shimano reel being thin, it reduces rotating mass which is why the start up spin is easier. It's also probably why the daiwas have better spinning momentum. More weight to keep it spinning.

Both of mine are Equal play in handle.my new fl stradic is as good as the certate and better line lay on stradic as well. Thin bail is good. Daiwa bail open feels cheep.

Thanks for sharing! Yes, as you say, personal preference is the key here as both sides make great reels! ✌ I wouldn't switch of my Daiwas to Shimanos but I admit that never Shimanos (like Stradic FL) has a bit nicer bail sound (still thin) and less handle wobble. 👌

I don't know why there is wobble in the handle. Is the side bearing in it stuffed? Mine are solid in that area, about equal to the Daiwa. Make sure the screws are firm on the side plate.

I had Shimano Saharas and at 1st I loved them, but my bails actually deformed on them and they weren’t open and closing properly and the bail spring was sloppy. I do not like the thin bail wire, especially. I replaced the Saharas with Daiwa Excelors and I’m very happy with those.

The only thing that bothers me about Daiwas is their screw in handles, if you don't tighten it a bit harder it will unscrew itself on a light tap. When you operate the reel the handle gets tighter. A screw in handle is used by all the higher end spinning reels as it allows a more secure connection with less movement of the handle in relation to the body once secured.

I will gladly take a this stainless one piece wire over hollow aluminum. I still can't figure out why everyone but Shimano had started doing that. That fat ugly bale wire is why I dropped Penn for Shimano in saltwater. The "click" is reassuring, when you hear that you know you can cast hard and not have a bale flippy lost lure. But I guess for trout or perch what does it even matter.

I have Shimano Soare 500s CI4+ and it is a sweet little reel for what it does. What strikes me is that my reel has a smooth but toughish handle rotation which is surprising for a small reel. And it has been like that out of the box. It actually gets lighter after some use especially in warm weather. Any idea if it is a defect or a feature of this reel? I don’t have vast experience wish Shimano, more a Daiwa guy myself but Daiwa doesn’t seem to have a lot of choice in 500-1000 range. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Good video. I agree, the Shimano bail click sounds cheap. I also think the Daiwa bails close with a higher quality feel and sound. I own both brands, but prefer the Daiwas. It seems like many of the Shimanos I purchase, all seem smooth out of the box. After a few weeks of fishing them, I always feel some kind of grindiness that pisses me off. @AndrewsKnots
@AndrewsKnots 3 жыл бұрын
Shimano people do love that sound, I am aware of that. But also I know a few, who actually removed that clicker as well. In any case, crack sound does not have a function as bail stops (and can't go any furher) just after the crack. For example, that crack is needed on Shimano reels as much as if that crack would be needed on cars just before the steering wheel is fully spun to one or other direction to tell the driver that "wheels are at max. angle".. All in all, if there is a mechanical stop and the moving part can't go any further, why complicate it with crazy sound effects? :)

What about Quantum Throttle II Spinning Reel? I’m looking for my first setup and I want a decent build. I understand under $100 you’re not getting complete refinement but if I can go to Dick’s Sporting or even Walmart and get something I can learn on and that will have some lasting build quality I want something in the $50-$75 range. I know nothing about fishing but I know Shimano makes great moving (bicycle gears) products. Also being made in Japan is a huge sell point for me. Japanese quality is up there with German and dare I say they are the best overall quality in the world generally speaking. I’m sure there are $500-$2000 reels that are much better but within that price point of $50-$75 I want something that is ready out of the box to use. If I like fishing I will most definitely upgrade and try another brand. But for a one and done setup is it worth getting Shimano over a Quantum Throttle 2 setup… and as my first river/lake bank fishing setup what is the ideal size 7ft or 8/ft? I have been a avid fisherman for 40 years. Shimano has been the best reels during that time hands down. Not even debatable. However, I feel Daiwa has caught them. The new shimano spinning reels have a HUGE problem with the handles. I have shimano reels that are 30 yrs old and still work perfectly believe it or not. My Stradic Ci4+ that is 3 years old handle recently broke. Just broke right off when reeling in a fish. Puzzled, I went home and looked at my Stradic FK and the handle is extremely loose as in LOTS of play. It's a SERIOUS problem. Never thought handles could be the downfall of a reel but it is. I really can't believe shimano hasn't corrected this issue. I'm buying a Daiwa Ballistic or Kage tomorrow. Never thought I'd buy Daiwa again.

If you only fish fresh water then fair enough daiwa’s are excellent, but take a ‘normal’ Daiwa to do a season’s bass fishing in the salt and you will regret it in a matter of days, they have an ‘illusion’ of quality and the salt exposes this in no time at all. shimano’s however last for seasons with a little bit of care.

Hi, can you try putting a handle from 2500 fuego to 2000 fuego? I want to replace handle of my exceler 2000 to handle of fuego, but fuego's handle 2000 size is not in stock..only 2500.

First time I’ve seen your videos and was very impressed. I collect vintage surf spinning reels mostly manufactured before 1980. The odd thing about what you are saying is that it holds true for earky Shimano and Daiwa reels also. I have the complete MLZ Shimano series and the complete Daiwa Silver Series. Both series were manufactured in the 1870s and early 80s. I like and use both but I’d choose the Daiwa over the Shimano for largely exactly the same reasons. That was quite surprising to me. It is uncanny. I liked your video and will continue watching. I am a strong fan of vintage French spinning reels like Luxor, Mitchell, Bretton, and Bam Peerless. I also have a very rare Mer 52 PUNCH PUM surf spinning reel that you would have to see and use to believe. I have about 150 spinning reels now of many different brands from many countries. Do you ever do any videos of vintage spinning reels? Thanks for reading my comment. --- Chris Jenkins

Most of my reels have been Shimano. It was first reel i bought. However, lately ive been getting Daiwas. I think in the smaller 1-2000 sizes they are better especially the drag.

You seam lost? Do you fish alot? Or sit in an office. The click is a long lasting lock because the fuego and okuma and other cheap brands will close bails over time. This means bails closing mid cast snapping lures off. This is why they are made this way.

"You seam lost? " - you know better. "Do you fish alot?" - depends on the week but somewhere 10-20 h. per week. "fuego and okuma and other cheap brands" - Fuego is not a brand but a model of one Daiwa reels.

@@AndrewsKnots I would of thought that you didn't need everything explained but yes fuego is diawa.. if that helps you I sell them and know the direct rep in California for them but the cheaper materials won't take the same beating by fish over time as shimano. And okuma is good for the guys and gals that only fish a few times out of the year but they certainly wear out fast and then the drags shutter and don't stay consistent I see all the failures from guides burning through them every few months.

Which band is best Is an interesting debate over a beer. All the big brands make reels at various price points to attract sales. Generally, the more you pay, the better the reel. With more expensive reels, the money is in what you don't see, like the quality of the internal gearing. I.M.O, there's not much more from an engineering point of view that can be done to a reel to truly make it any better after a price point of £150. Useing an analogy. Strawberries and cream taste great, but with more cream, does it taste better. Three things matter with reels. The right reel for the right job Reliability and a responsive drag when playing fish. If you have these three in your reel it's the right reel.

That click sound may be a product of a detent to hold the bail open/closed. I’m not sure they purposely “made” a click. To be honest. I’ve got daiwas and shimanos and never noticed a click. I’ll have to check my reels to see if it’s there.

From what I seen, click is added intentionally just to have a click.

@@AndrewsKnots I have a Daiwa BG magsealed, bought it a few years ago for salt water fishing, It comes with carbon drag washers out of the box, but honestly, I like the Stradic drag much better, even though i was very disappointed of it because of the line guide.

Shimano is smoother. Daiwa last much longer ! My old BG 5 Series is 40 years old and seldom oiled. Still spins. Still catch big fish. Bought new BG 4500 with dual anti reverse. It's Sama size as Shimano 6 series and bigger lines !

@@AndrewsKnots If you apply enough grease any reel will last. This guy absolutely drowns his Daiwa SG in grease. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4TQZmhnq8SaeMU) It won't run nearly as freely but then you usually don't need so much finesse when fishing in the ocean. But I am looking forward to fully sealed reels coming down in price.
