In Costa rica, all that gear is a big target. Don't set anything down even for one second without keeping a hand, foot, or the leg of the chair thru the strap. Keep your passport and papers on your body inside clothing and take it to the shower, don't leave it laying in the bedroom. Lock the windows if you leave a room, thieves use poles to reach inside and take your things. Split up money, put enough for emergency in as private a place as possible.

Excellent advice! Particularly when on buses (and in bus stations). Most hostels have backpack lockers (you'll probably need to provide your own lock) or at least a small "secure?" area behind the front desk where you can leave your backpack.

The thing is Rodrigo you are now a tourist, and my friend being a tourist you get to pay tourist prices.. I can just say you need to find different places to eat with cheaper price….blessings 💖💖🇦🇺
@ProlijoWT3 жыл бұрын
That is so true! But that can be difficult when you're in particularly touristy places like Puerto Viejo.
@rmcc423 жыл бұрын
Sorry but there are very few places "cheaper" to eat in Costa Rica! It is much more expensive than Panama. Also him being Latino he will not be noticed as a tourist unless he tells them he is. I am a gringo but have been living in CR for 16 years.
@ProlijoWT3 жыл бұрын
@@rmcc42 I agree that there may be very few places in CR that are cheaper to eat than they are in Panama. CR is in general a much more expensive country (for a wide variety of reasons ranging from the influx of tourist and expat dollars to customs & duties laws to non-proximity to the Panama Canal, which is a huge advantage for Panama). But I think Nana's point wasn't about any comparison between CR and other places. I think she meant that there are somewhat less expensive vs even more expensive places WITHIN CR and that especially at the more touristy places (like PV, Fortuna, Quepos) you're more likely to encounter the "Gringo Tax" (which makes things even more expensive for tourists and expats than the already relatively high prices for locals). RELATIVE bargains are still to be found even in such places IF you're willing to get off the beaten track and get more "local" but it will still be hard to find in such places. As for his being latino making him non-noticible as a tourist. True, he'll probably not get pegged as just some rich gringo tourist. However, if he's going around with 2 backpacks and filming videos with expensive camera equipment, he doesn't have to tell them anything. He'll still be easily spotted as a tourist of some sort with at least some level of wealth (and unfamiliarity with the local environment), which to certain ticos will make him a mark. I base this on nearly 40 years of extensive (backpacker-style) travel through Central America from Mexico to Peru including especially quite a bit of time living and studying in CR.

As others have commented, we know rabo as oxtail. It's actually part of the Cuban cuisine here in FL and it's typically served in sort of a stew with red (tomato-based) sauce (I guess that helps soften up the meat). But, idk, maybe it's different in CR and they use the tail of the cow? Or maybe this is a problem in translation because I've seen Vaca translated as either cow or ox. Definitely true about the collagen if you eat the cartilage part (which, imho, is the best thing about eating oxtail). As for fruit juices, my favorite when traveling in that part of the world is cas or, if drinking a licuado, guanabana. Also while traveling the Caribbean side of CR, try coconut rice and patacones (a double fried green plantain disk that is called by different names in different countries such as tostones, tachino or chatinos, plantain frito or frito verde in DR and bananes pesées in Haiti).
@ProlijoWT3 жыл бұрын
The best patacones I've ever had was actually at a little hole in the wall place right down at the end of the road from Puerto Viejo in Manzanillo. There they somehow fashioned the plantain into a little scoop and topped it with different things like salsa, queso, natilla (sour cream) or guacamole. Wash them down with an icy cold Imperial on a hot summer afternoon while enjoying the ocean breeze and watching the surfers from your shaded spot on the bar's balcony. It doesn't get much better than that

Was in Puerto Viejo de Tallamanca in July, and have traveled throughout Central America, so I'm really looking forward to your take on the countries as you go along. Costa Rica is expensive, food is expensive but the wildlife is unsurpassed. Food will get cheaper in the other Central American countries as you go along. In Puerto Viejo, the Bakery just south of town is excellent, not cheap but highly recommend. There's also an Afro-caribe place, I'm trying to remember the name but it's a few generations of the same family, south of town. Oh and watch for wild Great Green Macaws and Scarlet macaws in the trees on the beach, and Manzillo Blue crabs are everywhere, especially near - Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge which is a pretty little Reserve, with nice white sand beaches and inexpensive entry. One way to defray the cost of food is to head to a grocery store and buy some snacks to carry with you, then have a picnic on the beach for at least one meal a day, so you aren't paying expensive restaurant prices all of the time. Enjoy, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. Pura vida!
