Nasser Al-Attiyah is very unhappy with his BRX Hunter and flew home at stage 9.
But didn't that happen already 12 years ago?
Are these normal problems or is he too sensitive?
Where will he drive next year?
Let me know in the comments below!

Nasser is a fantastic rally driver, there's no denying that. One of the best raid drivers in the last 20 years. However, this is very unprofessional behavior, leaving his teammate with no help to face the Audis. You can't win every year, just play the team game for 3 more days. Can't say I'm surprised when the member of a royal family acts like a spoiled rich kid who didn't get his toys.

You hit the point. Today we saw all 3 Audis working together to get the job done. This is a realy selfish behaviour and will not help the team spirit in the long run. I never realy understood why he even went to BRX and chose Loeb as his teammate specialy since he is in the team for so long and a leader ?

Stéphane Peterhansel has had a bad Dakar this year too, but he’s still driving, riding shotgun for Carlos Sainz, to assist him with spare tyres and parts on each stage to ensure Sainz can maintain his lead and win the rally outright. Why did Al-Attiyah not do this for Sebastian Loeb? Loeb is in second place as I write this, 14 mins behind Sainz and could do with help and assistance from his team mate Al-Attiyah to close in on Sainz and possibly win. On the face of it Al-Attiyah is walking away from his team responsibilities, and certainly this is making life extra hard for Loeb, who is giving everything to achieve his first Dakar win. Very poor sportsmanship from Al-Attiyah; will this win the gold medal for Dummy Spit Of The Year?

because Nasser engine broke. He can't do anything. With the penalty he gets, he would be starting at least 1 hour to 2 behind. So if Loeb needs help, would have to wait. Like today, broken front control arm and had to wait for the Chinese Prodrive crew and lost 1 hour.

That is incredibly unprofessional. I get that that it is annoying that the car breaks a lot, but to straight up say to the media, that he is never gonna drive that car again is so childish. All champions complain when their vehicles have mechanical failures. I can give you a list of F1, WRC, Nascar etc all of whom accept ups and downs in races but cannot stomach repeated mechanical failures. Yes Loeb commented that nothing wrong with his car yesterday as he was closing in on Sainz on great driving, but now Loeb has dropped over an hour because of Mechanical failure and he can only win if Sainz drops out or if he has mechanical failures.

The Toyota was built around his driving style, but the BRX is not . he expected the car to adapt to him rather than him to the car like Seb has done. There is a video showing Seb saying that he sets the car up to suit him whilst Nasser gets in and drives hard . so there are issues for both BRX and Nasser. but it will be resolved by them both.

The BRX is more of a rally car compared to the Hilux which is a proper rally raid car. Loeb is a rally driver and of course he has less issues adapting to the car (and his talent behind a wheel is unmatched too). I would say Nasser accepted to drive the Hunter and some promises were made by the manufacturer to secure the best rally raid driver available, as you said, in the arab desert. It’s unprofessional to leave the Dakar midway but he is putting his W2RC title in jeopardy as well, i doubt the only reason behind this is his frustration. There must be something else cooking, Sainz and Peterhansel will be free agents as well since Audi is closing the team i suppose, so the silly season will bring us very big surprises.

It is a shock, dealing with the Hunter, if Loeb's experience is anything to go by. But it's obvious that Seb is adapting to the car, and it's yielding good results. Loeb also had "simple" issues with his car as well. He said in one of the prior stages that the hydraulic jack was leaking. And Loeb also has a lot of punctures during this Dakar edition as well. So in my opinion Prodrive car is not as mature as Hilux which is quite reliable. So it is a shame for Al-Attiyah but I think he made the right choice. I think if Al-Attiyah stayed at Toyota, he would have dominated this rally once again. Audis are a challenge but not flawless either.

I think Al-Attyiah's behaviour is hard to understand and childish for Western people, but it makes perfect sense in his own culture: Saudis are known for their culture of honour. Al-Attyiah, based on who he is, and on his performances as the master of the Saudi Dakar expects to be treated with the utmost respect. By providing him with a car that breaks, BRX is deeply disrespecting him, in his eyes humiliating him in public, relegating him to a loser and supporting character position, from the winner he is supposed to be. At some point, he could not bear this "humiliation" anymore, and decided to humiliate BRX in turn, by leaving while making as much noise as possible, and dragging BRX in the dirt. That doesn't mean he doesn't know how to be selfless, I am sure he would not mind supporting Loeb in better conditions. But now helping his friend win became less important than salvaging his honour, so he left. You might think this is backfiring now, since there's a big backlash, but he is actually not concerned about his reputation, more about his honour. I still think that he is overreacting, and overall I believe such a strong culture of honour to be counterproductive, unpragmatic, somewhat selfish and not conducive to peace or respect, but it's interesting nonetheless to see how coherent he is acting in regard to his own culture. It also shows that the Dakar and WRC really are worldwide and diverse in terms of culture!

Nasser is a great driver, but his statement that the electri Audi e-tron will retire after three days, came back to bite him in the ass. Not only did electric Audi e-tron end up winning, but he had to retire from the event. The BRX hunter was not as reliable as the Toyota Hilux.

No surprise the Ford engine and UK-built car can’t handle the expected demands in harsh environments - Ford like GM is an inferior ‘bogun ’ brand here in Australia and I wouldn’t touch a UK-built or US-built car with a barge pole - look at how unreliable and crap the Range Rover, Land Rover and Jeep are - I drive a Toyota Hilux for a good reason because they can handle our outback conditions here and are very reliable - Audi are a good proven vehicle as well - so I don’t blame Al-Attiyah leaving because he has every right if he can’t rely on Prodrive to produce a durable vehicle - have a look at the Boeing Max series debacles - would you fly on one if you really knew how badly they’re built? - I should know having worked in the aviation industry.

Is it not refreshing to see someone in this sport speak their mind? All motorsport is full of clones who dare not say a word that might harm manufacturers/owners/sponsors etc leaving a very dull experience for fans - there is no point in 99% of the interviews we see - they are all just mindless corporate drivel. All this comparison with Loeb's actions versus Nasser's - which one has won Dakar? Maybe Prodrive will get off their pedestal (based on their past glories in WRC etc) and ship a few cars to compete in the South African Cross Country championship. Then possibly they will develop a vehicle that is up for the task. For something that costs at least 3x more than the Toyota, the return on investment is pitiful.

Dakar is about finishing what you started. True Dakar racers stick it out to the end. Being able to help a teammate get on the podium or just beat a rival team can be turned into a personal/team "win" that can be celebrated and create great bonds of comradery. Just finishing the Dakar, especially when you've had to endure misfortune, is what having character is all about. Nasser is just showing his lack of character. Most of us were already aware of his lack there of.

There are countless examples of others who have chose to finish and help their teammates, because they're better men than Nasser. He's just a spoiled diva, only out there for himself. Perhaps that's just the values instilled in him, and apparently his fans.

You were too quick to judge Nasser Al Attiyah. He turned out to br right after all, see what happend to Loeb today. The unreliablity is very clear in the Hunter. A champion deserves a car that does not have mechanical failures and that is exactly what got Nasser and now Loeb to lose to Sainz. Also it is not the South African built Toyota that was reliable, Toyota car was developed under Al Attiyah guidance to reach the level to win the championship. You need to understand that Champions build cars to win, and it is not cars that build champions.
@niko7903
@niko7903 5 ай бұрын
You don't know what you're talking about. Champions don't give up, and champions pick up their teams and teammates. Also, if Nasser is so great at development, he should use the remaining rounds to gather information to develop the vehicle. You just seem like you're making excuses for a spoiled guy with a bad attitude, due to personal preferences, where your opinion might be very different for another driver.
