Rating - 8.9/10 - I thoroughly enjoyed this ep. The twists and turns were great. I’m a fan of Benny, he just seems so interesting. Loved that he looked out for his great granddaughter but I feel for her she must be traumatised right about now. I enjoyed Martins return and the reasons behind it too, the boys were so naughty to each other this episode but I truly think that Dean went too far here. I can’t wait to watch the next ep just to see how things pan out with Amelia as well as the brothers relationship!

Yes, Deans move on Sam was manipulative, but Sam's move was even more so. Imagine having your brother track down and attempt to kill the person who saved your life time and time again during warfare all because they were from an enemy nation.

Remember in season 2 'Bloodlust' Sam was all for letting the vampires that he'd known for 10 mins go free unsupervised, but he doesn't trust Benny who Dean has known and fought beside for months. Plus he sends someone that he knows is mentally unstable. Sam was not making rational decisions here, I think his jealousy was showing.

So if Sam had a Vampire friend and in order for Martin and Dean to not kill him you would call Lisa and Ben just to get Dean off your tracks?? You know dammn well Dean would never forgive his brother for that. That would be worse than siding with a demon over him, knowing full well that Dean would drop everything no matter what to go and save them. Reverse the roles. All I've seen from everyone so far is "Dean can't do wrong no matter what and Sam will always do bad" it's literally going back to season 5 when at the start Sam deserved everything. Dean was done with his Brother but who stepped in and gave the perfect wake up call "Bobby Singer". Sam deserved the hate at the start of season 5, but he worked for it, he worked for his brother to love him again. It's people are really depicting Dean and Sam as Michael and Lucifer and nothing can change when there's both deeper sides

I feel like both of them are acting angsty and crossing lines. Beginning with Sam not looking for Dean in purgatory and Dean doing this- just not cool. Sam is very clearly jealous of Benny and Dean's faith in him and Dean is yet not over Sam disappointing him. It is hard to say who is at more fault here, since they love e/o so much, both of them know exactly how to push e/o buttons and strike where it hurts the most.

I liked your comment about Benny's actor. He was on the show previously as a good vamp as one of the vamps in s2 that Gordon tried to kill (thought he was gonna be that same character but still ended up a cool character). He's a decent actor in this show and glad he's getting some recognition from you. *he was also the guard in X2 that Mystique poisons to get Magneto out of prison)

Nope. This wasn't a snapshot, heat of the moment decision, this was a pre-planned weaponization of Sam's emotions and of some of his greatest fears re the people he loves dying, he says it himself "that what happened to Jess..." that is a real and clearly still very present fear in Sam and Dean KNOWS THIS otherwise he wouldn't have been able to weaponize it in this manner. The fact that Dean had changed the number a "while back" proves that it had almost nothing to do with the Benny situation, he just took advantage of a weapon he'd already created.

But the fact that Dean had changed the number "a while back" also means that even before Sam told him that he had put Martin to watch Benny (that was all he had done so far) he'd already changed Amelia's number, and this could easily imply that he was planning to use it in any situation that suited him, not just in regards to save Benny.

Dean was manipulative and caused Sam emotional pain... but thinking that sending a message from a loved one who in the end is fine and safe... would be worse than premeditating and sending a madman to "evaluate" the friend of your brother is complicated... Besides wanting to kill him without even you investigating clearly he was just wanting an excuse to take benny out of Dean's life. Because he'd rather hurt benny than face that he was wrong to just go on with life without an iota of worry about his brother, who thinking about the flashbacks now doesn't show any time sam really misses Dean... and neither does me talk about Cas because if he didn't even suffer from his brother's absence, who would say the friend who is "more" his brother's friend. for me I would have done the same thing as Dean, what could Dean have done? tied the two together like martin did to him

Amelia's dad is also the airport guy from Phantom Traveller in season 1. And the angel guy in a hot dog stand outfit is the kid from season 1's Bugs. Those are the only one's i've caught

I don't blame Dean at all. There really was no other way to get Sam away. Also Sam wasn't going to give Benny the benefit of the doubt. He was just going to kill him. Dean did what he had to do, just like Sam does. I also can't stand Amelia. Her personality is just off putting. It doesn't help that Sam neglected not only looking for his brother but protecting Kevin because of her. And all the flash backs got on my nerves. I think the purgatory stuff was way more interesting. This is definitely not one of my favorite seasons but hey, at least the finale is good.

Sam bailed on Dean and Cas when they went to Purgatory, he bailed on Kevin when he needed him most, he bailed on Amelia when he had told her he wanted to work it out and snuck out in the middle of the night like a coward, he had Benny followed for NO good reason aside from petulant sibling jealousy. He bailed on Martin during a vamp hunt and left him in the woods alone where he probably would have died if anyone wanted to kill him. And then *that* unhinged asshole had it coming to him after what he did. And who put crazy Martin in this position? SAM. As for Sam... he's been such a shithead sooo many times, people tend to forget and it blows my mind. It was a bad move by Dean, but I don't blame him one bit for having Bennys back because loyalty means something to Dean. And Benny forged a bond he could trust in the short time they fought together. He became a brother. Sam was being a bitch. If it were anyone but Sam betraying Dean over and over, they'd either be dead or completely, permanently ostracized from Deans life. He gets infinite chances to screw up and Dean will always forgive him and take responsibility for his own bullshit. That's a good brother. On top of everything else he's done for Sam... I don't think anyone can say otherwise. Hoooo boy, season 8 Sam is clearly not my favorite. Sorry!! I swear... I get back to liking Sam in later seasons, but it took some doing 😂

@BoundlessBookOwl I agree with you as well! I get a bit defensive over Dean... I think because people are quick to jump on him and I've never understood why. Never in my worst nightmares did I think I would be ranting and raving so much about a damn CW t.v. show via KZbin comments, but here I am... this show just has that effect on people. 🤣 I appreciate that its characters are so complex and lived in that they really inspire a lot of passion, especially when things go off the rails. I did not see a single comment that said 'Sam could bring Dean back from Purgatory". However, I saw numerous comments wishing if only Sam did some research on how to find Dean. And, if only Sam tried to find ways, or find help if he can't go alone, to rescue Kevin. That's it. Maybe not immediately after Dean got sucked into Purgatory as he was messed up then, but Sam had a year to try.

Ah yes, the beloved/dreaded "Citizen Fang" I watched this one when it 1st aired in 2012 and knew about a minute and a half in that it was gonna end badly. Both brothers pissed me off this ep. If Sam wanted someone tailing Benny, he should've had Garth do it and leave Martin to babysit Kevin. And then there's Dean. Dean, Dean, Dean . . . Making Sam think Amelia was in danger after what happened to Jessica?! Goddamn, that was cold! Gotta hand it to the writers. When you do think about it, when Sam messes up, Dean has a huge grudge over it and wouldn't drop it at all. Sam would also understand and try to make up for it. Dean on the other hand will mess up and cover it up with the same excuse or an excuse that doesn't justify the means. People may say that Sam was an arse for not giving enough time, but what if this was Amy, what if Sam pulled the Lisa and Ben card. Dean already made it clear that if anyone even Sam mentions their names ever that he would break his nose.

I liked Martin ever since we 1st saw him back in Sam, Interrupted and considering how peaceful (or maybe timid is a better word) he was then and how he had no desire to hunt or even do much in the investigation department back then, I've always found it hard to believe he would be that aggressive and persistent with Benny in this episode after he's been supposedly treated and deemed well enough to be released. If anything, he was more unstable here than back when we first met him. It reminds me of what they did with Anna in The Song Remains The Same and I just never bought it for either character. I also hate the way Sam used him in this episode and how neither Dean nor Sam really cared than an old friend of theirs was dead. I liked it back in the days when they struggled with ethical issues, but here they're acting more like demons, using people as a means to an end for their narcissistic purposes, than acting like the troubled good guys they're supposed to be. What Dean did is also shitty, but not anywhere as bad as what Sam did here. But I hate how both of them just write off Martin like he's worthless and have no guilt over his death. And what bugged me even more was Sam's attitude towards Benny---yeah he was a vampire but he had Dean's back the entire time in Purgatory while Sam just took the year off and didn't even bother looking for him or trying to find answers of where Dean & Cas could've gone after they killed Dick Roman. It's almost as bad as what he did to Lester in season 10 by having him go to Crowley to make a deal to kill his wife just so he could find Dean and ended up feeding Lester to Demon Dean himself to kill. These writers have no idea how bad they're portraying Sam with some of these plots.

I see a lot of people justifying what Dean did to Sam in the comments, and, I get how people feel about Dean. And I definitely get how people feel about Benny. I like Benny too and definitely didn't want to see him killed. But I also get where Sam was coming from. Initially, he was just setting someone who said they were good to watch and observe ONLY. He made that very clear. And you could see that he was trying to keep Martin reigned-in AND he gave Dean time to get things figured out. But when the facts weren't looking good, he looked at it like a hunter. I'm not going to try to claim that Sam didn't have SOME ulterior motives, but he wasn't going solely on them either. The thing is that what Dean did? That wasn't a spur of the moment thing. That wasn't a "Oh no, Sam and Benny might meet up and that's going to get ugly either way you dice it, what should I do? Um, how about this?" situation. He had to have set that up ahead of time. He had to have gotten into Sam's phone at some point when he wasn't looking and changed some numbers around. This wasn't just manipulative, but it was premeditated. And the thing is, Dean KNOWS Sam's history. He knows what happened to Jess and what that did to Sam. And he may justify it as "Just trying to get Sam off Benny's trail." but he knows good and well how panicked that kind of message would have made Sam. And how much trust he just broke with him.

Now I know I have some questionable morals sometimes. But I just cannot be angry or even disappointed in Dean for what he did, because I would have done the same thing. Sam deserved it and I'm glad he suffered because of it. Yes, Dean inflicted a bit of emotional damage. That's nothing compared to your brother being ready to murder one of your best and only friends even though you've expressed your trust in him multiple times, and he's done nothing but stay clean since he got out of purgatory. And also you said that it doesn't look good because one of Dean's friends has now killed one of Sam's friends. Martin was NOT Sam's friend, I don't think Sam even liked him.

I hate it when Sam and Dean fight ugh, they both did really bad stuff. Sam is not giving Dean the benefit of the doubt and trusting more in.. Martin who just has this black and white mentality, and he just doesn't listen :( that's why Dean sends that text ughh :( ... Sam refused to see things beyond what he believed was true while Dean was more open to see what was actually happening. Martin was completely horrible involving the girl and just having that mentality. Both Sam and Dean actually manipulated each other. Oh and I want to add that Martin thought he was doing the right thing.. even if it wasn't in reality, it was a really messy situation.

Dean didn't cross a line. Sam was being an annoying meathead not accepting that a vamp can be good even for a fact they encountered good vamps before in season 2 (The female vamp that Sam of all people advocated for). And Sam was being extremely reckless putting looney Don back in the field. Dean had no choice but to trick stubborn Sam.

What Sam did putting Martin on Benny was absolutely wrong but what Dean did to Sam was cruel Dean knew what Sam went threw after Jessica was killed so for him to do that was straight up wrong and cruel!!! Maybe Sams not jealous of Benny maybe he's hurt because Dean is his brother and he shows more respect and understanding for a vampire then he's ever shown his own brother!! About the message, let's get the full picture of what happened here. A some point, we don't know exactly when, but it is implied well before the episode, Dean took Sam's phone with the express intent of changing Amelia's number to the number of a burner phone in Dean's possession, "in case he needed it". This wasn't a snapshot, heat of the moment decision, this was a pre-planned weaponization of Sam's emotions and of some of his greatest fears re the people he loves dying, he says it himself "that what happened to Jess..." that is a real and clearly still very present fear in Sam and Dean knows this otherwise he wouldn't have been able to weaponize it in this manner. The fact that Dean had changed the number a "while back" proves that it had almost nothing to do with the Benny situation, he just took advantage of a weapon he'd already created. The only equivalent situation I can possibly fabricate would be if Sam had at some point decided that it might be useful for him to be able to fake a distress call from Lisa and/or Ben and for him to them employ that weapon when it suited him - can you honestly tell me you can envisage a situation in which Sam would ever do this?
