The “kind towards guests” thing is absolutely true!! I had a Muslim friend in high school, and her family ran a convenience store in our town. I used to work in a food delivery place with close to 20 Muslim coworkers. Let me tell you, during Ramadan, bringing my own food was a waste because they would demand I sit with them to eat, and they'd always have more than enough to go round the 6 or 7 people on shift that day. That was also the only time I've ever eaten some more traditional Sudanese and Libyan food. Absolutely amazing.

Same here! I'm an atheist too, but religion is such a deeply important thing to so many human beings. It's fascinating to learn about. Plus, I've been thinking a lot lately about how so often those of us from different creeds are talking about/want the same thing, we're just using different words for it. Different lens, but making observations about the same world. So much wisdom is lost if we ignore someone's observations just because they phrased it as "Allah wants [this]" or "Jesus would [do that]".

I ran into the ablutions issue years ago. I'm an atheist (and white/western) but well-educated, so I was aware of that aspect of Muslim life. Walked in on a woman in a library restroom washing her feet. Since she was wearing a hijab, I figured it was that, so I was very chill and said something like 'prepping for prayers?' For me, an atheist, the confusing part about Islam is that the "why?" is often left unanswered. Why is pork and alcohol forbidden? Why can you not hug or shake hands with the opposite gender? Why must you restrict yourself in so many ways? I understand that you believe in your religion, but how does restricting some of the most basic things (or at least what seems basic from my perspective) help fulfill you as a person? I don't mean to say that Islam is wrong or bad in its ways; I respect it and those who follow it. However, I still have this big question mark above my head because of the "why's".
@dakara_maАй бұрын
Just to give you a short answer: Everything that is harmful is forbidden in Islam. God knows us the best, that's why he also knows what is good or bad for us. We believe in that and thus avoid things that he made haram
@aunthuntАй бұрын
cause that's how to control people easily. people will have something to think about other than "why our leader is doing that or this". that's why religion exist. some people are quite comforted by imagined beliefs
@karig6441Ай бұрын
Pork is forbidden for the same reason it is in Judaism. In ancient times it was hard to cook pork properly and it would give people parasites, and they would get sick. So as part of the oral teachings of the Hebrew people, they made a list of the foods that made people sick when it was eaten, which became the list of non-kosher foods. Islam is based in the Abrahamic faiths, and that was likely just a carry over, or Muhammad just didn't like Porkchops.
@parafalarcomfernandeАй бұрын
@@dakara_ma Although this is kind of a challenging question, I don't mean to be hateful. But why doesn't it get updated ? I mean, we all know that pork and non-halal food are now a safe to eat. So are they haram? On the other hand, sugar, for instance, can be really harmful for our bodies. Also, why isn't sexism seen as a harmful thing?
@SF-hn5umАй бұрын
@@parafalarcomfernandeGiving the most neutral answer I can as an ex-Muslim, the Quran is supposed to be the "Final Revelation", hence why Muhammad is "the Last Messenger\Prophet", so nothing else is needed. The book is supposed to be the guide for humanity forever (I agree this is flawed logic). For the sexism thing, fully agree it's bad. It comes from a fundamental belief that men and women (with disregard for other forms of gender expression) cannot "just be friends" as in, left in a room together, the man and woman would instantly become romantic (even though plenty of men and women are just friends). The woman who made this video is certainly more on the conservative\traditionalist side of things (a few things she said tipped me off to that), as not all Muslims refuse contact with the opposite sex. But if I had to speak for this KZbinr, she would likely frame this "benevolent sexism" as coming from a place of care and concern for the well-being of Muslimas. Arguments I have heard from hijabis is that girls will not be harassed for their appearance if they are covered (which is not true, supported by statistics). Another I heard was a "pseudo-feminist argument" that if a woman is covered, then men can only judge her for her voice and her ideas (which my issue with this is that it is on the men to not see women as mere sexual objects, which practicing gender segregation only worsens). And if you REALLY want to split hairs, she is doing some haram stuff in the video. Depending on how traditional of a Muslim you are, the video is narrated by a woman, which can be viewed as fitna (as in it's enticing\distressing to men to hear a woman's voice. This is one reason the Taliban outlawed female singing, for example). She has also drawn people WITH faces, which some conservatives see as "playing God" because you are imitating the act of creation. And there is music in the video, which some Muslims are completely anti-music. The only good explanation I've seen for anti-music is that it is a controlling force that sways your emotions and may lead you to sin (ie sexually explicit dance music) Being neutral again, the reason for the restrictions is as she said, "we are not to question why Allah set these restrictions". It's a test of obedience. And the idea of temporary suffering for an eternal reward. What's funny is many of the things they restrict themselves from, are rewards in heaven (such as having many "pure companions" with the hooris). So that never sat right with me that the forbidden things on Earth are rewards in heaven. To me, this defeats the purpose of removing such desires in the first place

hi, i just wanted to say thank you for this. I'm not muslim, but i lived with most of my neighbors being muslim and they were so kind. They would always offer us food in the time of the Eid. I'm honestly in love with this food (especially the rolls of meat in vine leaf it's the best thing i've ever eat, and the pastries are soooo delicious). I've always been very understanding and respectful of their beliefs and traditions, but in France it's not really the case for most non muslim people... That's making me sad. Everyone should have the right to have their beliefs. Plus, even if i'm not muslim, i have some of the same habits (modesty, not drinking alcohol, being vegetarian, not touching anyone especially the opposite gender, etc). I'm even learning arabic because i really love the arabic culture and history. I wish people were more understanding. I had to deal with so many islamophobe people and i wish things were less... Tense between muslim and non muslim ? I met wonderful muslim persons, but also very bad and unrespectful persons. and vice versa. Why can't we just accept everyone ? It's sad really. But anyway to finish, thank you for explaining what alahu akbar REALLY meant, i had no idea (and since i'm french yeah, it was totally misused and you can't say that AT ALL)

bonjour! I find this comment heartwarming, especially the Arabic-learning part, it's challenging let me tell you, but I'm rooting for you, if you like animated shows there are many Arabic-dubbed cartoons and Animes that helped me personally to be fluent in modern standard Arabic, ask any Arab immigrant there about "spacetoon" and they'll show you what I mean haha

I think that the reason some people make a fuss aboutt the "distance from the other gender rule" (but not about someone saying they don't like hugs in general) may be because said people don't like being treated differently based on their sex or gender, especially when it comes to human expressions of affection. If someone said "I don't want to hug you because I don't like hugs" then I still feel I am being treated equally with everyone else, and not judged for an immutable characteristic, but if someone said "I don't want to hug you because you are a woman" then it would feel different.

My brother-in-law is Muslim, and it has never been an issue. We are in America and he is an immigrant from an Arab country. I'm quite sure he has hugged all the women in the family numerous times. Neither he nor my sister have ever pushed their religion on their daughters. (She's Jewish as am I; I am atheist and none of my family are super religious.) Now, one of their daughters, my niece, born and raised immersed in the American culture, has embraced Islam. She wears hijab. It was a bit of a surprise to us all (including her dad, I think) but it's fine. So I'm already on board, but I find this one point disturbing, for one reason. It so happens I am a transwoman. My transition was long before my nieces were born, and I told them about it when they were old enough to understand. It has never been a problem and we have a very loving relationship. (Also, both nieces were terrible huggers throughout their childhood, but now at college age, they've both become GREAT huggers, and I value this very, very much!) But now I have to wonder, might my niece ever adopt the no hugging rule? She's still young and working things out. She doesn't talk about her religious thoughts with us. The no hugging would be a shame, though it might not come up for our family since aside from her dad, we are all women, everywhere you look. But, then I inevitably have to ask, if she's so much more religious, and if she were to follow the rule about hugging, would she also follow some religious rule about trans people? And what would that rule be? I have no idea. But I would hate if she adopted the no-hugging rule, *_and_* somehow decided that I'm in the category of people she could not hug. That would be a tragedy. 😢 I would feel that religion had stolen my family. Judaism has the no touching rule, too, or something similar, but only for its most orthodox of adherents; I know men and women sit in separate sections of the synagogue. And I would guess that's the same in the Muslim world - that not all Muslim communities follow such a rule. I love people of all faiths, but this point reminds me how much I hate religion. (You know how some Christian fundamentalists say "love the sinner, hate the sin"? Well I guess I say "love the religious people, hate the religion".) Sorry for the long explanation but I had to get it off my chest, and I couldn't explain it without the details! Thanks for listening.

@@checkcommunity4moreinfo There is no such thing as a purely good or purely evil religion. This stands for ALL religions (Yes, even Satanism), so me saying that all Christian’s are bad would not be accurate of me. Some of these acts still being committed today. So, in my opinion, in general I think Christianity is a semi-toxic religion with good and bad people in it, there the bad people with usually speak louder than the good people. However if your asking whether I like to study it as much as other religions, then no. I have religious trauma surrounding Christianity and I’d very rather not delve deeper into it as I would other. But just to clarify, Islam is a religion in the language of arabic, but it is not an arab religion and there is no such thing as making arab culture a part of Islam. If something overlaps between the two, we are still just following our religion. We base our entire identity off of submitting to Allah and what his messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, tells us to live by. If Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him was white, that doesn't mean that we follow white culture now. I remember when a Muslim family moved in next door, it was honestly strange since they were always so kind and friendly. In my country everyone is pretty individualistic so it's not usual to become friends with your neighbours, the most interaction you will get will be just a wave or "hi!" every other month when you see them. So it was honestly pretty refreshing, I hope that family is doing well.

Another thing you should know: at 5:56 you can see the Arab transliteration of "Allah". "Why didn't she draw him?" That's because drawing Allah or other prophets like Muhammad is strictly forbidden, as an interpretation of a verse of the Quran. You can even notice this peculiarity in mosques, where you won't find any painting, portray, or human figures drawn at all, just names. So please be gentle with your Muslim friends and never show them drawings you made about Muslim holy figures nor ask them to draw them. And I'm saying this as an Atheist that respect any other belief.

I'm personally atheist, and I don't plan to change that, but it's always fascinating to hear what other people believe in. I'm of the opinion that everyone is allowed their own beliefs as long as they're not actively harming someone (on an individual level. I have some gripes with large religious groups, but not with people who are religious themselves, if that makes any sense.) I just find it really interesting to learn about people who live so different from me, either culturally or religiously. And I do my best to try and be respectful of anyone's beliefs ^^

@imshadowbtw8319 Let's debate, can you explain to me why is it wrong to hate a religion? Religions are ideologies, philosophies. I have the right to think that a certain ideology is wrong. I think that Islam is wrong, I don't hate muslim people, I hate their ideology and their values. Why can I say that I hate fascism but I can't say that I hate Islam? You don't have to respect every single Ideology.

@@SarahAsirii Do Muslims really have “tough skin”? When you consider the fact that anyone who too publicly “insults the prophet” is subject to a relentless and global campaign to murder them, it kinda looks like Muslims have the thinnest skin of all the major faiths… it’s basically on part with the worship of Kim Jong Un.
