Dalai Lama Stages of Meditation

Described by His Holiness as a key that opens the door to all other major Buddhist scriptures, Kamalashila's classic text Stages of Meditation has been revered by Buddhists of all traditions since its creation. Presenting the essence of the entire Buddhist Path to Enlightenment in 10 short chapters, Kamalashila's text places particular emphasis on calm abiding meditation and special insight. It demonstrates how carefully structured and conceptually informed meditation sessions serve as the bridge between the philosophical tenets of Buddhism and insight in the mind of practitioners. Over the course of five inspiring days, by reference to Kamalashila's text, His Holiness the Dalai Lama demonstrates how the nature of awareness, developed through meditative practices can be transformed into the direct perceptual wisdom necessary to achieve enlightenment itself.
The Stages of Meditation Teachings were beautifully filmed and recorded and have been re-produced, in its entirety, in a 10 DVD set. The DVD set includes the extraordinary Public Talk His Holiness gave in The Dome on Saturday June 14. The Public Talk was entitled 'Finding Purpose in Life'. The 10 DVD set includes full Chinese and Vietnamese translations of the full 21 hours.

Translation (from my pov) for those who have trouble with his English: We can change the way we see and experience reality, for the better. One way to do this, is to first be open to the idea of change by having an open mind to the fact that there are many ways of looking at things. Being open to experiencing and hearing all that is around us is better than ignoring things in preference of having one specific focus/story/belief. Change and transformation are intrinsic to nature, as well. He actually offers a sort of proof of this with his analogy of the calendar - which breaks down infinitely, until the point where we realize change happens so constantly and instantaneously that it IS nature (this has been looked at in Western math and Science via Physics and Math in the form of the study of infinitesimals (Gödel, etc.). Conclusion: If we hold only one viewpoint, we deny reality and nature - we bring suffering upon ourselves because we live in a vacuum. We become attached. Attachment is the cause of suffering. Just my 2 cents.

The story was reported in the Phoenix and Scottsdale (Arizona) newspapers, that some Tibetan Buddhist monks asked which hotel room the Dalai Lama had stayed in. When asked why by the concierge, the monks said, "So we can drink from his holy toilet bowl." You might google search the complete story. Strange but true!

Tibetan Buddhists may say one thing, but their actions reveal their true beliefs. Example: The Tibetan buddhist monks who travel the world, blowing long trumpets and wearing yellow rooster hats. When they arrived at their luxury hotel in Scottsdale AZ, they asked which one of those luxury hotel rooms had housed their leader, the Dolly Lama (aka dalai lama). When asked why, they said, "So we can drink from his toilet bowl." This was reported in the Scottsdale and Phoenix newspapers!

HH DL does not accept any money or gifts for his teachings. He has said many times, that he offers Buddha-Dharma teaching free of charge. with regards to the DVDs, these commercial sales are not by him. he doesnt involved in sales, profit etc. these are done by the organising committees or publishers for the benefit of students to hear, contemplate and as oral transmission. whenever HH DL gives a teaching, it is bcos someone had requested him. then that person or temple or buddhist centre will organise the entire events, including fund raising. They dont raise the funds for HH DL, but for their costs of renting a venue, for example, .. and other rental of audio visual equipts, etc.

I read a true story about a reporter who visited the Dolly Lama. He found the Dolly was looking at and playing with a small digital watch, totally fascinated by its construction and operation. Right there is the difference. The allegedly smartest and most brilliant man in Buddhism is totally amazed and awestruck by one of the most simple inventions of Western science. I refuse to worship him or his failed god.

This book is regarded as the holy text in Indian Buddhist community. Written by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the author of several hundred books and father of the constitution of India, this book is simply a peace of work. It details the time before Buddha's birth, the king system that was followed in those days, then how his birth was predicted by some elderly and educated rishi (a hindu monk), etc. In intricate details Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was able to go into day-to-day details of Buddha's life while he was growing up now knowing he was going to the Buddha one day. He proves to be the kindest while growing up with his cousins. He gets married to a beautiful princess Yashodhara and then gives birth to a child. This book uses another approach, another reasoning for him to leave the life of a king and be an ascetic. Usually people read the story of his locked in the palace and suddenly getting exposed to newborn, aged, sick and death scenarios which makes him very reluctant to be in kingly life. But in this book Dr. Ambedkar uses a very practical approach with the historical proofs behind the events that took place and led Siddhartha to renounce his kingdom and be an ascetic. It becomes even more interesting, when Dr. Ambedkar describes Buddha's attempts with several teachers who promise him the ultimate truths, but turn out to be kind of insufficient for him. Finally, he decides to work himself to find for the ultimate reasons for suffering. After attaining enlightenment, he has travelled throughout the north India, spreading his teachings and love. Book lists hundreds of events (angulimala, looters, hindu monks, lay people, kings, soldiers, etc) when he guides people for the truth inside rather than outside oneself. I can write another 2 pages on it, but I guess reading it would be a great experience for you.

@joscofe: Christianity today is secular anyway, because most of that stuff is not spiritual and has taken the word of God COMPLETELY out of context and tries to intellectualize it, IMPOSSIBLE. so called Christianity professes a trinity when i can disprove that doctrine with scriptures such as: 1 Tim 3:16, Isaiah 9:16, Isaiah 43:10, and too many to mention. So called Christianity believes that you can live any old way you want, but still say you love JESUS.
