Never believed that e-sports would have ever evolved the way it has. When I actually viewed the Peak All-Star Race recently, I have to be honest, it was more enjoyable than many of the real races that I've been to or watched. I've been involved in online racing going back to the Papyrus days, and iRacing is the optimum at this time. I was glad to hear Dale, Jr. say that he sometimes struggles on iRacing. Years ago, I was involved in racing (SCCA) club racing, and later on worked on a NASCAR Modified in the Northeast. Now at 72 years I still enjoy the competition of iRacing. Not very good at it, but compete in a Euro League in V8 Supercars. After all these years, still get that "twitch" before the green. Thanks for putting this podcast together. It was extremely informative and interesting. Hope it continues!

This was great and very informative of the evolution of sim racing. I remember very well when nascar racing came out for the CPU and how realistic the game was. Before I went to college in the late 90s and became an auto tech. I learn a lot of the terminology of a vehicle thanks to THEE game. Suspension terms like camber, caster and toe and what each thing did to affect the handling charateristics of a car. What heat expansion in tires did over time creating different aspects of tire wear. Calculating and estimating fuel milage. Etc. One of the most memorable moments I had was when I was trying to refine my race setup at Michigan. So when I went Michigan international speedway for the nascar race in '97. I was on otherside of the fence along pit row asking the tire guys of the gm goodwrench crew what kinda tire psi they would be running that day on the right side as to the left side while the race is progressing as the track and air temps increases during the day... Mind you I was like 16, 17 years old at the time and taking notes in my binder titled "chassis setups" ...They were kinda shock of the technical questions I was asking then one of them asked me "why you wanna know?"...my reply "it's just for my nascar racing game I'm playing. I'm try to run better lap times while trying not to overheat my right front tire."...

Back in the late 90's there was online racing using NASCAR Online by Papyrus. Everyone paid $15 / month for a dial up connection to TEN online. NASCAR even sanctioned a championship in 1998. I used to stay up till 4 in the morning racing other guys including Dale Jr. He was a Bush driver then and I recall we spent several days racing Watkins Glen so that Jr. could try to get used to the track prior to his Bush race. He even mentioned it to ESPN reporters after qualifying pretty well considering he had never raced there.

And though the setups may be somewhat limited on iRacing, you can still input values close to a real-world setup, get a feel for how it will handle, and know what adjustments can be made to improve, so yeah, it's definitely possible to test on a platform like iRacing.

Its awesome that the sims are so lifelike. But I watch the videos, and all of the drivers are comm'd up, and whining back and forth. It's a hen house of people complaining and swearing. NASCAR and the networks are pushing a friekin video game as if it's the real thing. Drivers overcoming 3 hours of grueling heat, vibrations, muscle fatigue, hydration issues, etc. to be compared to these people sitting in a comfortable chair with drinks nearby, air conditioning etc? Give me a break. It's a video game. Yes, good for drivers to practice. Bad for an industry trying to sell it as similarities.
