The rivalry between the Hendick No. 24 and the RCR No. 3 was one for the ages, but was it all to be what it seemed? Ray Evernham reveals details from that time that left Dale Jr. mind-blown.

Dale Sr. and Gordon fans were the only ones that hated each other. Dale and Jeff had massive respect for each other but they were just 2 completely different personalities so people just wanted to separate them that way.

Jeff did talk about Dale Sr talking to him about how they both could make money by being sponsored by opposing brands- Like Sr with Coke & Jeff with Pepsi… Edit: they played up the on track rivalry & it worked!

They might've had a couple run-ins with each other on the track, (like one time where Dale intentionally wrecked Jeff at Pocono or Martinsville, I think, and when they had their run-in in the '97 500) but yes, they usually had a lot of respect for each other. Those Earnhardt fans though, they're something else. Only people I can think are more toxic are the Disney Cultists and Family Guy Cultists.

Dale Jr's dad would be sooo proud of his son today. Not just for his racing (that too) but because what Dale Jr. does for this sport. His insight, influence and programs like this too. Great stories of the hay days past, his interest in forgotten speedways - that series was amazing - and almost anything Dale does that involves the sport and his passion for it just adds to the interest and enthusiasm for the fans. As always, Dale thanks for doing this on our behalf...

Lucky - Dale would say this : "Hell - I set everything up for him - if it wasn't for his sister he'd be pushing a broom for Jeremy Mayfield - " Now that may be a little harsh but it's funny - And it's sounds like something the Old Man would've said - Hell he cussed me like a dog when I was a 19yr old kid !

Dale Earnhardt owned an apparel company called Sports Image and he saw Gordon coming.. He signed Jeff for his merchandising contract.. That’s why there always seemed to be a feud between the 3 and 24 even though they truly were friends and liked each other.. Plain and simple.. To sell t-shirts.. Dale Earnhardt was not only an incredible driver.. He was extremely smart.. I was fortunate enough to get to goto DEI just after they built the big shop.. They talked about this during the tour after Dale was killed.. He designed the layout of DEI.. A truly incredible man and terrible loss in so many ways..

No Andy didn't take it that far. He said they talked every Monday morning and traded notes. He said if Dale or Childress had known he would have been fired. He was employed by RCR when he did the show and said that it would probaly still piss Childress off. It wasn't an alliance between the teams, it was a partnership between the two friends. There was respect but everyone wanted to win.

Sometime in the mid 90s I guess I went to the Richard petty driving experience, Right down the road was Hendrick motor sports. They had an open door so you were able tour the facility. About halfway through the tour I see Evernham walking down some stairs, he looks at me and makes a beeline. Stops in front of me and says, “You’re wearing a Bill Elliott shirt at Hendrick motor sports” you know we have a gift shop right? And kinda smiles, I said well, I like Bill Elliott, he looks at me and says, so do I, Bills a great guy then proceeds to take a picture with me, lol. The guy was super cool and of course a couple years later started his own team with Elliott as his driver. I thought that was pretty cool. Been an Evernham fan since that day….

I think Tony Stewart’s first year, might have a been a night race, the 24 caught up to him, made him a little loose and the 20 slipped up to the outside line, Jeff passed him , but Sr was in the outside line a few lengths behind and made Tony loose and sent him on to the wall. It was just funny that neither apparently wanted to deal with the rookie that day, and Jeff just passed him up to Dale to put him into the wall.

I was working at Hendrick doing electrical work on Gordons first shop. I was standing there with Ray and my boss when some race fans walked up with their little boy looking to get an autograph from someone. My boss told Ray to sign his toy car. Ray said " Im nobody" and kinda blushed. He signed the toy car. At the time I didnt even know who Ray was . I had watched the IROC series but didnt know Ray was responsible for setting up all those cars.
