Yes! My mom use to send barrels of stuff back to Dominica back in the 70s up until the 90s. These barrels would take up space in the living room before the shipping company comes and get them. I was always scared growing up that we would have a fire and get stuck behind these stupid barrels.

I've been there and many other islands and must say, it's a double edged sword! No opportunities, comes begging! I'm pretty sure if there were many more opportunities there'd be less begging! Tread lightly

My parents left Jamaica and settled in the UK. My mother sent for the children she left behind, but many didn't. Many left children and parents behind, so yes they should send money home.

They have the craziest sob stories and pretend like your money grows on trees. It's infuriating to give then come to find out they spent it flossing.

And the worse thing is their quality of life is better than you who is abroad ,tell them you lost your job and it will take a few months to send back any money , if they don't call you , just know they are surviving

So you rather pay bills to a corporation (Electric Co, Bank etc) before feeding yourself? NEVER, EVER, EVER do this!! Feed yourself first. Always. (I'm talking about necessities, not luxury items)

I would agree to disagree to say when Jamaicans come here they arent struggling. They are on some sense because most dont get educated how to spend wisely. And some use credit card like whoa. Until they realize they gotta pay it back. Before i filed for my mother i sent her money when she needed it, and i would be honest and say when im done paying bills what ever i have left ill send. Now she comes here and working herself she realize that its whole different ball game whnlen it came to paying bills and taxes and having to learn how to use touch phone and computer at work.

I agree. Sending $50 a week like he said in the example, can be a lot for people, $200 a month is a big outgoing! Unless you have a professional class job when you arrive, I don't see how someone just coming would be able to spare that much like it's nothing.

I somewhat agree, the inputs that make a person independent and opportunities are less yes but there's a engrained belief by many that nothing can be accomplished in these circumstances and cultures because they see the migrants who return with resources not knowing how those resources or acheived. There is also a reluctance by many to support themselves and make a foundation but only get from others, squander and leech. Whatever it is it's entitlement mentality because some will blatantly tell you that they won't do the menial jobs that lots of migrants are doing to earn the same money they beg.
