NASCAR legend Ricky Rudd recalls his rocky relationship with Dale Earnhardt Sr. on the latest episode of the Dale Jr. Download. The two were good friends until a ride swap ended their friendship abruptly and the two didn't reconcile for years. Rudd shares how he never got close to any other drivers after that, how the two tangled at North Wilkesboro that nearly resulted in a riot and how they eventually buried the hatchet on their disagreements.

Truly because Ricky wants it that way. He is on his own time. He wants to be retired in the truest sense. No commitments whatsoever. If he randomly wants to do something he will do it. If he has something planned and the time comes and he doesn't want to he simply doesn't. Just a care free I do what I want when I want type of thing. One of the lucky ones that can do that. I really feel that is why DW stepped away from broadcasting. He just wants to step away from any real commitments.

Ran into him at Patrick Ford in Fayetteville NC one day and happened to be wearing my DJ #88 QC Jacket and damned if he didn't offer to sign it for me. When Rick Rudd won at Martinsville in 1998 in the Tide car he was absolutly drained and exhausted but kept on going to win the race. In pit lane they had to interview him lying down because he was so exhausted. I will never forget that. I think all Nascar fans that have watched the sport from when it was a southern sport wish it was like it was back then. There are so many things to complain about where do you even start. It’s a good thing we have KZbin so that you can watch old races and reminisce about the days of old. Because the good old days of Nascar are long long long gone....

Good story. Rudd was my favorite driver, primarily when he was sponsored by Tide. My dad was a P&G engineer, hence the connection. Met Rudd in Cincinnati one year. It was a highlight for me! Thanks for posting this Junior!

Funny story, true story. 1989, 9 years old, first family vacation. Car broke down in MN and me and my dad fell in love with rudd and the tide car in the cozy rest motel over dq burgers and sundaes. One of my favorite memories.

In 1989 Rudd was driving the Quaker State Buick. He didn't drive for Tide until 1991 with Rick Hendrick first, and then his own Ford team in '94.

@Thomas Miller that makes sense for me. Because it wasn't a few years later my old man started watching religiously and he was all for Brett and the quaker state car while I was rooting for rudd in the tide...but I had remembered the name rudd being talked about in the motel room. That actually straightened that all out for me. Thanks!

Excellent interview. Junior, there is a gold mine of this stuff I'm just starting to tap into. So glad to hear these two worked things out. I most enjoyed at around 4:07, the tacit acknowledgement that if you were running good that day, Dale would spin you early so he wouldn't have to deal with you later. Yep. This is like that NASCAR legends tape when DW says anyone who Cale hit, raise your hands and everybody raised their hands

I was a nascar fan in the early 80s I lived in Pennsylvania so Watkins and Pocano were races closer to home I moved to Mooresville NC in 2002 and still followed Nascar but not like the old day's. One day I was at lake norman state park riding mountain bike and met up with Ricky. This was a real treat for me as I followed him back when he raced. We are the same age and we visited for awhile, he was real nice acted just like any normal guy up there riding. I moved back to PA in 2016 to retire, I miss running into these guys I used to follow. Living in Mooresville (Lake Norman) I'd run into drivers from time to time. Very cool memory.

I was stationed at the Charleston Naval Station from 88-91. I went to every Cup race I could during this time period. My friend and I were at the 89 North Wilkesboro race where Dale and Ricky spun as Bodine drove underneath for the win. It was delayed a week due to Hurricane Hugo. The two cars parked on pit road in front of us. The crews went after each other and beer cans were raining down!! Someone even threw a beer during the race and it hit a windshield!! I wish that this track will get back on the schedule along with Rockingham. Great show, Jr!!
