Relive the conversation everyone is talking about -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ken Schrader rehashing the week that featured beer, nudie magazines, gun sales, hitch-hiking, Bibles, and a pissed-off father. This video highlight also includes one of the most emotional moments in our show’s history - Dale Jr. reading a letter he wrote to Schrader about his loyalty and friendship in the wake of Dale Earnhardt’s death.

The fact that Kenny is still this visibly shaken up by the mere mention of that day means that what he saw was beyond anything we'd ever believe to be true. Kenny is a very strong, brave and gentle man to carry that memory with him. He could've easily told people what he saw and likely received money for it, but he didn't. Ken Schrader is the definition of a true friend and man. He didn't tell anyone out of respect for his friendship with the Earnhardt family, nor did he want to place the emotional burden on the Earnhardt fan base. It is a natural thing I feel many who follow the sport have, I guess they view seeing Dale in that state would provide closure, but we all know it wouldn't. For the longest time, I had those desires, but I no longer carry them because 1) it is not respectful to Dale 2) The greatest memory we could ever have of someone is the joy we cherish in their life, not their death. Dale Earnhardt is an inspirational figure to me, and I feel the best thing I can do for him is to maintain the image of him as this larger than life person, not as a corpse. I share in Dale's assessment, Thank You Kenny for keeping it a secret.

Ann Schrader said once that Kenny saw something he never wanted to see and something he would never forget. I could name about a dozen different drivers who would have spilled their guts to the press and not put their name on it. Schrader is a man of honor and I respect him even more for keeping that secret.

James Scully I still remember watching Kenny waving to the safety crew to hurry to the scene, then turn around and stumble away. Right then I knew Dale was hurt really bad and I was sick to my stomach. I thought about how horrible it must’ve been for him to see his friend in a condition I can’t even think about. God bless you Kenny and Jr. for that. Been a long time coming.

Budd Wolf 1966 ... Kenny knew the wreck was serious but he had also seen Dale in far worse wrecks and basically walk away. So when Kenny went up to Dale’s car, he was probably thinking Dale is banged up and that’s it. He saw something totally different. He lost a true friend that day and he honored his friend in the best possible way. And for that... My respect for Mr. Kenny Schrader will never waiver.. I’d like to sit around a campfire and drink a few cold ones with Kenny.. I bet he’s a hoot and can tell a few funny stories.

In addition to being a very classy guy, he can be funnier than any comedian I can think of when the time is right. I once listened to Kenny, Mike Skinner & his wife Angie on a satellite broadcast of the NASCAR CHANNEL. Those three could take that act on the road!! @@RawJa777 Kenny was THE guy that NEEDED to be the one. There was a ton of respect off track between those two, to the point that Dale trusted him with his son for a week on the road. Kenny kept his mouth shut on the TV interview right after, never told a soul about what he saw inside that race car and has done nothing but support that family ever since that day (and frankly before)... If it had been a younger driver, we wouldn't have had that. And it's not their fault, they didn't have that relationship with Dale and his family. But Kenny did, and that's one of the very small blessings in disguise of that tragedy.
@RawJa777

@@FloridaManRacer Totally agree. It's almost unfathomable that it was Kenny who was involved and it is indicative of his character that he has resisted the urge to share details. It's really nobody's business - I say that as I'm thinking about it and talking with a stranger about it. Crazy. Dale Earnhardt was my best friend's favorite driver - I was a Ford guy and rooted against him my whole life. Didn't like the way he drove either...thought he was dirty. It was really hard when he died though and, to tell you the truth, felt like my childhood died a little that day too. Nascar has never really been the same.

I feel so bad for Ken, knowing how close him and Earnhardt were, and having him be the first one to the car after the accident just kills me because you know what he saw in that car wasn't good. I think he knew when he saw him that he wasn't gonna make it. I still remember the night it happened, I was home by myself, my parents were at a friend's house watching the 500. We had dial up internet and I spent 30 minutes trying to find updates on his condition before they said he had passed. I called my mom and told her and I heard her telling the folks around her that he didn't make it and hearing all those adults just break down still gets to me. As far back as I can remember we were an Earnhardt family to the core. My dad passed 2 weeks ago and it makes me feel a little better than he gets to see Dale again now

I'm a CPA. Years ago, the CEO of an audit client had previously worked as an accountant for the Hendrick organization. He had a picture on his wall of the 1994 (I think) driver lineup consisting of Terry Labonte, Jeff Gordon, and Ken Schrader. He told me about once attending an outdoor picnic-type event for Hendrick employees and families. He said that Labonte and Gordon were surrounded the entire time but he and his wife were with the Schraders for awhile. He would totally agree with the other comments here about how nice Ken was.

Went from laughing to weeping to smiling. What a conversation to have watched. I am 44 years old,I'm from a nascar family the day it happened and it was announced he was dead my mom cried with me because Dale sr. was my hero. He was the thing me an my dad bonded over each weekend. I couldn't imagine what it was like for the 1st and 2nd place driver seeing this unfold before their eyes. Seeing their owner and father to one pass away this way. And for a close friend to see also. It would be terrible, I could never imagine .😔

Inside Winston Cup is the show you speak of. It was usually a hilarious recap of the previous weekend's race with all three drivers masterfully laughing at themselves and the other on track incidents. Kenny Wallace guesting on the show took it to another level. One of the funniest things on the show I recall was Schrader describing the scene as he put the 36 M&Ms car on its roof and slid for a long distance. He says "Here's where I turn the M&M car into the W&W car" I remember howling at that comment.....

Was able to meet Schrader on several occasions and he is the nicest man you will ever meet. Always took the time to have a conversation with me no matter how busy he was. One of my greatest memories was meeting him at an Oakwood Homes event in Dover Delaware in 91. I was at the race at Dover where he won his final cup race and was able to sneak into winners circle to watch him and his team celebrate. I remember him looking over to me and my dad and giving us a thumbs up. I was 12 years old and will never forget that day

He does this better than the live TV racing, I prefer to watch Jr on this like this 3 day's a week. He's great on this stuff. Kenny was special on here yesterday, it's gonna go down as the best one yet. Oh yeah Dale Jr. Don't want the wife to see this or hear this, now my memory has gone to the bad place, when all the strippers cum out to you, you know what goes down, yup and it wasn't huns going down now, then your drinking with Carl Edwards dad, that's also pretty cool. I'd rather here stories like this than watch him broadcast live NASCAR. This should be on live every week before each RACE with guests to come, there's over a 100,000 stories easy I bet. This can help NASCAR with TV watching but also have this live in public so the fans can see it live too, I bet many would buy tickets just to see this at many places. Also you must bring Kenny back on, he's great interviewer, he opened up Dale like I've never seen before. Kenny and Dale has a great relationship and brings the life to Dale Jr like he once was before, this is the Jr I remember now. Awesome Job !

Outside the story of “The Week” one of the funniest conversation I ever heard was Kenny talking to Rick Hendrick about his motors and Ricks motors. As the story goes our at least I remember Kenny said he was wheeling a fresh engine out of the engine shop on a dolly and Rick comes walking over and asks what he is doing and Kenny says I taking my motor out to my truck and Rick says you mean you taking my motor out to your truck and you know how much one on my motors cost Kenny says No Boss your motor is sitting right over there and it runs just fine I tested out for you just to be sure and returned it to pick up my motor I left here. The moral of the story is as long as the engine is fresh and makes lots of power it’s Kenny’s motor but when it’s leaking oil and wore out its Ricks engine.

I’m crying. Beautiful words for Kenny Shrader. I think what Kenny seen when he looked in that window of Dale Sr race car that day was something that was truly hard to see. Really shook Kenny up and will for the rest of his life so it had to be a bad scene to see. To know instantly that Dale Sr was in trouble and that no amount of help can come faster than fast and that it was not good at all. Injuries that you can’t walk away from. Kenny Shrader is a good guy. Glad he was there for Dale Jr and Dale Sr too.

Wow Jr., you got a tear in my eye over your words for Schrader. I watched that wreck on TV like so many others did. Rooting for your dad on race day was the common bond between me and my dad at that time. I lost my father this past July. Though we never agreed on much, I know that not much would have been said between us had he heard your words for Schrader. You said what was in both our hearts and there's no point to arguing about it. Plus we would have had a laugh or two on the other stories told. Thank you.

Between 1988 and 1994, I had the wonderful experience of talking to Dale on several occasions. Somehow it came out that we both were born on the same year but 1 month apart, him being the elder. He was complicated, a blend of that quiet, knowledgeable man and that powerhouse on wheels. We shall not see his like in my lifetime, but hopefully will down the road. I was watching the Daytona 500 some years ago, with my son, who had just gotten out of the Army. The race was almost over when the impossible happened. We just sat there with tears in our eyes, saying nothing (There was nothing to say) Neither I or my son have watched another NASCAR race since. (4-23-20)
