I met Dale Sr 3 times in my life. First time was in 1998 at Atlanta motor speedway with my dad, down in the pits on the day of qualifying. He shook my hand and spoke to me for a couple minutes about why I liked racing. The second time was at the Atlanta auto show in 1999, and I suspect he recognized my father (6 '7 300+ pounds, pony tail and big handlebar mustache...he stands out in any crowd) because he hollered out to us to come over and say hi. The third time was a month before the Daytona 500 wreck that took his life. My cousin had somehow managed to meet Dale Jr and started dating him, and I got invited to go to a cookout at the Earnhardts hunting/fishing property. I won't pretend like we were friends, but somehow out of all the faces Sr ever saw and hands he shook and people he met...he managed to remember some scrawny little kid every time. At first I like Sr because my dad did, then I liked Sr because I thought he was a badass, then I loved Sr because he was a genuine guy and never tried to be anything he wasn't.

A quick little story. In through the 90's I lived on Brumley Road about 1 1/2 from DEI, in Mooresville NC. We had a barn fire and the fire department came to put it out, as is customary an Ambulance was dispatched as well. It was a beautiful black ambulance with very small letters at the bottom of the fender said "This vehicle and equipment donated by Dale Earnhardt. Thanks again Dale.

Neat story. Barn fires are no joke.Our neighbors in Wisconsin barn went up a month or so after haying season back in the 70s and even almost 4 miles away it peeled the paint off our house and set fire to their house and 2 othes near a mile away. They got out what animals they could even while getting burned themselves and til it burnt out all you could do was watch...from far away.. Dale ended up a fine man and a great racer and was my favorite.He left this world with more than he took and made a lot of people happy. RIP #3

Did you notice how I said great racer and not great father? I know he wasn’t a good father. I watched Kerry say he was given up for adoption and doesn’t like talking about those years his biological father wasn’t in the picture. Kelley and Dale Jr’s stories about how he wasn’t there for most of their childhood, because of him racing. Like their high school graduation, and the story of both of them being sent military school. Dale Jr talking about trying his best to make his father proud of him and failing many times. He yearned for his father’s attention and hardly ever got it. Dale Sr was a very strict disciplinarian type father. He was a great racer, but a terrible father. Always know it alls on here for fuck sake. I admire the driver accomplishments of him, but the parent aspect of him, I despise.

Don't remember the specific race, but Nascar black flagged Dale for a move he made that spun the guy, came in the pits hot- this was before speed limits- and went back out and won that race. Never seen anything close to that determination since.

One of my favorite Earnhardt moments was at Daytona and NASCAR was giving Dale hell about his front spoiler all week. Dale finally passed inspection but on the warm up laps of the race Dale mashed the front end of his his car all up in the rear of the car in front of him then got on the radio and said boys, I fixed the spoiler. Lol

My uncle worked closely with Dale as his personal cameraman in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. They definitely earned each other’s respect. At first, my uncle said Dale didn’t really want to waste time getting pictures and video and stuff like that that they had to do for NASCAR promos, but my uncle just told him, “This is my job. I have to do my job, just like you have to do yours.” Dale really warmed up to him after that and began to ask for my uncle whenever he needed a personal cameraman for interviews or other promo materials. It made my uncle so sad, and so many others around the world, when Dale ran his last race, but damn if he didn’t go out doing what he loved. Fantastic racer. It looks like nothing from the stands sometimes, but picturing yourself in one of those cars-the adrenaline rush must be insane. These guys put their lives on the line for the sport they love.

Yea, he won a lot of races and was fearless. He also spun out many a driver “accidentally”. Rules let him get away with it. Many a gentleman driver won more races.To date, he has 38% of the Kings wins. Actually # 8 for wins. Rubbin is racing is part of what I used to enjoy, watching NASCAR. bumping to spin, not so much. Like all professional sports, NASCAR chased the money and ruined it. Owners choice, I get it but I don’t have to be a consumer.

I stopped watching after dale was gone and lots of Drivers got old and retired , But I got tickets to Dover race last year and started watching it again . I grew up thinking NASCAR was SO boring. But I do remember how much my parents loved Earnhardt, especially my dad, and how crushed they were when Earnhardt died. Now, over 2 decades later, I find myself revisiting his race highlights and thinking fondly of all the “boring” races I watched growing up and what it really meant to my parents. RIP! Every year when I was watching the Daytona 500. I would always say Dale Earnhardt Sr would win. Something would go wrong from flat tires to running out of gas to getting caught in an accident on the last lap. When he finally won the Daytona 500. The main reason that racing was so great during these times was the fact that the cars were not plastered to the track. Look how high off the track these cars sit. That allows air flow underneath the car and virtually eliminates the "aero racing" that you see today. These cars relied on horsepower for speed- not aerodynamics. This made for the incredible racing you saw during this era.

I've always had a close connection with nascar throughout my whole life, and especially dale, my grandpa was the biggest dale earnhardt fan I knew, he had everything from diecasts, to jackets, to signed pictures, he had it all, he loved earnhardt more than any racer, I had never been into nascar before he died, but once i started getting into it, I felt closer to him that i had ever before even though he was gone, and even though dale is gone too, dales racing and nascar is what keeps me connected to him.

Let me just say that there were so many "antics" that he was known for, even by the other drivers that he wrecked or "rattled", even they couldn't hate him. The tragic death of Dale Earnhardt was the end of NASCAR for me. Even if Dale Earnhardt did not win, he made the race exciting. Dale Earnhardt was the epitome of racing. Nascar hasn't been the same since. Rest in 5 Earnhardt.

there was no other driver like him, nor will there ever be...he was so good, that if they just got the car CLOSE, he would bring it home first....they say he could SEE the air comin' off the cars around him......I don't know about that to say yes or no, but I watched him from his first Winston race, to his last...I was watching when he hit the wall. the sport lost a true Giant of a Competitor, and when he wasn't in a race car, a true Gentleman....Thanks for the memories Dale......OnWard......

Daytona 500 2001, with his team in front of him Dale knew what his job was, Protect his son and Mikey with everything he had, and he did just that. The intimidator put up a wall and he held off 38 cars by himself and the last thing this absolute legend saw was his son and Mikey with nothing but open track ahead to the finish One of the final things he said to his son on the radio was "Stay with him, stay with Mikey"

I'm proud to be able to say I was ornaments n 79 and by 88 I watched each race. That was my super hero then n I'm sure to many of us.. no dale Jr couldn't race like his dad, but his Ole man would be proud of him and the man he's become!! We miss ya dale #3d.Earnhardt fan for life

Being a born and raised west coast kid I’ve never really been into Nascar. Something about Dale tho,I tear up watching him race and knowing his story. Even if I’m too young to have even seen his races he’s a big inspiration for me and felt him hard when he said he’s happiest behind the wheel of a racecar. Number 3 on this list is the best driving you will ever see!! Amazing will to win. Bill obviously had a better car but dale was not going to let him around. Bill got into him 5 or 6 times sent him to grass and he never lost the lead. Amazing!!!

Miss these days. After he passed and the interdiction of Toyota Nascar went down hill. I haven't watched a race since 2005. That Daytona win was freakin awsome. Daytona eluded Dale for years. Loved how everybody lined up to congratulate him.

My favorite Daytona 500 was when Dale finally won it. So sad he's gone now. I can only imagine how the racing world would be if he was still around. At least safety was improved after his death, so something good came of it.

Greatest driver in my lifetime. Watch the 2000 Wiston 500 at Talladega superspeedway. The 76th. Win amazing job. Hard to believe it's been 20 years . Dale was my favorite. Rest in peace Dale Earnhardt , The Intimidator!!!! Thank you for all the memories.
