I stopped at the drive thru on the way home and got tacos. When I got home I opened KZbin on my phone as I sat down to eat. I clicked on this video and by halfway through it I was crying. My dad died in a car wreck when I was 5. I was to young to know him or even remember him. I was watching when Dale Sr died, blocking for Michael and Jr. I was crushed knowing Dale was right there when his dad died. Crushed. This discussion made me feel some of that again, as if it was fresh. I love this podcast. These Earnhardts are a treasure.

As part of the safety crew on "that day", this interview hit me hard! After I cut the roof off & saw Sr. being pulled out, I knew immediately that we had lost a legend 😔 Because of this incident, many drivers owe their lives to Dale Sr. because of the safety measures that were put in place by NASCAR. Thanks for sharing that Vic. I can only imagine how the events of that day affected you and remains carved in stone. With what you’ve seen and experienced at that specific time will forever be with you. Never having the opportunity to have met Dale Sr. I was a serious fan of his back in the day and will always be. Long before his last race Dale was always NASCAR to me. I remember there were many races I had to miss because of work, actually duty since I was on active duty at the time where weekends were just like any other day you worked. As with most of the time it was without having a TV or radio around. However I remember as soon as I got off and found someone that had watched the race I would always inquire, “how did Earnhardt finish”, instead of the usual how did the race go? With that you can probably guess the major effect that day had on me and about NASCAR.

I think Dale understands the feelings that so many of us had for his dad. Thank-you for letting us in this way. My wife and I was traveling the night Jr. won Daytona we listened to the race on the radio. The last few laps I pulled over and my wife and I just set there and looked at each other when he won. We couldn't talk. That was an important night for a lot of folks. Big E will never be forgotten in this house.

Dale Earnhardt gave life to the 3. That's the main difference. People called it: The Black Number 3, and it was Earnhardt behind the wheel. A storied history. It had meaning. I think that's why so many of us are still bothered. I know it may sound silly, people say "it's just a number" but it was more than that. It's always felt awkward seeing it on track since Dale died. During this time l had just got home from the hospital in Goldsboro. I had an operation and couldn't sleep in the bed. I watched the race in a recliner and that's where I had to sleep for over a year. After the race I went to sleep because of the medication I was on. The next morning my wife came in the den and was talking about how sad it was about Dale. I asked what do you mean and that's when I found out what had happened. I remember Michael on the roof of his car celebrating and remember seeing Schrader going to Dale's car. The wreck didn't look that bad on TV. I went to sleep and l just couldn't believe when she told me the next morning. My wife just assumed l knew what happened. Oh man what a terrible shock. NASCAR has never been the same. So so sad for you and all your family ❤️🙏

The baseball car was flying that night, I think the whole racing world stood still when you came to the front and won it. I was screaming at the top of my lungs "COME ON JUNIOR" for every car you passed and when you crossed that finish line I cried like a baby. Hearing Ned Jarrett say he was speechless as he choked tears and then seeing you and Michael on the roof of the car hugging really was the best part, thanks for that moment and God Bless

Thinkn and talkn about that Daytona race...it was my very first NASCAR race I watched start to finish. It was my senior year of highschool. Of course I knew who Dale Sr was and I was immediately a Dale Jr fan. I was so excited because those DEI cars were running so well. It was my first emotional connection to NASCAR or any driver...i cried at the end of that race. I felt terrible for the family and for the teams. 20 yrs later and I still can connect to those moments as if it happened yesterday.

So reminded me of my father’s sudden death. I received word he was in the hospital, I knew it had to be bad, had a gut feeling. I don’t remember my 15 mile drive only that I drove a 1/2 mile going the wrong way on a one way street. The 3 days in the hospital before his death are snap shots and short memories. The hard part was I had to make the calls to friends I knew my dad would like to say goodbye to.

I dunno maybe, there’s something wrong with me… I know people don’t want to relive that day… but to hear different perspectives and tidbits of info from Dale Jr., Danny, Kenny, etc. about what happened makes me feel like another page turned, getting closure to complete the book. As a selfish fan, I give them so much respect for even discussing it because I honestly think that guy basically threw the weight and grief of the whole racing world on his shoulders. I was just a young kid getting ready to deploy (April 01’)… but I remember so much about that day. It still sucks to think about it, as a fan… but to be his son, or brother, or friend… and for Jr. to come out the other side a better person after all of that and still share it. That’s incredible, that takes guts, it takes big a$$ balls to look at that say I’m still racing, I’ll carry the load for my dad, I’m not gonna give up, I’m not gonna fail. As just a young punk kid close to his age and not really have it figured out yet… if there’s a reason this guy is going to HoF, that’s it. End of story. Period. He did what no one else could, and kept the sport vibrant, when even Superman would have trouble carrying that load. Credit where credit is due, Kerry, Kelley, Dale Jr., his family, RCR, DEI… they all held there head high and plowed forward. That’s what makes it so tragic but so incredibly special.

I was at Daytona in February, and that's one of the first time I seen my dad cry, and we didn't talk the whole ride home. I got to interview Jr in 2001 at the all star festivities in Seattle, WA. Some "sports" guy asked if the race was fixed and Dale Jr read that man the riot act. I bet Dad was proud!! 2001! They craziest year on record!
