"Never the same" because NASCAR was finally forced to join other racing forms and require more stringent safety equipment and procedures - like those required by even more potentially dangerous vehicles like Formula 1 cars. The very equipment and procedures Earnhardt disdained.

I remember going to an ARCA race at Kentucky Speedway, less than 6 months after Dale died. The race started, and on lap 3, the whole track became absolutely silent, except for the sound of the cars. And every fan, myself included, held their hands high, three fingers extended toward the sky. Every one of us stayed silent, our hands up, until the lap counter tuned over from 3 to 4. Tens of thousands of people came together without a word of discussion, without even knowing it was going to happen, all giving a silent, unplanned salute to a beloved lost legend. It was a really profound, emotional moment. Dale's passing left a hole in the sport that will never be filled.

Yes. I used to take my son. Who was ten then. To Pocono. Same thing. I still have the #3 commemorative hats we bought that day. Also. I used to park in the infield. Theres an infield SCCA track that comes out onto the main track at the beginning of the main straight and goes the wrong way. Thats how they had us exiting. I had a black Yukon GT with aftermarket exhaust. I laid back until traffic got way ahead and I nailed it... coming out of the infield onto the main track foot to the floor...throwing dust in the air... all the drunks in the bleachers there stood up and were cheering... Standing O for the black GMC... My son will remember that for the rest of his life...

I remember that day all too well. My Direct TV receiver had gone south so my girlfriend and I watched the race at a local sports bar in Greensboro NC. We saw the wreck and and the finish, and didn't really think too much about it. I had seen Dale in crashes this bad or worse before and he had turned out fine. Then about 7PM or so, one of my friends called me and broke the news of Dale's death. It hit me like a sledgehammer. I was a big NASCAR fan, and a HUGE Dale Earnhardt fan. I was devastated. I kept watching NASCAR though because of Dale Jr. When he retired I basically quit watching races because of all the rule changes. It became too watered down, and not entertaining enough anymore. RIP Dale Earnhardt.

I remember an interview where it was said that blood was seen coming out of Dale's ears and that's when they knew it was very serious if not fatal. If u remember that race,he was blocking for his team with Michael Waltrip up front and Dale Jr in 2nd. I often thought,if only he didn't try to block and just moved over,he'd still be here today. But that wasn't Dales style and he wanted his team to finish 1,2,3 is how i took it. He died doing the thing he loved the most but that didn't take the sting out of it in any way shape or form. I'm a big guy and older(in my 60s) but when ever that accident is replayed i tear up to this day and that was in 2001. Best that ever lived in my opinion,the black #3 should be retired. My dad was a WWII combat soldier. Like many vets returning home, he looked for something more than domestic bliss and found it in car racing. He and his brother pooled their meager funds and started racing in Sportsman Series races all over New England. I was with then from the age of 6. Hiding in the wrecker they used as a hauler whenever a pit official was near. Racing was something I shared with them. Earnhardt was his favorite driver decades later. Every chance I had , I would make the drive down to my mom and dad’s house to watch a Sunday race with him. After my mom passed, I made the trip every Sunday. One Christmas, I got him a Dale Earnhardt jacket which he wore everywhere! In 1990, I bought tickets for the first NASCAR race at New Hampshire International Speedway and I stood in line for Dale the sign his jacket. A year after Dale died, my dad passed. He was buried with that jacket on. I haven’t watched a NASCAR race since that day.

I was working on the #36 M&M's car at the time. The Simpson belts that everyone used had a metal piece to pre-tension the belts. The piece was always in front of the seat above the drivers shoulders. Earnhardt's belt's were installed how Dale wanted them to be installed, with the metal piece behind the seat. When he was thrown forward in the crash, the metal piece caught on his seat and tore exactly at the metal piece. Nascar didn't dare tell the fans that Earnhardt had done it to himself. However, they made sure every car had the belts installed properly the next race. Simpson's complaints were justified. Nascar did what Nascar does. Make a bad situation much worse.

I cried like millions of other Earnhardt fans, for his family, for his friends, for his fans and because I knew that NASCAR would never be the same. Love him or hate him you knew what he meant to the sport. That was the tragic day God called Dale home and took my favorite drive to root against... forever changing NASCAR for me. 🏁#3 forever "The Intimidator" forever the Legend, forever Missed. 🏁

There are several times in life when we label a day. When Buddy Holly, Richie Valans, and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash, it was the day the music died. When Dale hit the turn 4 wall, it was the day NASCAR died. I worked with several teams and remember the exact moment I heard the news. Everyone in the business agreed that NASCAR would go down hill from this. Many of Dale's fans stepped away from the sport. What this video doesn't tell you, is how Dale started the souvenir trucks, and he taught others how to make money from this. Dale knew how to market himself. Inside secret - Dale and Gordon were good friends.

Ken didn't need to say anything. That impact said it all. There is no need to go into grusome detail. It would have been graphically obvious that he was deceased. Remember him as he was in life. The image at that point would do no good.

Dale Earnhardt was the reason I watched Nascar. I did watch a little after his death hoping Jr. would follow his father's footsteps in championships but I soon realized he wouldn't. I did watch it once in a while but when Nascar lost it's southern identity, I never watched it again, I'm sure many of you know exactly what I'm talking about. God Bless Dale.

It’s always the wrecks that look pedestrian that are most fatal. The guy’s luck just ran out. He’d climbed out of a lot of wild collisions. When that wreck happened I didn’t think anything of it. That was a terrible event. That year had some things go down NONE of us will ever forget. Already an entire generation has come of age, born after 2001. Crazy.
@mariebelladonna437Ай бұрын
@@osumbuckeyenut I was watching the race at my Dad's, and thought the same as you. It didn't look that bad. Just another wreck. So I left right after Earnhardt crashed. Like, literally right after he hit the wall. So I didn't see Kenny's reaction, or that of the other drivers, until I watched replays later. At the time, I saw Earnhardt crash, left, and then got a call from my Dad about half an hour or so later, telling me Dale had died. I was gobsmacked, and just devastated. I just couldn't believe it. And I have never taken a crash for granted like that again. When Newman wrecked in 2020, I remembered Earnhardt. And I just sat, frozen in front of my TV, with my heart in my throat, and tears in my eyes, praying as hard as I've ever prayed in my life. I was SURE we'd all just watched Ryan Newman die, right in front of us. Thank God, he ended up being okay. But even to this day, almost 5 years later, watching a replay of that crash makes me feel sick to my stomach. It was one of the scariest things I've ever seen, in over 40 years of watching NASCAR. And it's because of what happened to Earnhardt, that I took Newman's crash as terrifyingly seriously as I did. I learned my lesson, that day in 2001. And to this day, no matter how minor a crash seems, I don't assume anything, and I hold my breath until we hear from the driver, or that window net comes down. And then I always breathe a huge sigh of relief.

I had the privilege of being on Dale's pitcrew at Monroe speedway roadcourse in Washington in the mid 1980's. He wanted the seat and steering wheel set up so he was closer to the wheel so as to steer more with his shoulders rather than just with his arms. It was to give him more stamina in a long race. I believe his body and face so close to the steering contributed to his death

When I was in NASCAR with Roush racing a guy with us inspected the cars inside for safety. He did that for Carl Edwards and he was good friends with the guy that did the safety work for Dale Earnhardt and he was told that on Dale Earnhardt Seat, that was the seatbelt that was routed the wrong way and the wrong way meant it was up against a sharp piece of metal. They tried to tell him the right way and he said he wants it this way or no other way, they left it alone and that’s what happened. He didn’t hit the wall real hard but just hard enough for that seatbelt to break and send him into the dash I’ve got pictures of the steering wheel on the dash I wouldn’t dare share it with anybody, but that’s the true facts.

My mother and stepfather’s neighbors had a son that worked in the DEI motor shop and was at the race. The son called his parents and told them Dale had died and they told mom. We had watched the race at her house so of course she told me. This was 20-30 minutes before it was announced officially. It was so sad, knowing he was gone but seeing people on air speculating about his injuries. I agree that NASCAR then began a slow descent to irrelevance, delayed only by Dale, Jr’s active years. The only salvation for the sport might be, and I emphasize might be, if they did away with the standardized cars etc. and went back to the wild, best engineered car wins days and everyone else innovates to try to catch up.
